San Diego County is on track to move into the most restrictive tier, meaning restaurants, personal care shops like nail salons, museums, zoos, places of worship, movie theaters, and gyms all have to operate completely outside. The county is expected to announce that rollback Tuesday, Sept. 22.Ricardo Zarate Jr is the Director of Operations for Leucadia Company, a group that manages three Encinitas restaurants, including Valentina and Moto Deli. He said they’ve been trying to adapt with the times, adding trees and decorations to their outdoor dining, but hearing the news that the community is moving in the wrong direction is hard.RELATED: What happens if San Diego County moves to California's most restrictive tier“You think ‘okay we’re doing our due diligence, we’re making steps, there’s progress,’ and then to find out there’s not going to be that progress and in fact there might even be some regress, it’s disheartening,” said Zarate.He said he anticipates more restaurants will likely permanently close if they have to shift to outdoor yet again. When asked about the roller coaster of opening and closing, he said his restaurants will make it, but knows it’s hard on others.“On one hand it would be nice to not be wondering when the next step back is going to come but on the other hand, I can see how some of our fellow restaurants do benefit, even if it’s briefly, from being able to open up their indoors,” he said.Jessica Huynh at Bella Paris Nails in Little Italy knows the benefits of being able to open indoors. Her nail salon does not have the space to open outside, so they stayed closed the whole pandemic. After almost six months of no business, they finally reopened when indoor services were allowed in September. Now, less than three weeks later, they’re faced with the possibility of only outdoor services again, which for them means another closure.“I don’t know if we can work outside, so maybe we close again,” said Huynh. 2070

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — University of San Diego is sidelining its plans to return to some form of on-campus classes this fall unless given approval by state and local officials.A statement from USD President James Harris read that due to the rising number of cases locally and in California, as well as the lack of reopening guidance for colleges, they will offer remote learning for all fall undergraduate and graduate courses.The undergraduate semester is still set to begin on Aug. 17, according to the school."At the time of my original announcement, the number of daily cases of COVID-19 in San Diego County was approximately 100, and given the shut-down order then in place, we were optimistic the situation would be much improved by the Fall," Harris' statement read. "Instead, the number of daily cases skyrocketed, and San Diego is now averaging more than 400 cases per day."With less than a month to go before we begin Fall classes for undergraduates, we have reached the point where a final decision has to be made."Originally, the campus planned to offer in-person courses as part of a hybrid approach to the academic year. USD says it can still pivot to the planned hybrid model if conditions improve. The school added that the campus will also continue to offer students options for remote or in-person classes when they receive permission to move forward with the plan."The good news is that all of the great work of the task forces preparing for the Fall will benefit us as we move forward. Due to their continuing efforts, we are prepared to pivot to our planned hybrid approach of both in-person and remote instruction when conditions improve and allow us to do so," according to USD. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When the pandemic forced San Diego's breweries to close, many turned to canning in order to continue selling their brews.Virginia Morrison, CEO and co-founder of Second Chance Beer Company, told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena canned beers is now the majority of their revenue."For us, that's really our only revenue stream now," Morrison said, adding that there was already a shift in popularity from glass to cans. "We've been putting out more cans since COVID than we've ever done before. We used to have maybe three or four releases, now I think at one point we had 14 cause that's all we can do. Every bit of beer we're making we're putting in cans."Now, the aluminum supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Morrison said a couple of weeks ago, the Brewers Association warned members of an aluminum can shortage.Morrison said the manufacturers her brewery works with are still able to fulfill orders, but she's unsure for how much longer."We need to know and plan and also work with them really closely to figure out how to minimally impact both our businesses," said Morrison.The Aluminum Association said in a statement, "The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally-friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."But according to the Can Manufacturer's Institute, aluminum isn't in short supply, but can makers are struggling to keep up with the demand.To make matters worse for Second Chance and other local companies, they're competing for the same supply big beverage makers use. Leading Morrison to believe that at a certain point, one of their last viable options for making money during the pandemic will disappear."I'm afraid that there are some breweries that won't make it just because of this," Morrison said. 1851

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two greater one-horned rhino calves took their first steps into their habitat for the first time this week at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.Next to their mothers Asha and Tanaya, the calves — born on March 25 and April 11, respectively — were finally able to explore their Asian Savanna habitat. Both pairs bonded while traversing the area, before intereacting with some of the other wildlife in the habitat.Tanaya and her female calf, which has not yet been named, enjoyed some wallowing in the mud, taking a cool dip, and meeting some of the blackbuck antelope and other animals in the 40-acre habitat.Asha and her male calf, named Arjun, explored hills and grassy areas. Arjun also met one of the habitat's Javan bantang (before quickly running back to mom's side."It’s great to see Asha and Tanaya introducing their calves to other wildlife for the first time," said Jillian King, senior wildlife care specialist, San Diego Zoo Safari Park. "Everything is new to the calves right now, so it will be interesting to watch them explore. We will keep a watchful eye on them, and look forward to them meeting more of the wildlife on the savanna soon."The greater one-horned rhino is listed as "vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. This is primarily because of habitat loss, poaching, and illegal rhino horn trafficking.The species, once widespread in Southeast Asia, is now only found in India and Nepal. There are an estimate 3,500 greater one-horned rhino left in the world. 1563

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While bars are set to open Friday, it's not going to look much different from restaurants right now, according to those in the industry.10News spoke with Nathan Colonero, the Director of Operations at Sandbox Pizza and The Tipsy Crow, and he said the only change will be businesses without a food license will be able to reopen and bars that serve food don't have to enforce a food order on each tab.Customers will be required to wear masks when they walk in and may only remove their mask once seated.Tables must be spaced at least six feet apart or partitioned.Colonero is hopeful the easing restrictions will continue, "who knows? Maybe three more weeks and no spike and we get a little more back to, the biggest thing for us is to get back to, if people are allowed to be in the venue, maybe at a lower capacity, just not seated."Many San Diego bars with food licenses have been open for the past three weeks and some are feeling the squeeze of the new restrictions."The 0 unemployment is killing businesses right now to get staff back," Colonero said. He said they're dealing with high minimum wage, former employees who left the area to live with their family during quarantine and those who are afraid to return to work for health reasons.He said another problem with hiring back employees is they have new cleaning duties under the county order, "everyone's kind of been forced to do jobs they don't like or want to do."Colonero said servers and bartenders coming back are also seeing less in tips, because of the limited capacity, and businesses are seeing hardly if any profit for the same reason."Unfortunately there's going to be a lot of restaurants and bars that aren't going to be reopening," Colonero said.He asks San Diegans who go out this weekend to bars and restaurants to be patient with workers who are juggling so many changes.Bars join nearly a dozen other businesses allowed to reopen Friday:GymsHotelsBars/wineriesZoos and indoor museumsFamily entertainment facilities (bowling alleys, batting cages, etc.)Day campsCampgroundsPro sports without fansFilm and TV productionCard rooms 2137
