MILWAUKEE — Jacob Blake is out of the hospital and in a rehabilitation center, his attorney says.Blake was in Froedtert Hospital since Aug. 23, when Kenosha Police Officer Rusten Sheskey fired seven rounds into Blake's back.Blake's attorney declined to say when exactly Blake left the hospital, or how long he is expected to remain at the rehabilitation center. Blake's family said he had been paralyzed from the waist down. It appears his condition has improved somewhat, as he is now recovering in an unidentified rehabilitation center.Blake was initially handcuffed to his hospital bed after the shooting. Police said at the time that the handcuffs were necessary because Blake still had an outstanding warrant on him. After he posted bond and with the help of local lawmakers, the handcuffs were removed, and the police officers guarding his door left.Officer Sheskey has not been charged in the shooting. Sheskey's attorney says the officer believed at the time that Blake may have been trying to drive off with a woman's child. On August 23, Officers were initially called to a domestic incident. There, they attempted to arrest Blake on an outstanding warrant for third degree sexual assault charges. Blake tried to get into his car, when the officer fired his service gun into Blake's back. The shooting quickly became national news as protests erupted in Kenosha and across the U.S.After a few nights of demonstrations in Kenosha, a 17-year-old man opened fire on the crowd, hitting three people. Two people died and the third was taken to the hospital. The teen, Kyle Rittenhouse, was arrested at his home in Illinois and he is now facing extradition to Wisconsin and charges in the shooting deaths. Nancy Pelosi's bid to become speaker of the House is becoming more complicated, as 17 Democrats have now signed a letter saying they won't vote for her on the House floor, according to four sources with knowledge of the matter. If these Democrats stick to this pledge, the California Democrat, who is currently the leader of her party in the House, may not have the votes to become speaker. In addition to the 17, five additional Democrats have pledged not to support her on the floor but have yet to sign the letter, one of the sources said. The goal of the Pelosi critics is to force her out of the speaker's race by convincing her she does not have the votes to win. But Pelosi and her allies reject that notion and are confident of their chances, saying she will call their bluff on the floor.Pelosi first needs to win a majority of the House Democrats to win the caucus nomination on November 28. Then, she needs to win a majority of House members who vote for a candidate -- likely 218 -- and can't afford to lose too many Democrats on the floor.Democrats are poised to hold at least 227 seats in the new Congress compared to 200 for Republicans, with eight races still yet to be called by CNN.What's unclear is who will run against Pelosi on the Democratic side. Ohio Reps. Marcia Fudge and Tim Ryan both have told CNN they are not ruling out a bid.Drew Hammill, Pelosi's spokesman, projected confidence that she would get the votes."Leader Pelosi is very confident in her support among Members and Members-elect," Hammill said.A senior Democratic aide said Pelosi would not be deterred."Members on the 'list' are all to the right of Pelosi," the aide emailed. "Pelosi will take this to the floor in January, so she will be calling their bluff." 1758

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) says it performed the world's first dual heart-lung transplant of a COVID-19 patient in September. The hospital says the patient, described as a young man, had cardiomyopathy — a disease of the heart tissue that can lead to heart failure — before he contracted COVID-19 in June. The procedure, which was completed on Sept. 24, was also VUMC's first heart-lung transplant since 2006. Dr. Ashish Shah performed the complex surgery, along with Dr. Matthew Bacchetta.Shah said the patient's battle with COVID-19 seriously damaged his lungs and may have also further damaged his heart. By September, the patient was critically ill with advanced heart and lung disease. He was referred to VUMC from the University of Mississippi Medical Center."He was slipping fast, in and out of the hospital and certainly by the time we operated on him, his heart was really done," Shah said.Bacchetta and Shah performed the transplant using both lungs and the heart from the same donor, which the hospital says is standard in dual transplants. VUMC says the organs were from a donor who had hepatitis C, and that the hospital is one of the first centers to use such organs for patients awaiting heart and lung transplants. They say the patient has since left intensive care and continues to recover at the medical center, where he is doing well.According to VUMC, a dual heart-lung transplantation is rarely performed in the U.S. and typically only done at high-volume transplant centers, like Vanderbilt."This transplant, like every transplant we perform, serves as a great example of the critical role of teamwork in leading to good outcomes," said Dr. Kelly Schlendorf, the medical director of VUMC's Adult Heart Transplant Program. "It really does take a village.""It continues to lead the way in pioneering this strategy, which has significantly increased the supply of donor organs," VUMC said Friday in a release. This story was originally published by Laken Bowles on WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee. 2053

More details are coming out about Rudy Giuliani’s scenes in the upcoming “Borat” film, featuring comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. Earlier this summer, Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney and former mayor of New York City, called police after the incident.Reviews of Cohen’s movie, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” appeared online Wednesday ahead of its Friday release on Amazon Prime. Vanity Fair and The Guardian describe the scene with Giuliani in more detail, in which he agrees to an interview with a young woman in her hotel room.Cohen’s co-star in the movie, Maria Bakalova, is posing as a journalist and sets up an interview with Giuliani. They meet in a hotel room, “where he holds her hands, compliments her appearance, and follows her to the bedroom. She spends some time elaborately taking off their microphones; briefly, he lies down on the bed. His hand is in his pants,” writes Sonia Saraiya with Vanity Fair. The Guardian says Giuliani follows her to the bedroom to have a drink and “can be seen lying back on the bed, fiddling with his untucked shirt and reaching into his trousers.”At which point, Cohen runs into the room in character, and yells “She’s 15. She’s too old for you.” Bakalova’s character is 15 in the movie, she’s 24 in real life.Giuliani posted on Twitter Wednesday afternoon, saying the video was "complete fabrication. I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment. At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate. If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar." 1561

More than 30 states are reporting increases in opioid related overdoses and those from other drugs during the pandemic, particularly involving fentanyl, according to the American Medical Association. The government has taken steps to curb deaths during the pandemic by allowing for more flexibility in prescribing medications for opioid use disorder and lifting other restrictions on pain medications.Meanwhile, the National Safety Council is calling on businesses to get ready for an increase in substance misuse in the workplace.“Employers not only have a responsibility, they have a call to arms here to make sure as they bring employees back to work, that they are directly addressing their mental health and providing them the resources that they need to be able to navigate,” said Lorraine Martin, President of the National Safety Council. “It’s just as important as the PPE and sanitization for hygiene that we will all need to have when we come back to work.”Martin recognizes mental health and substance misuse are often interconnected. Now, with the additional stress and unrest related to George Floyd’s death on top of COVID-19, people may be self-medicating even more. The National Safety Council put out resources and tools to help businesses help struggling employees, but they believe the most important thing leaders can do is talk about it.“The most mature companies are addressing this head on,” said Martin. “We know that substance misuse is a disease, not a decision, and if you can come at it with that attitude and make sure you create that safe space for your employees, that can make all the difference.”Not addressing substance misuse is a serious threat to worker safety and costs a lot of money in terms of productivity, absenteeism and workers compensation claims. On the other hand, employees that work through these issues with their employer often come out on the other side more loyal and productive. 1937
