SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mesa College announced Friday the opening of its on-campus support center for current and former foster youth.The Fostering Academic Success and Transitions Center opened Thursday, coinciding with Mesa College's first week of classes in the fall 2019 semester. The FAST Center offers services such as tutoring, computer access and a food pantry and will serve as a gathering space for youth who have gone through the foster care system."The number one goal we had in creating this program was to make it extremely difficult to NOT be successful," FAST Scholars Program Coordinator Sade Burrell said. "The center is a place for students to get the resources they need, whether that includes counseling, tutoring, food, child care, emergency housing and any other need unique to their situation."Mesa College is the first community college in San Diego County to open an on-campus support center for students in the foster system. Currently, only about one-in-10 foster youth graduate from college and one-third of former foster youth are homeless by age 25. College officials hope the FAST Center will help quell those numbers for students in San Diego."What this center does is say, we see our foster youth. We see their experiences. We see the unique contributions that they bring to the campus; that we understand the many challenges or systemic barriers that are often placed in their way," said Ashanti Hands, the college's vice president of student services. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County officials Saturday said the availability of respirators and the capacity of Intensive Care Unit beds in the county's fight against the coronavirus has actually grown.Dr. Nicholas Yphantides, the county's chief medical officer, said that when he looked at some data Saturday morning he saw "something pretty remarkable.""The availability of ICU beds and the number of respirators that are available has actually grown," Yphantides said.The doctor said there were many technological innovations going on at local hospitals, such as tele-consultations and call-in nurses.He also wanted to remind the public that ventilators do not run themselves."We are very mindful of our most precious commodity, and that is our health care workers," Yphantides said. At a recent town hall forum, he reminded people that doctors and nurses are human, too,"We are really in the eye of the storm right now," the chief medical officer said. "The hope is that this Category 5 storm can be lessened and become more manageable."Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said he wanted to encourage people to rely on trusted sources of information about the health crisis.The health department will hold another coronavirus briefing on Sunday which will include San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Fletcher.The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in San Diego County saw its highest one-day jump yet when the number rose to 131 on Friday, an increase of 26 cases over the previous day."The message is very clear," County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said. "All Californians are being asked to stay at home if you do not need to go out for essential reasons."The increase in cases included 27 people hospitalized, with seven of the cases involving people aged 80 or older. There have been no deaths due to the illness in the county, according to the county health department's latest information.Of the 131 positive cases, 110 are residents of the county -- 18 of them hospitalized; 11 are under federal quarantine, with six of those patients hospitalized; and 10 are non-residents, three of whom are hospitalized. The vast majority -- 99 cases -- of those who have tested positive have been under the age of 60. One individual's age is unknown.Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statewide "stay-at-home" order Thursday night, advising residents not to leave their homes except for essential needs.Essential services will remain open, including: gas stations, pharmacies, banks, laundromats, and places to obtain food, including grocery stores, farmers markets, food banks, convenience stores, take-out and delivery restaurants.Any other public event or gathering is considered non-essential and is banned under the order until further notice.Health officials have asked local hospitals and laboratories to comply with county orders to report all testing results, positive or negative. A lack of reagent fluids is limiting the number of tests many facilities can complete a day, throwing off regional estimates of testing capabilities.Under the stay-at-home mandate, all gyms and fitness centers are closed and gatherings of 10 or more are barred. The mandate also restricts childcare to "stable" groups of 10 children with one childcare provider.The "stable" vocabulary refers to the same group of 10 children each day and the same provider each day. If a daycare or related business has more than 10 children, each group needs to be in separate rooms and cannot intermingle. Social distancing is encouraged even among the subgroups.The health orders banning gatherings do not apply to public transit, airports or any other mass transportation. The Metropolitan Transit System said it would continue running buses and trolleys at least until March 31 with ramped-up sanitization procedures on vehicles and at stations.All five tribal casinos in the county will remain closed through the end of the month.On Thursday, San Diego County's family resource centers, as well as the housing and community development services office, three of the five locations of the county clerk's office and all treasurer-tax collector offices temporarily suspended in-person services. The closures are intended to help county residents practice social-distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19.Meanwhile, the Ramada hotel in Kearny Mesa announced it will be used as a quarantine site for people potentially exposed to coronavirus.The Ramada by Wyndham San Diego North Hotel & Conference Center located near Kearny Mesa Road, north of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near state Route 163, will be used by the federal government to house patients under quarantine at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is reporting no fatalities and 26 drunk driving arrests in San Diego County for the Labor Day weekend period of 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.Last year for the same period, there were 40 DUI arrests and no fatalities in the county, according to the CHP.Across California, the CHP reported 551 DUI arrests and 18 fatalities for the same period. Last year, they reported 717 DUI arrests and 11 fatalities.The DUI arrests are only those made by CHP officers, while fatality statistics are for all law enforcement agencies.Statewide, 13 vehicle occupants were killed in CHP jurisdiction, six without safety belts. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police searched Thursday for a hit-and-run driver who ran a red light at a Mission Valley intersection and slammed into another car, seriously injuring it's 60-year-old driver.The crash was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Friars and Frazee roads, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.A 60-year-old woman was driving a 2007 Lexus sedan southbound on Frazee Road when a man driving a blue Ford pickup truck westbound on Friars Road ran a red light at Frazee and crashed into the driver's side of the Lexus, Heims said.The pickup driver kept driving, then pulled over a short distance away before he got out and ran away, the officer said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Reversing a vote from last week, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Monday approved four satellite voting offices ahead of the March primary election, over the fierce objections of one member. The vote was 3-1. Supervisors Greg Cox, Nathan Fletcher and Dianne Jacob were in favor, while Supervisor Jim Desmond was opposed. Supervisor Kristin Gaspar left the chamber before the board voted, after saying she was ``being asked to revisit a vote that we have already made, to overturn the will of this board.'' She also said that this morning's special meeting was planned by three members of the board, and that neither she nor Desmond were asked to attend. Jacob, who chairs the board and requested the special meeting, did not offer a formal response to Gaspar's allegation. The satellite voting office proposal stemmed in part from state legislation, recently signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, that allows Californians to register to vote on election day at local polling places and voting centers. The cost of the four satellite offices was estimated at nearly million: 0,000 for salaries and benefits, and 0,000 for services and supplies.
