ENCINITAS, Calif. -- No dancing allowed. Sounds a little like the movie, “Footloose” right? Well, it’s real — and it’s the law in the city of Encinitas, California.“We got in trouble for people dancing here,” said Brie Cardosa, owner of Mr. Peabody’s Bar and Grill. The restaurant was fined ,000 for allowing their patrons to dance while listening to live music.Cardonas' restaurant has been providing food and live music for more than a decade. She said they have never had any run-ins with the law until they recent fine from the Alcohol Beverage Control.“We didn’t realize we were doing anything wrong,” Cardosa said.The fine stemmed from a city law that makes it illegal to dance in Encinitas during evening hours.Encinitas Councilman Tony Kranz believes his predecessors created the law in 1986 to prevent several dance clubs from being built in the city, or to dissuade people from behaving lewdly at alcohol-serving establishments.“I think it’s just the result of cities trying to limit their liability," he said. "And make it an enjoyable experience for everybody that comes out."The crackdown took place after the city received an overwhelming number of complaints from a number of area bars. Many Peabody’s fans have taken a stand by signing an online petition to let them keep dancing.You can find the petition here. Cardosa said dancing to music is a natural reaction, and found it hard to force her patrons to remain still. “We just don’t want to get in trouble if we’re dancing, or if someone starts moving around,” Cardosa said. “We don’t want to tell them that they can’t dance. It’s such a difficult type thing to explain to someone.”Kranz agrees. “I’ve been there before. and I’ve seen some dancing. I might have even swayed to the music a couple of times there,” he said. “The (Alcohol Beverage Control) interprets their rules that if you sway to the music, you could be in violation of the rules. That is not what city council is interested in having happen.”Encinitas City staff have started work on a revision to the current, and outdated law. In the meantime, Cardosa is hoping the petition persuades the council to let them stay as is. Her other options are to turn in a “deemed approved ordinance” application to temporarily be approved or to submit the “entertainment establishment permit,” also known as the “cabaret permit.” This would allow Mr. Peabody’s to have “dancers“ inside their venue.But that doesn't really align either. “We don’t want to be a dance club. We don’t want to be a dance venue,” Cardosa said. “I hope to have the support of the city behind us, and just you know, move on.”Cardosa said she will continue to host live music at the restaurant several nights a week, without dancing. Family members of a Tennessee woman accused of ramming a security barrier at the White House said she is mentally ill and needs treatment.Jessica Ford went before a judge Thursday after police in Washington, DC said she plowed into the White House fencing and was immediately taken into custody by the Secret Service.It was Ford's fourth and most dramatic effort to gain access to the White House in recent months. She was charged with three felonies.The question of why Ford did what she did was no mystery. Her family said she suffers from a mental illness and that they actually warned the Secret Service last week that Ford, armed with a BB gun, was again headed for the White House.The 35-year-old insists her children live in the White House, and told the judge in court that her fiance is the President. "She is very delusional. She thinks her children are in the White House. That's why she keeps going up there," said Victoria Walls, Fords' cousin.In Ford's most recent attempt to get to the White House, she thought it was the holiday season."She decided when she left (last week) it was Christmas Eve, and I got to be there by Christmas Day," said her mother Alice Wilson. Authorities were watching for Ford since her family called to warn them that she was in route with plans to ram a gate."I said you can't go do that. They will kill you," said Walls.Ford still went and the Secret Service was waiting."I think that's the reason they didn't kill her, because they knew she was coming and knew she had a BB gun," said Wilson.Ford faces felonies and possibly years in prison."Oh, I love her with all my heart," said Wilson. She said her daughter needs help. (KGTV) - A series of unfortunate events may have led to an albino red-tailed boa constrictor named "Lemony Snicket" disappearing from a North County museum. Officials with the EcoVivarium children's museum in Escondido, California believe Lemony disappeared on April 29 during a tour of the museum's Arthropod Jungle. During the tour, staff took Lemony out of its cage to show guests, before returning it to its enclosure and locking the gate.Unfortunately, a security camera facing Lemony's enclosure was damaged that same day and did not capture what could have happened.Staff said they fear the snake may have been stolen. They said a man in his 20s left the tour group and never returned shortly before the snake disappeared."We are all heartbroken, and just want him safely returned, no questions asked," the museum said of Facebook. The snake was rescued four-and-a-half years ago in San Diego from an owner who had neglected it.Lemony is about 7-feet long, and yellow and orange, and has a scar on its face.Anyone with any information as to the snake's whereabouts is asked to call EcoVivarium at 760-975-9690.The situation is similar to another missing reptile case recently in North San Diego County."Bubbles" the monitor lizard slinked away from Mike's Pets in Spring Valley in March. Mike Estevez, of the store, said getting the word out was key in Bubbles' return."It really helped a lot," Estevez said. "We got a lot of feedback and concern from people coming in."A radio listener who heard about Bubbles ended up safely locating the missing lizard several days later. 1677

