CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Tuesday is transformation day at the Otay Ranch Town Center in Chula Vista. The open-air center converts to a bustling farmers market, playing host to dozens of vendors. 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt spent an afternoon with a welcoming group of local artisans, whose love of food, culture and community shines through. She also stopped by a sushi stand, making savory rice bowls with tempura shrimp. Next was South Bay Salsas, a beautiful blend of fresh, seasonal Mexican/American fusion. “Every week, it's a little different. Mangoes are fresh, sometimes a little more ripe. You take it like it is”, says South Bay Salsas owner Scott Strickland. Strickland and his wife have grown their booming Chula Vista business by adding to their seasonal selections. New to the farmers market this day was Frida’s street tacos. Owner Robert Ayala tried for 3 years to get a stand at the farmers market. Ayala says his first day was a great success. “Serving our people, our community, with our tacos," Ayala said.The love each of these vendors brings to their cooking comes through in every bite. It wouldn’t be a farmers market without farm to table produce. Remberto Cepera owns a produce stand, selling fresh fruit grown on his land. On this day, he has fresh picked prickly pears.“We picked these yesterday," Cepera said.The devotion to his craft is evident. He has seen these beautiful fruits through winter’s frost and summer’s heat. The taste is extraordinary.“It's delicious, and it's good for you," said Cepera. There is a lot more to this farmers market than the farm. There is something for people of all ages. You can take a trip back in time with bomber jackets or flashy disco jackets. A balloon artist delights children while their parents shop.“A lot of people come here for a good time with the family. Tons of great food, tons of great art” said Leo, a balloon artist who has lived in Chula Vista his whole life. He has performed at the farmers market for the past decade. (KGTV) - Chula Vista police are now investigating multiple fires that broke out in over the span of a few days in the early hours of the morning.Captain Linda D’Orsi, Public Information Officer for the Chula Vista Fire Department, said they started early in the morning Sept. 17 and most have been fences and vegetation that burned. That Thursday morning, crews responded to multiple fires that started in the span of about half an hour, starting on Lake Crest Dr. & Wueste Rd, moving to 1120 Eastlake Parkway, then Telegraph Canyon Rd and Buena Vista Way and finally E. J St and Paseo Ladera.Just about two days later, crews then responded to a fire at the playground at Veteran’s Park. Karina Lodin lives across the street. She said she woke up to see the flames, then she called 911 and her husband took a video of the blaze.“For a second there, with everything that’s going on in California with all the wildfires, and you see this big fire outside your house, you start panicking like is my house going to catch up on fire,” said Lodin.She was disheartened to see the play structure flattened because it was a spot her son loved to play.Just one day after that, another fire nearby on Martin Place, also in the early hours of the morning.“As of this latest one, we have now requested our PD liaison because there seems to be a trend and we want to get to the bottom of this,” said Captain D’Orsi.Captain D’Orsi said they have not found anything left behind at each scene and have not found any witnesses with information on people in the area.“No obvious evidence left at the scene, no matches no flares,” she said.She added that anyone with information is asked to call the Chula Vista Police Department non emergency line at 619-691-5151.“We just want the community to be aware and be willing to provide information if they have any,” said Captain D’Orsi. 1894

(KGTV) - Arson investigators are looking into a fire that damaged a Mexican restaurant in Chula Vista late Thursday evening.The fire at Tacos Y Mariscos Imperial, located on 2490 Main Street, was reported at around 10:15 p.m., according to fire officials at the scene.Firefighters said the blaze started outside and quickly spread to the front of the restaurant.No one was inside the restaurant at the time of the fire.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 491

(KGTV) -- A Hazmat crew was called to a propane leak at a home in Chula Vista Tuesday night. Crews at the scene tell 10News that a food truck parked in the driveway of the home was leaking propane. Initially the plan was to jack the truck so crews could access, but they were unable to do so. They're now planning to safely light off the propane until it burns off. At this time one home has been evacuated, others may be evacuated soon. *This is a developing story. 10News will continue to update as details become available.  595

Managers organize data.It sounds like a lot. But a group of Chula Vista students has it down to a science.Rancho Del Rey Middle School's Royal Robotics team is a "well-oiled machine," as they like to put it. And generally, some of them will be tournament champions so we do have to make our robot highly effective to combat them,"And the team has put in long hours to perfect their creation."They take the robot home with their parents' help and work on the weekends," teacher Kirk Braito said. "It's just an amazing amount of dedication."Thanks to the completeness of their design notebook, which houses all their data, the team hopes to grab the award for best design and have a championship banner to hang at Rancho Del Rey.But the team faces one last obstacle, getting to Kentucky."It is an enormous financial obligation that I'm trying desperately to make up because the funding is basically all us," Braito said.The team has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses and has raised almost half of their goal.
