The District of Columbia Attorney General's Office has subpoenaed the Trump inaugural committee for documents related to its finances. The subpoena, dated February 26 and obtained by CNN, says the attorney general, Karl Racine, is investigating "whether the Committee's expenditures of its nonprofit funds were wasteful, mismanaged, and/or improperly provided private benefit, causing the Committee to exceed or abuse its authority or act contrary to its nonprofit purpose."The new probe indicates widening interest among law enforcement officials into Trump's inaugural, which is also being investigated by prosecutors in New York and New Jersey. The documents, due by March 29, cover a wide swath of committee activity. The subpoena asks for inaugural committee financial and governance documents, vendor contracts and communications, as well as money the committee paid to the Trump Organization and the Trump International Hotel in downtown Washington. The hotel was a hot place to stay for revelers attending Trump's inauguration in January 2017, and it remains a central hangout for tourists and Trump associates in the city. The office declined to comment, when reached by CNN. 1194
The holiday season is wrapping up, those presents open and bellies are full. But beware, holiday Grinches are still out there ready to steal.Year after year, the number of post-holiday scams popping up are on the the rise, taking your new present away before they can even be used. Those scams target presents like gift cards or new pieces of technology, like a smart TV or new computer. The biggest post-holiday scams out there hit gift cards to specific stores like Starbucks or Best Buy and even generic Visa or MasterCard debit gift cards. They usually target when people go to check their balance online, according to the Better Business Bureau. They often lead you to a fake website, either from an internet search or a fake email that popped into your inbox. The fake website, which often looks like the real website, asks for the gift card number and the pin/security code. Once you click submit on the fake site, the scammers have all the information and can start using it and your gift money is gone. But this year's scams don't just affect gift cards. As technology gets smarter, like our computers and smart TVs, scammers are turning into hackers to get to your personal information. Before you even start using that new smart TV, computer or other piece of technology, make sure you update it. The prompts will usually appear on the screen or you can find them inside the "settings" or "about" windows on the device. Also, make sure you register the device to your email address. That won't just help with the warranty, it will also make sure you get email updates if there are security breaches. Those software updates are vital to keeping your personal information secure. 1733

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is reviewing about 0,000 it received from foundations controlled by accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, MIT's president said. The school also will donate that amount to a charity benefiting Epstein's victims or other sexual abuse victims, President L. Rafael Reif said in an email. The review will focus on the facts around the donations, made over 20 years, and how the school handles contributions and can improve that process, Reif said.Epstein was awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking involving underage girls when he killed himself by hanging in a New York jail cell this month."I offer a profound and humble apology" to the victims on behalf of the administration, Reif said. "With hindsight, we recognize with shame and distress that we allowed MIT to contribute to the elevation of his reputation, which in turn served to distract from his horrifying acts. No apology can undo that."The donations went to the MIT Media Lab or Seth Lloyd, a professor of mechanical engineering, according to Reif's email. 1078
The once mighty brands of Sears and Kmart are continuing to slowly disappear as Sears announced on Thursday the closure of 96 additional stores. The 96 locations, which are a mixture of Kmart and Sears branded stores, are set to close by February. The closing locations will have going out of business sales starting on Dec. 2. The footprint of Sears and Kmart will further shrink by one third with this round of closures, leaving fewer than 200 total locations nationally between the two brands. This announcement comes less than a year after more than 200 Sears and Kmart locations closed. While other retailers in recent years, such as Toys 'R' Us and RadioShack have faded away, Sears' demise would mark the end of an industry titan. The company was at one time the nation's largest retailer, selling items as small as earrings, to as big as houses. The announcement does not impact the nearly 400 locations that operate as Sears Hometown or Sears Outlet locations, which feature appliances and electronics.
