SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported 603 new COVID-19 cases and nine additional deaths Saturday, raising the region's totals to 26,701 cases and 533 deaths.Officials said five men and four women died between July 11 and July 24 and their ages ranged from 60 to 93. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The ride-hailing company Lyft announced an expansion Wednesday of its pilot program at Camp Pendleton that streamlines access to the U.S. Marine Corps base for military members, their families and civilians who work at the military installation.Lyft launched the pilot program in collaboration with Marine Corps Community Services last year to make it easier for people living on the base to book a ride with a company like Lyft or Uber, which previously required security clearance to enter the base. The ``Base Mode'' feature is now integrated into the app, automatically matching base residents with eligible drivers.In addition, a new state law allows active-duty military members and their families to drive for companies like Uber or Lyft in California with a valid driver's license from any U.S. state. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County arson investigators were called to the scene of a commercial structure fire today in Spring Valley, authorities said.The fire began at 8:02 a.m. at a structure in the 300 block of Elkelton Place, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department reported.The fire was put out by San Miguel Fire District firefighters shortly afterward. The fire was isolated to the commercial structure, sheriff's officials said.No injuries were reported. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gas & Electric warned its customers Tuesday that a new wave of scammers is targeting them and threatening to cut off their service unless they pay their utility bills immediately with prepaid cards.The most common tactic reported is scammers impersonating SDG&E's billing department and asking for payment via Green Dot MoneyPak, a way of sending cash via prepaid or bank debit cards.According to the utility, in these scams criminals typically threaten immediate power shutoffs to scare customers into making an immediate payment. Once customers purchase prepaid debit cards or make wire transfers based on the scammer's instructions, they are asked to call another phone number to provide the card information, which allows the thieves to steal the money.It can be especially confusing for victims, according to an SDG&E statement, as the phone number scammers use might play a recorded message and menu options that mimic SDG&E's official customer service line, which is 1-800- 411-7343. When victims call the number provided by scammers, they might hear a recorded message that tells them they are calling SDG&E's business line. They are given different menu options, including one to pay their bill or to report a gas leak or power outage.Utility officials say SDG&E will never:-- call a customer to proactively ask for payment information during the call. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Unified School District officials joined local House members Thursday to urge the Senate to pass a bill to secure funding they say is necessary to reopen schools safely amid the COVID-19 pandemic.The school district and local elected officials said the HEROES Act's passage would bolster efforts to obtain what they said are much-needed protective measures in order to begin in-person learning.Though San Diego County schools were given the green light to reopen this week, its largest school district started the new school year online due to safety concerns regarding the virus.SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten said the district has made efforts to ensure student access to remote learning capabilities and school meals, but its ultimate goal is to reopen all campuses for in-person learning.However, she said more funding is needed in order to do so safely.Marten said the district will need to purchase more personal protective equipment, increase cleaning and daily health checks, and make safety modifications to numerous school buildings in order to address safety obstacles presented by the pandemic.Kisha Borden, president of the San Diego Education Association, the union representing the district's teachers, said many of the resources needed for in-person learning "require additional funding that our schools simply do not have and did not budget for."The House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act in May, but it still requires Senate approval. The proposal allocates billion for kindergarten through 12th grade education. The counter-proposal HEALS Act would earmark billion for schools, though critics say much of the funding will go to schools that commit to physically reopening.Reps.
