SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As more people are being hospitalized with COVID-19 across Southern California, some health care systems worry that lack of hospital staffing could become a big issue.“We’ve got to take care of our health care workers, or we’re not going to have them to take care of the patients,” said Meghan Jaremczuk, a registered nurse and the Director of Progressive and Acute Care at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.Like many health care workers this year, Jaremczuk hasn’t had a break. She’s been taking care of COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic.“Other people have been working from home, we're not, we're here, we're in it,” she said. “It’s been hard because this has been going on for a long time and people are tired, but they're still showing up. You're seeing people that can't be with their loved ones, visitors are very, very restricted. They can Facetime with their families and things like that, but it’s not the same.”The County of San Diego reported an additional 15 deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday and a 62 percent increase in the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients in a two week period.The Federal Medical Station set up at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido has 202 beds for non-ICU patients ready to go when needed, according to Palomar Health CEO Diane Hansen.Hansen said the health care system has the ability to expand the dedicated 48 ICU beds to 110 ICU beds if needed, but said making sure enough health care workers are available is one of the bigger issues at this point.“We do have capacity. We're seeing on average about 50 patients per day less than what we normally see this time of year,” said Hansen. “While we have capacity, my biggest concern is our ability to staff beds should the pandemic surge become greater.”“Staffing is a concern because not every nurse can take care of every kind of patient,” said Jaremczuk.Jaremczuk is most worried about the rapid rate of community spread. She said if nurses become sick, hospital operations could be disrupted.While she understands many people are tired of constantly being told to mask up, wash their hands and avoid gatherings, she’s urging everyone to continue to follow the health guidelines to protect those who are giving their all to save lives.“The patients also make an impact on our lives, we make connections and it's meaningful,” she said. “If we get exposed, if we get sick, we can't come to work and take care of patients.” 2459

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Around the world in eight and a half years, one couple returns to San Diego after almost a decade of sailing. Neal Schneider and his wife Ruth left San Diego on their 48-foot sailboat in December 2010. Schneider tells 10News, “I felt like there was an invisible hand grabbing the front of my shirt saying come on you got to do this.” He initially thought it would take them four years to circumnavigate. 38 countries and 49,000 miles later, they ended up taking a little longer. Their path took them to Mexico, French Polynesia, Tonga, New Zealand, Fiji, Thailand, and Africa and beyond. In fact, they decided to spend one whole year living in Thailand. During their adventures there were times where they flew back to the United States. Two of their children got married and they attended the weddings. As the couple prepares for the final leg of their trip, Schneider says, “we are very excited on the verge of being emotional”. An eye-opening experience for the Schneiders, “what a fabulous world this is, but I’ll tell you, I think one of our favorite places in all the places is San Diego.” They are expected to arrive Tuesday evening and dock at San Diego Yacht Club. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Conservationists planted dozens of Short-leaved Liveforever in a secret location Friday in an effort to help the succulent survive, according to San Diego Zoo Global Plant Division and the Chaparral Conservancy.The reason for the secrecy was due to the same two reasons the plant is endangered: Illegal harvesting and vandalism. David Hogan, Director of Chaparral Conservancy, lent seeds from an area in Torrey Pines to San Diego Zoo Global, which cultivated the plants for two years.Hogan grew up in San Diego and says his earliest memories are toddling around in nature. He says he's been keeping a close eye on these tiny plants for years, and is now thankful for the handful of grants from various agencies to make reintroducing Liveforever possible.The plant gets its name from its life cycle, sprouting leaves in the summer, and dying down to its root in the winter.Just off the trail, two yellow measuring tapes sat straight as arrows, creating a grid for the Zoo Global team to note where they planted root shafts. "[They're] pretty tiny; the only way we're going to find them is from these measurements," Joyce Maschinski, Vice President of Science and Conservation with Zoo Global said.She wasn't kidding. Looking down, the tiny plant blends right into the rocks surrounding it. Only a trained eye and careful steps keep these conservationists from stepping on the precious wildlife.Hogan said the Liveforever would grow about three times its size in a good year. In the summer, they can bloom beautiful flowers. That's part of the draw for illegal harvesters who sell the plants in Asia.Conservationists used tweezers to hold the roots in just the right place as they filled the marker-sized hole and watered the plants."Everybody knows that it's kinda hard to kill a succulent so they should be able to do well as long as we get them in there, in the right place to grow, and give them some water," Research Assistant with Zoo Global, Joe Davitt, said.Altogether they planted 46 root shafts across two locations."They're nowhere near as appealing to a lot of people as a, say, a baby polar bear or a giraffe, but they're just as equally important. They're part of the incredible biodiversity of life on earth," Hogan said.The Liveforever only grows in five places on Earth, between La Jolla, Carmel Valley and Del Mar, Hogan said."Sometimes it's appealing to go out onto the cliffs to get a better shot for the camera or the ocean or the sunset, but that's unfortunately where a lot of these really rare and endangered animals and plants live," Hogan said, encouraging people to stay on the trails."A lot of us who work with conservation connect with nature as home; this is where we go for comfort, this is where we feel the most connected with the rest of the world," he said. 2817

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border water officials said Tuesday nearly 14.5 million gallons of sewage flowed into the U.S. from Tijuana after a body became trapped in a sewage system.The International Boundary Water Commission (USIBWC) said transboundary flows between about 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, and 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, brought 14,497,873 gallons of treated and untreated wastewater from Tijuana into the Tijuana River Valley.Mexico's International Boundary Water Commission (CILA) informed their U.S. counterparts Sunday that a cleanup crew at a pump station discovered a body trapped inside one of the sewage intake screens, causing a backup and sewage to overflow.RELATED: San Diego leaders present plan to solve Mexican sewage problem"Police got involved and cordoned off the area preventing any activity in the crime area while the investigation continued. A body was trapped inside the intake screens. This caused trash to build up and plug the structure and overflow into the U.S.," the USIBWC's Dawi Dakhil said in an email.It wasn't immediately clear how the person became trapped in the system.The scene was cleared Monday and Mexico water officials rebuilt a temporary berm, or raised bank, to stop the overflow.The CILA pump station was operational as sewage flowed across the border, according to USIBWC.Last month, San Diego officials introduced a 4-million plan to the White House to address the flow of sewage from Mexico into the U.S. The centerpiece was a treatment facility that could process 163 million gallons of runoff per day, with the aim of reducing border sewage flow days from 138 to 12.Officials were reportedly looking into various sources to fund the project, which would likely require help from Congressional leaders.Days after the plan was presented, a broken water line in Tijuana sent a mix of potable water and untreated sewage across the border into the U.S. 1913

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As if San Diego's craft beer scene doesn't already have enough options, the legalization of marijuana has created new opportunities for companies interested in the world of the cannabis-infused.Enter High Style, a San Diego-based brewery launching a THC-infused, non-alcoholic beer called "Pale Haze." The drink incorporates the traditional flavors of beer using Amarillo and Cascade hops, as well as 10mg of THC.The beer has a "light, crisp, and extremely effervescent" flavor, according to the brewery, with notes of tropical fruit and citrus.RELATED: Blue Moon founder now brewing THC-infused craft beerHigh Style's Vice President of Marketing Jared Threw said the brewery's brewmaster worked over 12 months on the process to create the alcohol-free beer — though there are small traces of alcohol, as with most non-alcoholic beers.
