Former World Wrestling Entertainment star Brian Christopher Lawler died Sunday, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.Lawler, 46, is the son of Jerry "The King" Lawler, a WWE Hall of Fame wrestler. He was best known in WWE as the Too Cool tag team's Grandmaster Sexay, according to the organization.An investigation is underway after Lawler, who was an inmate at the Hardeman County jail, was found in his cell on Saturday, said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.Celebrity deaths of 2018: Remembering those we've lost this year"Corrections officers administered CPR until paramedics arrived," according to a statement from the agency. Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced that archeological investigations found a 7,000-year-old Native American ancestral burial site in the Gulf of Mexico near Venice, Florida.“The Florida Department of State takes our responsibility for the preservation, respectful treatment and security of this rare and unique site very seriously,” said Secretary Detzner. “Our dedicated team of underwater archaeologists has done an incredible job of documenting and researching the Manasota Key Offshore archaeological site, and I am extremely proud of the work. Our hope is that this discovery leads to more knowledge and a greater understanding of Florida’s early peoples. We are thankful for the cooperation of our partners, including Gulf Coast Community Foundation and their CEO, Mark Pritchett, who has provided invaluable support and integration with the local community.”The Manasota Key Offshore (MKO) site is reportedly unprecedented and is located on the continental shelf in offshore waters, preserved in what appears to have been a peat-bottomed freshwater pond thousands of years ago.The state says that out of respect for the individuals buried there and their living descendants, divers are restricted from disturbing the site.Officials say the MKO archaeological site demonstrates that submerged offshore archaeological sites have survived natural occurrences, such as erosion and hurricanes.“Seeing a 7,000-year-old site that is so well preserved in the Gulf of Mexico is awe inspiring," said Dr. Ryan Duggins, Underwater Archaeology Supervisor for BAR. "We are truly humbled by this experience. It is important to remember that this is a burial site and must be treated with the utmost respect. Federal student loan borrowers haven’t had to make payments since March. But without continued government intervention, those unable to pay can expect long waits for help come October when bills are scheduled to restart.Automatic, interest-free forbearance provided by the first coronavirus relief package was not extended by the Health, Economic Assistance, Liability Protection and Schools Act proposed by Senate Republicans. There’s no additional relief for student loan borrowers in the proposal.While that legislation could still change, your best safeguard if your job or finances are shaky is to act now.“It’s a disaster waiting to happen,” says Seth Frotman, executive director of the Student Borrower Protection Center, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.Restarting payments for tens of millions of student loan borrowers will likely lead to delinquencies and defaults, says Frotman. And there’s precedent for his assertion: Data from the Education Department in 2019 shows defaults increased when forbearances expired after natural disasters.On top of that, the number of borrowers affected by the pandemic dwarfs any previous challenge for student loan servicers.The servicing system was “never meant to handle high volatility moments; it was built to handle servicing on a normal cycle,” says Scott Buchanan, executive director of Student Loan Servicer Alliance, a nonprofit trade association representing student loan servicers. Buchanan urges borrowers to contact their servicers today for guidance.You don’t have to wait for congressional approval to take control. If you don’t think you can handle your monthly payments, an income-driven repayment plan is your best option to avoid default. Here’s why you should enroll now and what your other choices are.Opt for income-driven repaymentFederal loan borrowers can — and should — apply now for income-driven repayment. Each of the four plans available will cap payments at a percentage of your income and extend repayment to 20 or 25 years, with any remaining balance forgiven at the end.The most broadly available plan, Revised Pay As You Earn, or REPAYE, caps payments at 10% of discretionary income. If you have no income, or your income is at or below the poverty line, your payments would be zero.It’s vital to enroll as soon as possible. Many student loan borrowers who are out of work may apply for income-driven repayment all at once, which is likely to overwhelm the servicers. You’re more likely to get your application approved sooner if you apply now.“This is the moment for you to reach out and call us so we can talk specifically about your situation,” says Buchanan.He adds that servicers are planning outreach to borrowers in the coming weeks. In the meantime, they’re internally discussing increased staffing to meet an influx of demand from student loan borrowers.Recertify your existing income-driven repayment planFederal loan borrowers already enrolled in income-driven repayment must recertify their income each year or revert to a standard repayment plan.If you’ve had a change in income, now is a good time to update the amount with your servicer. Recertification will make sure your payments are updated and affordable.The fastest way to recertify your plan is at studentaid.gov, but a paper form is also available.Request another payment pause — this time with interestYour alternate option is to pause payments through forbearance or an unemployment deferment. Neither is quite like the payment pause you currently have — you have to request it, and interest will likely accrue during the entire pause and increase the total you owe. To prevent this, you can ask to make interest-only payments during these periods.An unemployment deferment allows you to postpone repayment for up to 36 months. You must be receiving unemployment benefits or working part time while seeking full-time work. Only apply for an unemployment deferment if you know you’ll be out of work for a short period of time and if you can prove you have looked for a job at least six times within the last six months. Otherwise, an income-driven repayment plan is the way to go. Interest won’t accrue