(KGTV) -- First responders in Carlsbad are prepared for any emergency, thanks to their state of the art training facility."This is how we become good," says Carlsbad Fire Captain Scott Tucker. "This is our hallowed ground where we get to spend all the time, make the mistakes here, so we don't make them out there."The Carlsbad Safety Training Center spans four acres. It includes a four-story live burn tower, a two-story home, and a main street replica. It also has two shooting ranges, classrooms, and computer simulation rooms.The parking lot can also be used for driving simulations and tests."It's realistic training," says Carlsbad Police Captain Peter Pascual. "The officers can utilize what they learn in the training environment, out in the field."The shooting ranges are adaptable, letting agencies set up different scenarios. They can even drive cars into the range. "It allows us to get in the right frame of mind in how to survive and solve these problems in the field," says Pascual. "We try to create scenarios that are realistic and functional for the success of the officers in the field.""It allows us to get a good foundation in training and build on stuff that we normally don't get to do," says Tucker.Facility Manager Jason Kennedy says the complex tries to stay as modern as possible, always adding more ways to train."We're always looking forward, cause training is so dynamic," says Kennedy. "We're trying to look forward at what things are emerging in the environment."The facility has become so popular, other state and federal agencies have rented the facility from Carlsbad for their own training events.This year, 28 different agencies from around California and the rest of the United States have booked time to train in Carlsbad. Hundreds have stopped by either for tours or training since it opened."It is movie-esque," says Tucker. CANARSIE, Brooklyn — This past weekend has been excruciating for a Brooklyn woman who was the victim of a heartless robbery.Anaika Forbes' 13-year-old shih tzu pekingese was swiped from her parked car. The brazen theft happened Saturday at about 3:45 p.m. on Avenue N near Canarsie Road in Canarsie, where the vehicle was parked.Forbes, who lives in a basement apartment on Avenue N, was overwhelmed that day dealing with flooding in her unit due to afternoon showers.“I was just going back and forth to the car bringing my stuff out, it was raining and just so much was happening,” she told PIX11.Her dog, Taffy, was placed in the unlocked car during the shuffle.When Forbes stepped back into her home to grab a few more things, an unknown woman snatched Taffy, Forbes said.In surveillance footage obtained by Forbes taken from across the street, a woman is seen opening the passenger car door of Forbes' dark-colored car, grabbing the dog and nonchalantly walking away with her by the leash.“She’s not a barking dog. She’s super sweet; she would go with anyone,” a tearful Forbes said. “I just want her back.”Forbes, who canvassed the neighborhood all day and night on Saturday and for a good part of Sunday, has launched an online campaign to get Taffy back, even offering a 0 reward for her return.“Please return Taffy, no questions asked,” she said in a plea to the unidentified woman. “She is my everything, I’ve had her since she was 3 months old.” 1466

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man were arrested in connection with the shooting death of a young man in Carlsbad, police announced Friday.Just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday, police and fire crews were called to the 2300 block of Caringa Way in response to a report of an injured person at an apartment complex.The injured person, an 18-year-old man, was found in the complex’s courtyard with a gunshot wound, police said.Kelly, an apartment resident, told ABC 10News, “I was fixing dinner. I looked out the kitchen window and he was on the ground. I started performing CPR, but it was too late.”The victim was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity was not released.Following an investigation, Carlsbad police detectives identified two people linked to the man’s death and arrested them.According to police, a 16-year-old girl was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of manslaughter and gross negligent discharge of a firearm.Gerardo Gonzalez, 19, of San Marcos, was booked into Vista Jail on a felony child endangerment charge.No other information was made available as the incident remains under investigation. 1186

Chad Daybell was arrested Tuesday after investigators recovered what they believe are human remains on his property.A search warrant was executed at his home in Salem, Idaho Tuesday morning in connection to the search for two missing children — his 7-year-old stepson Joshua "JJ" Vallow and 17-year-old stepdaughter Tylee Ryan.The remains have not been identified.Police took Daybell into custody about a mile from his home as numerous police officers and FBI agents served the search warrant. He was booked into the Fremont County Jail several hours later. Specific charges were not disclosed, but authorities did say they were felony charges and that he was being held with no bond.East Idaho News reports Daybell's car was stopped about a mile from his home and police took him into custody.According to a news release from the Rexburg Police Department, its officers, with the assistance of the FBI and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, served the search warrant around 7 a.m. Tuesday.FBI Public Affairs Specialist for the Salt Lake office, Sandra Barker, has confirmed that the FBI is assisting with the search warrant.She told CourtTV there are about 20 FBI personnel on scene helping, including agents and support staff.The warrant is sealed, meaning that the information is only available to law enforcement officers working on this case.Numerous roads around the home are closed and drivers are being re-routed.Chad and Lori Vallow Daybell were found living in Hawaii in January.
