DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - For the past five days, five shark sightings have been reported off North San Diego County beaches, Del Mar lifeguards tell 10News. A juvenile shark, about 5 feet long, was spotted Friday afternoon. It did not show signs of aggressive behavior, lifeguards said. The water was not cleared of swimmers and surfers. Del Mar’s shark sightings started Monday and have continued every day this week. Sighting locations include 15th and 29th streets, City of Del Mar officials reported. Drew Pierce, who went to Del Mar to avoid triple-digit heat in Temecula, was in the water Wednesday when he saw several 3-4 foot long sharks. Enter at Your Own Risk.” Heidi Dewar, Research Biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, said sharks under 6 feet long are juveniles. They tend to eat smaller fish and pose no threat to people, Dewar said. Dewar recommends avoiding beaches at dusk and dawn, avoiding river mouths, and monitoring shark warning signs. Farther up the coast, two local surfers spotted multiple sharks near El Portal Beach in San Clemente Friday afternoon, City News Service reported. DENVER – Colorado has joined a lawsuit involving 18 states, several cities and counties and the U.S. Conference of Mayors aiming to block the Trump administration from putting a citizenship question on the 2020 U.S. Census.But the state is doing so without the representation of its attorney general’s office and will have the governor’s chief legal counsel, Jacqueline Cooper Melmed, represent the state in the proceedings.Gov. John Hickenlooper’s office signed on to the first amended complaint in the lawsuit on Monday. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and a host of other states originally filed the lawsuit last month in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.Hickenlooper, a Democrat, broke with Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman, a Republican, in filing the suit.Coffman in early April announced that she and the attorneys general for Oklahoma and Louisiana supported the new citizenship question, saying that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross was “within his authority to find that the need for accurate citizenship information outweighed the fears of a lower response rate.”But in joining the suit, the governor’s office argued otherwise.“We have a responsibility to Colorado to see that every person is counted,” Hickenlooper said in a statement. “Our action seeks to ensure the census is being used for its intended purpose under the Constitution. The median house price in urban areas increased by 6.7%. Suburban areas jumped 9.2%.Redfin’s data also indicates more home buyers are looking to move to rural or suburban areas, shying from urban locales. Before the pandemic, 37% of home buyers were searching for homes in urban areas; now it’s 19%. Forty-three percent of home buyers were searching in suburban areas before the pandemic; now, it’s 50%. Nine percent of home buyers were home searching in rural areas before the pandemic; now it’s 19%.During the coronavirus, living close to restaurants, bars, social events and offices is not nearly as much of a priority for many home buyers."We've been speculating about increasing interest in the suburbs and rural areas since the start of the pandemic," said Redfin economist Taylor Marr. "Now we're seeing concrete evidence that rural and suburban neighborhoods are more attractive to homebuyers than the city, partly because working from home means commute times are no longer a major factor for some people. And due to historically low mortgage rates, interest is turning into action. "Post-pandemic, buyers may realize that while their new neighborhoods make for a nice weekend getaway, the long commute may become unsustainable should things go back to normal. And they'll miss city amenities like high-quality restaurants, shopping centers and walkability."The median price for homes in urban areas are more affordable than suburban and rural regions, but the homes being purchased in non-urban areas are generally larger.The median home price for an urban house in the four weeks ending August 2 was 5,873, according to Redfin. Meanwhile, the median cost for a rural home was 6,750, and the median cost for a suburban home was 2,900.But per square footage, urban homes still were more expensive, costing 6.17 per square foot, compared to 8.76 in the suburbs and 2.58 in the country. 2903
DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- A Del Mar man is recovering at a La Jolla hospital after he was run over in an alley as he walked home from a bar. Ben Nelson's father, Bruce, said he got a call from investigators telling him his son had been hit and apparently dragged several feet. The driver took off without calling for help. Nelson was found at least an hour after the crash happened. Nelson suffered a broken pelvis, fibula, tibia and femur. Fortunately, he did not suffer any brain or spine injuries. There are surveillance cameras that point towards the alley, but Nelson's friends and families are hopeful whoever hurt their loved one is caught or turns themselves in. Despite a partial government shutdown experts say could stretch into the new year, NORAD’s famous Santa Tracker will still be up and running. According to ABC News, hundreds of volunteers decked out in Christmas hats and military uniforms will still take calls from children around the world. The military told ABC News that the Santa Tracker won’t be affected because it’s run by volunteers at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. According to ABC News, a local newspaper ran an ad inviting kids to call Santa, but listed the wrong number.
