POINT LOMA, Calif., (KGTV)— Rainy conditions did not deter thousands of people from participating in the Second Annual Walk Against Hate-San Diego. “I walk for peace and for equal rights for people,” a pre-teen participant said. Three thousand five hundred people joined the Anti-Defamation League’s biggest event of the year, walking to show that San Diego is no place for hate. “Especially in the aftermath of something that is so tragic happening to our community,” ADL-San Diego’s Director of Development, Lindsey Zipkin said. Still fresh in the minds of participants is the Poway Synagogue Shooting on April 27, 2019. Zipkin said there was a huge jump in registration, right after the tragedy.“It gives people a really great way to come together to support one another and to celebrate diversity and respect. And really show that this is really what San Diego is about. No place for hate and not that terrible things that just happened to us,” Zipkin said. 10News also spoke to 15-year-old Nadiv Meltzer, who said the incident opened up a serious dialogue at home. His father, Rabbi Scott Meltzer, talked to him about overcoming bias and hate. “I think it’s not ideal that we needed such as an exhibition of hate and violence to get people together, but I think it’s important that people do get together,” Meltzer said. Together they walked, in the name of love and inclusivity.“Understanding that things like that can happen, but it’s our job not to let that stop us from expressing ourselves religiously or being who we actually are," Meltzer said. "I think that’s really important,” 1600

PHOENIX - Kyrsten Sinema has defeated Martha McSally in the highly contested race for an Arizona Senate seat, per the Associated Press. This comes after several days of ballot counting and controversy over rural county results.Sinema (D) defeated McSally (R) for the seat previously held by Senator Jeff Flake, who chose not to run again in this election. On Friday, Republican and Democrat leaders agreed to give rural counties a second chance to fix ballot issues with voters. GOP leaders hoped the move would help Republicans gain votes for McSally in the race, but Sinema's lead was eventually too wide to recover from.  With this win, Sinema will be named the first female U.S. Senator from the state of Arizona.Democrats are projected to have at least 47 Senate seats at the start of the new Congress in 2019. Republicans have clinched 51 seats, with Republican Rick Scott holding a narrow lead in Florida's US Senate race. Republicans are also likely to win next month's runoff for a seat in Mississippi.  1064

Police said in a news conference Tuesday afternoon that investigators found "distractionary-type" devices in the backpack of a boy who shot himself inside Jackson Memorial Middle School near Canton, Ohio. Police said the devices were not explosives and they didn't find any devices that "would have done harm to others." Jackson Township middle school and high school students were dismissed for the day after the boy shot himself around 7:50 a.m. Authorities say the boy suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the boy's bathroom. It's unclear at this time whether the shooting was accidental or intentional. RELATED: Father of Jackson Township student says he put body armor in son's book bag over the weekendThe seventh grader was taken to a local hospital where his condition is unknown. The following message was posted on Jackson Local Schools website:All four elementary schools in the district will remain closed Tuesday. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Eight border wall prototypes erected along the U.S.-Mexico border crossing in South San Diego County will soon be dismantled, a Border Patrol source confirmed to 10News Friday. The area is being cleared to make way for the secondary border fence, the official said. The Department of Homeland Security hired companies to build the prototypes, which were finished in October 2017. The designs were constructed to the Border Patrol’s requirements and stood 30 feet high, most made of thick concrete. “We’ll look at things like aesthetics, how penetrable they area, how resistant they are to tampering, and then scaling or anti-climb features,” CBP Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said in 2017. RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Candidate describes border wall prototypeOver two months, Customs and Border Protection officials tested the walls using power tools, hand tools, and other methods. The CBP evaluated the prototypes to determine if anyone could get through by climbing or digging. The vendors hired to complete the work included Caddell Construction of Alabama, KWR Construction of Arizona, ELTA North America Inc. of Maryland, W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Company of Mississippi, Fisher Sand & Gravel Co. of Arizona, and Texas Sterling Construction Co. of Texas. Much of the input for the designs came from Border Patrol agents. RELATED: Photos: A look at the border wall prototypes"There was never an intent to pick one and copy that along the entire U.S. border. The entire concept literally was how can we do this better," San Diego Sector Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott told 10News in 2018. "But we're not picking one of these walls over the other walls, and we never planned on doing that. So, depending on the terrain or the environment, it could be any one of these? Correct." President Trump toured the site in March 2018, alongside Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. “It will save thousands and thousands of lives, save taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars by reducing crime, drug flow, welfare fraud, and burdens on schools and hospitals. The wall will save hundreds of billions of dollars — many, many times what it’s going to cost,” said Trump after his review of the prototypes. 2252