on subsidized loans during an unemployment deferment.A forbearance is a last-ditch effort to avoid student loan default, which could lead to your wages being garnished or your tax refund being seized. Interest will accrue on all your loans and be added to your balance at the end. Only use forbearance if you can’t pay your loans, you plan to restart repayment soon and you won’t qualify for an unemployment deferment. You can request a forbearance with your servicer.Ask your private lender about hardship optionsPrivate student loan borrowers were left out of the original Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act as well as the HEALS Act.But private lenders usually offer student loan forbearance or can temporarily lower your payments, though these options are far less generous than federal ones. Private lenders are also making relief options available temporarily to borrowers facing financial challenges. FREDERICK, Colo. — When Chris Watts murdered his wife, his two daughters and unborn child in August 2018, it captured headlines around the world.Two years later, the Watts home still sits vacant.Driving by, it looks like the all-American home — two stories, five bedrooms and more than 4,000 square feet in the cookie-cutter suburbs of northern Colorado. But when buyers realize what happened inside, everything changes."There's no mystery about what happened there. The neighborhood knows what happened there. Potential buyers know what happened there," Denver-based bankruptcy attorney Clark Dray said.Chris Watts strangled his wife, Shanann, inside their home after an early-morning fight. Watts told her he was having an affair with a co-worker and wanted out of the marriage. That same morning, Watts smothered his two daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. He then tried to cover up the murders by placing his wife's body in a shallow grave and his daughters in crude oil tanks on the property where Chris worked.As Watts lied to investigators, he also went before news cameras begging for his family to return. He later confessed to police after failing a polygraph test.Watts is now serving multiple life sentences in prison.Interest in the murder homeThe fate of 2825 Saratoga Trail, where the family lived, currently sits in legal limbo."It's a beautiful home. I would hate to see them just take it down," said a next-door neighbor who asked not to be identified.Neighbors are scarred by what happened. In fact, all the neighbors interviewed said they did not want to be identified. They all said they didn't want to bring any more attention to themselves or the neighborhood."For the neighborhood, it's just kind of difficult," the next-door neighbor said.She said a recent Netflix documentary about the murders — "American Murder: The Family Next Door" — has spurred new interest in the home, and not the kind anyone in the neighborhood wants."Literally hundreds of cars have come by. They're curious; they've been coming from out of state," the next-door neighbor said.The area has seen so much activity since the documentary aired that neighbors put up "no trespassing" signs out front of the Watts house and are urging people not to leave any more memorials on the front porch."I totally understand everyone's interest in the home. I just would ask that people just be respectful because you are coming into the neighborhood of, you know, other people that live here," the next-door neighbor said.She said cars speed in out of the neighborhood to see the home often, and she worries about the safety of children playing."People come late at night," she said.Home is deterioratingCurrently, the grass outside the Watts house is dead, and vacancy notes are plastered to the door.Around back, memories of the family home are frozen in time. The girls' swing set blows in the wind, and a stuffed animal lies in the grass."There's a fascination with it," said the next-door neighbor."It would be a great home for a traditional family," Dray said.But Dray, the Denver-based bankruptcy attorney, said it's very difficult for a buyer to overcome the stigma associated with the home."At this point in time, there's no financial incentive to anyone involved to pursue this home," he said.Shortly after the murders, the lender that owns the mortgage foreclosed on it and put the house up for auction. But nobody wanted it, so Weld County took it out of foreclosure."It's a strategic decision that the bank has made — 'this doesn't have to be our problem. We're OK not getting paid on this property for the foreseeable future,'" Dray said.Real estate appraiser says price is 'way too high'The couple bought the home brand new for 9,954 in 2013, and according to Zillow, it's now valued at close to 0,000. Real estate appraiser Orell Anderson said the price is way off-base."It's way too high — as if this never occurred," he said. "I think that the property has been mismanaged."Anderson said for the home to sell, it needs to be discounted heavily. He believes they should cut the price by at least 40%."You see a pattern that tells you that when there are children involved in the murder, the discounts go higher," Anderson said.On top of that, Anderson said the seller needs to make the house look different. He suggests repainting it, changing the addresses or adding new plants — anything to wipe away the memories that are kept alive through photographs and videos of the home in the media."That's been exacerbated because it's been vacant for so long," he said.Several creditors have also placed liens on the home; the largest is from Shanann's parents. They placed a million dollar lien on the house after they won a wrongful death suit against Watts."That would make it very difficult to sell the home at a reasonable price," Dray said.He said for a sale to make sense, a potential buyer would have to make a deal with the lien holders and have enough money to cover the original mortgage.Neighbors have mixed opinions on what should happenMichelle Pate lives near the Watts home and says she would like to see it torn down."Who would want to start their life in that house?" she said. "I don't understand why they haven't just knocked it down and maybe made a little park out of it or something."Meanwhile, next-door neighbors said they are hoping for new energy and a new beginning for the home with a story that shocked the world."Once enough time has gone by, I think probably another family will move in," the neighbor said.This story was originally published by Jennifer Kovaleski on KMGH in Denver. 5632
