SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Since moving to San Diego three years ago, Angela Alean says her financial situation has been like a rollercoaster.“It has been like ups and downs,” she said.By night, she’s a student learning childhood development. By day, she’s an assistant teacher at a preschool in Pacific Beach.She’d like to become a lead teacher one day, but her education has left her with more than ,000 in student debt.Her financial goal is to pay that debt off as fast as possible. Alean is one of several San Diegans 10News will follow for the next year to monitor their successes and struggles while attempting to accomplish a financial goal.“When I think about me not having debt, I think about the possibility of me studying more, learning more about child development, learning more about how to work in a preschool, about better ways to teach children,” she said.Alean knew she needed a lesson in financial management and budgeting, so she turned to free lessons on YouTube.Now she closely tracks her expenses and spending, she’s on a “rice and beans” food budget, and she picked up a second job as a tutor.“I’m willing to make the sacrifice. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Shipping companies expect another record setting holiday season, which gives would be thieves ample chances to steal packages off of porches.This year, FedEx expects to ship 400 million packages during the holiday season. UPS says they'll deliver 750 million. The U.S. Postal Service estimates 850 million packages and 15 billion pieces of mail altogether, and Amazon says in 2016 they sent more than a billion items world wide through Prime.But this year, more companies have ways for you to protect your deliveries.Ring doorbells are becoming popular. They have motion-sensing cameras that connect to your smartphone, alerting users to see anyone that comes to the door. Their Facebook page is full of videos where owners scared off would-be thieves with an alarm or by shouting through a connected microphone.The company is also encouraging people to download their app. Even if you don't have a Ring Doorbell, the app will send you alerts any time suspicious activity is reported in your neighborhood.Also new this holiday season is the Amazon Key, an option introduced this fall. For about 0, you can buy a starter kit that includes a camera and a special door lock. Delivery drivers would be able to put packages inside your home.Amazon also has lockers all around San Diego that packages can be sent to. You get a code to open them to pick up your package.Meanwhile, the US Postal Service says people who are worried about theft can ship packages using the "Hold for Pickup" option. Packages are kept at the post office to be picked up. You can also require a signature for delivery, or re-route a package to a different address while it's being delivered. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Singer-songwriter Alessa Cara joined Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson this week in sending condolences to the family of the 12-year-old girl and her mother killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 805.Answering a Twitter message from Angelo Pizarro, whose sister, Aryana, and mother, Aileen, were killed in the I-805 crash, Cara told him to check for a private message. Cara added, "I'm so sorry. All my love to you and your family." 464

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several San Diego families got their loved ones home in time for the holidays.The Crew of the Future USS Tulsa arrived in San Diego Wednesday.  The ship is a brand new littoral combat ship that completed its maiden voyage from the Austal Shipyard in Mobile Alabama.The crew, from San Diego, had been gone for eight months. Before arriving in San Diego, the ship made several port calls and completed a successful transit through the Panama Canal.The ship’s commissioning ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2019, in San Francisco.  That is when the vessel will officially join the fleet. 628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego students have a new way to report claims of physical or sexual abuse in school.Thursday, District Attorney Summer Stephan announced the creation of a new, online reporting system for suspected abuse. She also announced the creation of the Student Safety in School Systems Task Force."It's critically important that these reports don't fall through the cracks," Stephan says. "The safety of our students depends on it."RELATED: La Jolla Bishop's School graduate describes former teacher sexually abusing her, alumni come forwardStephan says many times, students don't feel comfortable going to school administrators or officials with claims of abuse. They fear the claims won't be taken seriously, or the allegations could be covered up. The new online system gives the students a more secure feeling that their claims will be investigated.The task force will vet and review every submission and follow up with the appropriate law enforcement agency. They will also guide the person facing the suspected abuse to find resources and other available services for help.This will not replace the responsibility of mandated reporters within schools, Stephan says.
