MIRAMAR, Calif. (KGTV) - The F-35C landed in Miramar Tuesday, the first of it's kind for the Department of Defense, according to officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.UPDATE: Officials later clarified the F-35C arriving at Miramar was the first for the Marine Corps. There are three versions of the F-35 Lightning II. The F-35C is the "carrier version", the largest of it's kind and able to land on an aircraft carrier's runway. The fighter jet is the most advanced in the military, "everything you look at is displayed in the helmet, I mean it's like in the movies," Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Cedar Hinton, USMC said.Hinton is the newest commander of the Black Knight Squadron at MCAS Miramar, who will inherit the incoming F-35Cs."This is an exciting time in the Black Knight history. This squadron was stood up in WWII like a lot of squadrons, this particular squadron's able to break a lot of milestones." He mentioned milestones that started in the 1950's with the F-9F Panther. That was the "Navy’s first successful carrier-based jet fighter" and landed with the Black Knights at Miramar. Then in the 1960's the squadron was the first in the Marine Corps to fly the F-4B Phantom. In the 1980's they were the first to fly the F/A-18.The F-35 got it's first test in combat in 2018, deploying to Afghanistan, and then in Iraq a year later."They've had some pretty good success with it, I mean it does what we paid for it to do," Lt. Col. Hinton said. It's record isn't pristine. The jet faced scrutiny when it suffered mechanical failures during development. In 2018, an F-35 crashed in South Carolina."I mean single engine airplane, but this engine is by far probably the most advance engine ever built... That engine is more reliable than two engines on an F-18 I'd say," Lt. Col. Hinton said.Miramar has been waiting for this moment since they retired the F/A-18 Hornet last June.Miramar will get another F-35C next week, and a third in March. The plan states the air station will get 75 jets over the next 10 years."We've got to start working the systems, we have to start integrating it with our software," Hinton said there's a lot of work to do to get the squadron up and running. He said they are working with a Naval squadron based in Lemoore. 2269

Most parents want to start saving for college while their child is young, but a new study by the Center for Michigan found that might be difficult. In Massachusetts, families with two children are paying, on average, more than ,000 for child care in a year. State tuition for colleges average around that same price."Reality hits when you become a parent,” says mom Yvette Schilling. “And you are working extra hard and working full time and so is your husband."  Schilling says when it comes to child care, the family has to be really mindful of the cost and budget accordingly. On average, parents pay nearly 0 a week for two children in child care. Care.com estimates it at more than ,000 a year.Figuring out how to pay for day care has been a struggle for many mothers."We don't have any family around, so that becomes a little bit of a challenge," Shilling says.  She says hiring a nanny would have cost her almost triple what she's paying for daycare.  "Is it worth it for me to work full time, so we can pay ,000, or should I just stay home and watch my kids myself?” Schilling asks.   So, how can parents save money for child care?According to the Care website, one option is to sign up for a dependent care account through your employer. You can set aside up to ,000 tax-free pay for child care.  If your employer doesn't offer a flexible spending account, take advantage of the child care tax credit. Each family can itemize child care expenses up to ,000 a year and apply a tax credit to it.  To off-set some costs, nanny sharing is becoming a popular trend, allowing two families to share a nanny and split the cost. 1685

Nearly 1-in-5 new coronavirus cases in the U.S. are among people in their 20s, according to CDC’s data. Those between the ages of 20 and 29 years old have been the largest age group of COVID-19 patients for most of the summer. This age group made up about 15 percent of positive cases in May, then grew to 20 percent in June, 23 percent in July and 21 percent of positive cases in August. In May, COVID-19 patients were more evenly split between 20 to 59 years old, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the summer progressed, however, other age groups stayed steady or declined as the 20-to-29 age group more than doubled between May and July.“Younger adults make up a large proportion of workers in frontline occupations (e.g., retail stores, public transit, child care, and social services) and highly exposed industries (e.g., restaurants/bars, entertainment, and personal services), where consistent implementation of prevention strategies might be difficult or not possible. In addition, younger adults might also be less likely to follow community mitigation strategies, such as social distancing and avoiding group gatherings,” CDC researchers wrote. They also said younger adults are more likely to have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, and could unknowingly transmit the coronavirus to others. The increase in cases among children and young adults between 10 and 19 is also sharp. In May, this age group made up 5 percent of total positive COVID-19 cases. They increased to 7 percent of cases in June, 10 percent in July and more than 11 percent of positive cases in August. The increase in younger patients has decreased the average age of COVID-19 patients in the U.S. from 46 years old in May to 38 years old in August.“Infection is not benign in younger adults, especially among those with underlying medical conditions, who are at risk for hospitalization, severe illness, and death,” the CDC states.Younger children, from infants to 9-year-olds, remained 2-4 percent of total positive COVID-19 cases from May to August.“Given the role of asymptomatic and presymptomatic transmission, strict adherence to community mitigation strategies and personal preventive behaviors by younger adults is needed to help reduce their risk for infection and subsequent transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to persons at higher risk for severe illness,” the CDC report concluded. This week, the U.S. topped 200,000 deaths from COVID-19. This is more deaths than any other country from the coronavirus. 2532

Monday marks the final opportunity for President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden to deliver their pitches before Election Day — and both candidates are taking full advantage. Both Trump and Biden have packed schedules on Monday and will host several campaign events — most of them concentrated in Midwestern swing states that could prove vital in their electoral maps.Trump will hold a whopping five campaign rallies on Monday — a final 12-hour sprint that will cover four states that he likely needs to carry in order to serve a second term.Trump began the day at 11:45 a.m. ET in Fayetteville, North Carolina — a state he narrowly lost to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and is still in play in 2020. The state is also in the midst of a key Senate race that could determine which party controls the body in the next session.During his speech in North Carolina, Trump decried poll numbers that show him losing in key swing states, calling them "fake." He also attempted to paint Joe Biden and other prominent Democrats as "criminals," citing reports about Biden's son that are based on questionable information.Trump's Monday blitz will also take him to Pennsylvania — the state many analysts say could be the "tipping point" state of the election. Record numbers of Pennsylvanians have already voted in 2020, but state regulations state that many of those ballots cannot be counted until Tuesday — meaning the state likely won't be called until later in the week. Finally, Trump will finish the day in two upper Midwest states that he unexpectedly took in 2016 — and where he will need a similar overperformance if he hopes to win them again in 2020: Wisconsin and Michigan.Trump's rally in Wisconsin will take place in Kenosha — the city that was the sight of unrest early this year following the police shooting of Jacob Blake.Biden will spend the majority of his final day of campaigning in Pennsylvania — underscoring the importance the state will have in the outcome of the election. The former Vice President will hold three events in the state on Monday, including a prime-time event in Pittsburgh alongside pop star Lady Gaga.At an event in Monaca, Pennsylvania — a town just northeast of Pittsburgh — Biden stressed the importance of labor unions in building the middle class, and painted Trump as an aristocrat."He only sees things from (the perspective) of Park Avenue," Biden said.On Sunday, the Trump campaign hit Biden for his planned appearance with Lady Gaga, calling the singer an "anti-fracking activist." Lady Gaga responded to the Trump campaign's release by tweeting at Trump, saying she was living "rent free" in his head. 2671
