MOSCOW, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Wu Bangguo, China's top legislator, met with Russian Duma Chairman Boris Gryzlov on Thursday. Both leaders stressed the importance of parliamentary cooperation and the unique role it serves bilateral relations.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress(NPC), hailed the bilateral parliamentary cooperation at various levels in recent years. In particular, such cooperation should first serve the strategic mutual trust and the interests of the common concerns of China and Russia.     The NPC and the Russian Parliament should provide firm support to each other on major issues involving state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security, he said.     The two should also reinforce strategic cooperation in international and regional parliamentary organizations, safeguard common benefits, and create a conducive environment for the development of the two countries, Wu said. He called on the parliamentary bodies to approve bilateral cooperation deals on oil and natural gas on time.     He also urged the implementation of already-signed cooperation agreements, and for support to help Chinese and Russian enterprises find new opportunities for cooperation within each other's economic stimulus plans.     The NPC and the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian Parliament, should also be actively engaged in activities commemorating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and to broadly share the idea of friendship between the two nations, Wu said.     Gryzlov said parliamentary cooperation between Russia and China has served a significant and unique role in the fast development of bilateral ties.     Especially since the two parliaments established a regular exchange mechanism, more and more Duma legislators have been involved in promoting friendship between the two countries, he said.     The State Duma hopes to further strengthen its ties with the NPC, and to promote bilateral cooperation in areas such as politics, economy, culture, environment, anti-terrorism and anti-drug smuggling, Gryzlov said.     Wu is in Moscow for an official visit to Russia. Since arriving in Moscow on Wednesday, the legislator has met with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and Sergei Mironov, chairman of the upper chamber of the Russian Parliament, known as the Federation Council.

RAMALLAH, June 23, (Xinhua) -- With more than 30 years of involvement in the work related to the Middle East issue, China's new special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike said on Tuesday that he'll employ his personal experience on the region to help fulfill his mission.     Wu arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Tuesday, starting the second leg of his first regional tour as China's new special envoy.     Upon his arrival, Wu told Xinhua that Chinese and Palestinian peoples have a traditional friendship, China has been long supporting the righteous Palestinian cause, with the positive sign emerged recently on the peace issue, China, along with the international community, is concerning on how to revive the peace process and push forward the process toward a final solution.     With this concern, Wu said the aim of his trip is to know the attitude and response of all sides involved in the peace process on the newly emerged situation, lay out China's stance on the issue, and exert efforts to boost the process with all sides in coordination.     Touching upon the issue of the internal Palestinian dispute between factions, mainly the rival Fatah and Hamas, Wu said Palestinian unity is crucial to solve the Middle East issue.     "Hamas is a major Palestinian faction, which enjoys strong public support," said the envoy, adding that, "it'll be important if Hamas can take an positive attitude toward the peace process and involved in it."     Wu said China is willing to see the success of the internal Palestinian dialogue, and is ready to make efforts on helping Palestinians to achieve national unity.     Wu, former Chinese ambassador to Egypt, was appointed as the special envoy in March this year to replace Sun Bigan.     He has been director of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and also the first Chinese plenipotentiary to the Arab League.     Citing his three-decade long diplomatic experiences in the region, Wu said that he witnessed both the disasters and losses caused by conflicts and the development, stability and opportunities brought by peace tracks between countries in the region.     "The contrast between the two tracks makes me convinced that military confront could not bring about the resolution of the Middle East issue, and the only way out is through peace negotiations," said the envoy.     Bearing the belief, the envoy said he will discuss both his personal experience and China's stance on the Middle East issue with all sides during his mediation, and actively involve in the peace process to fulfill his mission.

BEICHUAN, Sichuan, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The quake-devastated Beichuan county seat in southwest China's Sichuan Province reopened Sunday to residents to mourn the dead ahead of the first anniversary of the disaster.     Some 21,000 people, or two-thirds of the county seat's population, were dead or missing in the 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12 last year, making the county the worst hit in the quake.     The county will be open for four days till Wednesday.     Mourners brought flowers, incense and candles and set off firecrackers in the ruins of former bus stations, county government buildings and homes. The police distributed bottled water to the crowd for free. Construction of the new school will begin on May 12.     "I wish my sister can study hard to enter the senior high school. The new town is expected to have 58,000 residents in 2010 and 110,000 in 2020.

  

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-nine large and medium-sized Chinese steel producers reported 5.18 billion yuan (762.46 million U.S. dollars) in aggregate losses in the first four months, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said here Friday.     The 29 producers were among 72 surveyed by CISA, the association's vice chairman, Luo Bingsheng, said.     The 72 companies reported 575.59 billion yuan in revenue, down 18.9 percent year on year, Luo said. They paid 15.42 billion yuan in taxes, down 85.07 percent year on year, Luo said.     Losses were mainly caused by slumping domestic steel prices, Luo said.     Many producers have cut costs, and the production cost of steel dropped 13.75 percent in the first quarter, Luo said.

  

BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Albania issued a joint statement here Tuesday in which they said they would boost their traditional friendship and bilateral cooperation in all fields.     The statement was issued after official talks between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha in the Great Hall of the People during the afternoon.     The two countries vowed to increase mutual investment, encourage more business contacts and promote a balanced development of trade ties, the statement said.     China would support its competitive companies to invest in Albania and participate in the country's infrastructure construction, energy and mine exploitation, it said. Albania said it appreciated China's aid for its economic development. It acknowledged there is only one China in the world and the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legal government representing the whole China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. China highly appreciated the stance of the country, the statement said.     In face of the global financial crisis, the two countries called on the international community to enhance financial supervision cooperation, fight trade protectionism and reduce the damage of the crisis to developing countries.     China respected the Albanian people's choice of a development path in line with their domestic situation and understood their efforts to join the European integration process, the statement said.     The two countries agreed to abide by the principles of the UN Charter, and support the UN's leading role in safeguarding international security, promoting common development and peacefully solving international disputes.     Both sides proposed to strengthen the function and authority of the UN and UN Security Council and agreed to increase cooperation in the United Nations and other international organizations, the statement said.     The international community should work together to combat terrorism, and the two nations agreed to respect each other's security concerns.     Albania spoke highly of China's achievements since the founding of the PRC 60 years ago and appreciated China's contributions to world peace and development.     Both sides applauded their remarkable cooperation in various areas, and agreed to hold activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of bilateral ties, the statement said.