Farm life is not easy, but sometimes that life picks you.“When we were little boys, I think it was my dad pushing us out the door all the time,” said orchard owner Curtis Rowley, with a laugh. “As you get older, it gets it your blood and you seem to stay around.”Rowley is a fourth-generation farmer in rural Utah.“Here on the side of us, we have a tart cherry orchard,” Rowley said, motioning with his hand. “We also have a gala block of apples.”However, Rowley’s specialty is peaches.“I know when they are perfect, not by color, not but size, but when I cut them open and smell them,” he said.Knowledge passed down through his family taught him how to dodge the always humming farm equipment. He knows what to do when mother nature turns on the AC. Unfortunately, there are some things that even a seasoned farming family cannot plan for.“We were still pruning when the COVID-19 pandemic hit,” Rowley said.Like many in this business, Rowley relies on outside help for planting, pruning and harvesting. He uses the H-2A government program that allows U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals in to fill temporary agricultural jobs.“As they shut down the Mexico border at the end of March, our guys happened to be right there at the time,” he explained.Rowley said luckily, the group got through, but now, it is the harvest and it’s all hands on deck.He is feeling the pinch.“It’s really tight,” Rowley said. “I won’t tell you it’s perfect.”The window for picking does not stay open for long.“We have somewhere between three and maybe four days if we’re lucky,” he said.Rowley said he has tried other options, like offering jobs to people furloughed or laid off.“They’ll come and help for a bit, but as soon as their jobs open back up, they leave and that’s understandable,” he said.The timing of the harvest also coincides with schools starting.“To hire high school kids to pick apples is just not going to happen,” he said.Rowley said they will squeeze through the fall harvest, but others will not be as lucky.“There’s a lot of people still looking for help,” he said.As for the future, this farmer said his family will remain planted, ready to weather whatever storm comes their way.“We’re planning on being here farming and continuing to grow this fruit,” he said. 2278

Federal authorities filed a lawsuit against a New Jersey landlord who allegedly demanded sexual favors from low-income tenants in exchange for housing assistance.On Wednesday, the Department of Justice filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against 73-year-old Joseph Centanni, who owns hundreds of rental units in and around Elizabeth, for "violating the Fair Housing Act by subjecting tenants to sexual harassment" since at least 2005.“The Fair Housing Act protects the right of all persons in our nation to rent a home without suffering sexual exploitation at the hands of abusive landlords. Demanding sexual favors from tenants, especially those who are financially vulnerable, is illegal,” said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Civil Rights Division in a statement. “The Fair Housing Act protects tenants from sexual harassment and retaliation by their landlords, and the Justice Department will hold accountable those who engage in such cruel, depraved, and illegal conduct and will work tirelessly to obtain relief for their victims.”The complaint alleges Centanni demanded that current and prospective tenants provide him with sexual favors in exchange to keep their place or a reduced rate in rent, and threatened to evict anyone who rejected his advances.“No one should ever be forced to provide sexual favors, or otherwise endure sexual harassment, as a condition to keep or obtain housing,” U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said in a statement. “Sexual harassment in housing is illegal under the Fair Housing Act, and we will vigorously enforce this federal law to end this depraved type of behavior.”According to the complaint, one victim said she approached Centanni last year because she was having problems paying her rent. He said he'd help her with rental assistance, and she asked what she needed to do in exchange."He then brought her to an empty apartment," the court documents alleged. "There, he asked her for a massage and exposed himself. He then subjected her to unwanted sexual touching by using his hands to move both of hers to touch his testicles and penis as she said words to the effect of 'no' and 'don’t do that.'" Afterward, Centanni helped the woman apply for rental assistance, the lawsuit claims.Another woman said she went to Centanni last year stating she was having problems finding another place to live after agreeing to move out, the lawsuit alleges.The lawsuit states Centanni then took the woman to an empty storage room, after asking the tenant how badly she wanted to stay in her apartment.“There, Centanni exposed himself and asked for oral sex,” federal prosecutors allege. “Because she felt like she had no choice, the tenant submitted to Centanni’s sexual demand. After this incident, Centanni allowed her to stay in her apartment.”According to the complaint, Centanni participates in the federal Housing Choice Voucher Program (also known as “Section 8”) and receives approximately 2,000 each month in federal voucher payments. 2998
