SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The United States Postal Service is handling nearly 16 billion deliveries this holiday season, a record number.Warren Burton, a program manager at the USPS, says it is a 12 percent increase from last year.“There’s a lot of online shopping,” he said, “a lot more than last year.” As a result, the USPS processing and distribution center at Carmel Mountain Ranch in San Diego added more seasonal workers. About 1,100 people are working around the clock up from the normal staffing of close to 900.“We gear up all year for this time of the year, we know it’s going to be non-stop, high volume-high demand,” Burton added.The White House declared Christmas Eve a federal holiday this year, but Burton says that USPS will remain open on Christmas Eve.“We greatly appreciate the gesture, but we’re going to keep working so we can keep the mail going,” Burton said.He says Dec. 20 is the last day to mail out a package or holiday card to make sure it is delivered by Christmas Day using regular shipping. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a man died in Fallbrook late Friday night.Deputies responded to the 440 block of Ammunition Road around 10:40 p.m. to assist the North County Fire Department with an injured man.When deputies arrived, they found a man identified as Nicolas Ramirez suffering from an unknown traumatic injury.Ramirez was then taken to the hospital where he later died. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Padres infielder Ian Kinsler has announced his retirement from baseball.The Padres' second baseman announced his retirement after 14 seasons in the major league, team announced Friday. Kinsler, 37, will remain with the Padres as an advisor to baseball operations. According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Kinsler is still owed .25 million on his contract, which he will reportedly work out with the team.Kinsler was placed on the disabled list last August over a herniated cervical disk, which prevented him from finishing out the season. The injury played a role in his decision to leave the game.“To be honest, it was a factor in my decision,” Kinsler told The Athletic. "It just felt like this is the end, time to move on. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County Office of Education is bringing solutions to families without internet access to start the school year.The “digital divide” was already in place before the pandemic. With an increased reliance on distance learning and working from home, it’s only gotten worse.Before coronavirus, 1 in 5 students in San Diego County were under-connected or not connected at all.Chief Technology Officer, Terry Loftus, with the County Office of Education is working to help fix that.“If the parent had an Android phone, that qualifies as connectivity, but it’s not broadband and it doesn’t meet the needs of distance learning,” said Loftus.The COE is stepping up to the challenge of bridging the digital divide that plagued about 100,000 families.“Approximately 36,000 of those were South and East county,” said Loftus. “Or our districts that have people on the Free and Reduced Meal Program and haven’t had access in the past.”Many families can’t afford cable or wireless connections, or were forced to cut the cord after losing their jobs.Others live in more rural areas where that connection isn’t possible.So, they’re adding satellite solutions and distributing hotspot devices.“The 5,000 devices that are going out in the next week or two in that initial order, zero are being paid for by families,” said Loftus.There are also options for undocumented families and those who don’t want to share personal information to secure a connection.“To get that service without having to give details about their financial background, immigration status,” said Loftus.Most of the new connections are coming at no cost to parents or students thanks in-part to money from the CARES Act.The COE is also working with legislators on Senate Bill 1130 that would build new infrastructure in communities that need it.They’re in the process of surveying families to see who still needs connectivity as their programs are rolling out. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three people were injured following a pursuit in Otay Mesa Monday afternoon.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies pulled the truck over around 2 p.m. for an unspecified traffic infraction.The driver, later identified as Christian Eduardo Saldana Medina, 26, stopped and cooperated with deputies.While deputies were checking records, Medina sped away at a “high rate of speed.” Deputies chased Medina for less than two miles before the truck ran into a tractor trailer at the corner of Pacific Rim Court and Camino Maquiladora.All three people inside the truck at the time of the crash were taken to the hospital, one by helicopter.Medina was arrested for felony evading and felony evading with injuries. A passenger, Edgar Quintana Valenzuela, 38, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.  895
