SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California has temporarily banned overnight camping in some parts of its park after several interactions between campers and foraging bears. The decision was made to close down back-country camping in the Twin, Rainbow, Swan and Snag Lake areas after multiple visitors reported that bears had come to their campsites and searched their backpacks for food. The Sacramento Bee reported that the areas will remain open for hiking, but the park warns visitors to be careful. The National Park Service website said the policy will not only protect campers but “protect the bears by promoting the offending bear(s) to return to normal foraging behavior.” 724

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers on Tuesday advanced a bill that would let legislative leaders raise and spend more money to help their preferred candidates.Their vote came despite opposition from open-government groups who argued the bill would spur more pay-to-play politics at the Capitol. The bill would let leaders in the Legislature operate fundraising committees governed like state and county party committees. Such committees have higher contribution limits than regular campaigns and can give unlimited amounts to help state candidates.Senators voted 3-2 to advance the bill out of a committee.Lawmakers supporting the proposal argue it would help them combat the influence of independent expenditures. They also argue the bill would increase transparency by requiring more frequent disclosures by party and legislative leadership committees. 873

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- California lawmakers won't move forward this year on a plan to build denser housing in some single-family-home neighborhoods and closer to transit stations and jobs. The Senate Appropriations Committee voted Thursday to make the proposal a two-year bill, meaning action will be delayed until next year. The legislation was one of the more contentious proposals related to California's housing storage. Backers including tech companies and trade unions have argued allowing more homes around transit stations and loosening other rules could curb California's housing crunch.Making It in San Diego: Buy a deeply discounted condoBut critics say the measure threatened to change the character of some neighborhoods, worsen traffic and override local decision makers.State Senator Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco, says he's disappointed by the move. 889

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The 737 inmates on California's largest-in-the-nation death row are getting a reprieve.Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to sign an executive order Wednesday placing a moratorium on executions. He's also withdrawing the lethal injection regulations that death penalty opponents already have tied up in court. And he's shuttering the execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison that has never been used since it was modernized following the last execution in 2006.Newsom says the order won't alter any convictions or allow any condemned inmate a chance at an early release.A prosecutor says Newsom is usurping voters' will.California voters have supported the death penalty, most recently in 2016 when they narrowly voted to speed up the process. How to do that also has been tied up in litigation. 822

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to charge California water customers up to per month to help clean up contaminated water in low-income and rural areas. His plan will face resistance from some Democrats hesitant to impose new taxes.Up to 1 million Californians are estimated to have some type of contaminated or unclean water coming through their taps that can cause health issues.RELATED: California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposes state funds to help migrant families at borderNewsom has called it a "moral disgrace and a medical emergency."He wants to impose new fees on water customers and animal and dairy farms to pay for public water improvements. It's nearly identical to a measure that failed last session.A competing proposal by Democratic Sen. Anna Caballero would use money from the state's multibillion-dollar surplus to create a trust fund to pay for water improvements. 906
