HUAYIN, Shaanxi, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers failed to close a breach of a flooding river embankment in northwest China's Shaanxi Province Sunday,rescue headquarters said.More than 3,000 soldiers and militiamen have been filling the gap of the embankment of Luofu River with stones and sand bags, and managed to narrow the 80-meter gap into 2 meters, said a spokesman at the headquarters.But the breach expanded again to eight meters wide as stones and sand bags ran out, he said.Luofu River, a tributary of Weihe River, breached Saturday morning.A total of 6,404 people from 1,587 households in Huayin had been evacuated before the flood early Saturday. No casualties have been reported.Torrential rains pounded Huayin City from 8 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday.

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. CHANGCHUN/HARBIN, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Workers were racing Thursday to retrieve the 3,000 chemical-filled barrels that were swept by floods into the Songhua River running through northeast China's Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces.Each barrel contains 170 kilograms of flammable chemical liquid, according to a press conference held by the Jilin city government Thursday. Another 4,000 empty barrels also were floating in the river."The barrels are well-sealed," Wang Mingchen, deputy secretary-general of the Jilin city government, said at the press conference.There had been fears that if the chemicals leaked due to barrel damage or explosions, the water in the Songhua River, a major drinking water source of tens of millions of people in the two provinces, would be contaminated.However, Ministry of Environmental Protection spokesman Tao Detian said Thursday that a water test conducted early Thursday morning showed the river water was not contaminated.
