The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down more than 800 points on Tuesday — a day after the Dow dropped more than 1,000 points in the biggest single-day loss of 2020.The Dow finished Tuesday down 878 points, marking the fourth-largest one-day drop in the market's history. Fears about the worldwide spread of COVID-19, better known as coronavirus, have prompted a slowdown in global markets. The CDC compounded fears of the spread of the disease Tuesday when it said that Americans need to prepare for "significant disruptions" to their daily lives."Ultimately we expect we will see community spread in this country," CDC Director of Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Dr. Nancy Messonier. said. "It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness."The two-day drop has wiped out all year-to-date gains the Dow has made since the new year began. The loss also comes hours after President Donald Trump attempted to assuage fears of a global economic slowdown. Speaking at a press conference in India, Trump claimed that his administration would prevent the spread of the virus. "I think it's going to be under control and it's going to work out fine," Trump said. 1309
The Democratic National Committee plans to meet with 2020 campaigns next week to hand out an "affirmation form" for candidates to sign and certify they will run and serve as members of the Democratic Party, a DNC official said Tuesday. The announcement follows Bernie Sanders' entry into the 2020 campaign earlier Tuesday — his second consecutive presidential election. An independent who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, Sanders rankled some Democrats in 2016 when he ran for the nomination even though he wasn't an official member of the party.DNC members passed a new rule last August, which was seen as a response to the Sanders campaign, requiring all candidates "to affirm in writing" that they "are a member of the Democratic Party, will accept the Democratic nomination; will run and serve as a member of the Democratic Party."According to the DNC, all the campaigns who have announced have been invited to the meeting. Once they receive the form, they will have a week to return it to the DNC."The DNC will present presidential campaigns that have currently announced their candidacy or the creation of an exploratory committee, with the rules and other materials next week at a briefing and this will include the candidate affirmation form," the official said. "As any additional candidates enter the race, they will be provided with the same information and will be required to return the form in the same time frame."The Sanders campaign didn't immediately respond to say whether the senator would sign the form.Sanders officially jumped into the 2020 race with stronger party support than he had four years ago. Both Democratic members of his state's congressional delegation, Sen. Pat Leahy and Rep. Pete Welch, endorsed him. According to a campaign official, Sanders has already raised more than million dollars since the morning announcement. 1878

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam has granted executive clemency to Cyntoia Brown by commuting her life sentence. The governor's office announced the decision Monday morning. She will be released to parole supervision on August 7, 2019, after serving 15 years in prison.“This decision comes after careful consideration of what is a tragic and complex case,” Haslam said. “Cyntoia Brown committed, by her own admission, a horrific crime at the age of 16. Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to serve at least 51 years before even being eligible for parole consideration is too harsh, especially in light of the extraordinary steps Ms. Brown has taken to rebuild her life. Transformation should be accompanied by hope. So, I am commuting Ms. Brown’s sentence, subject to certain conditions.”As part of her parole, she cannot violate any state or federal laws and will be subject to a release plan approved by the Tennessee Department of Correction and special supervision conditions, including employment, education, counseling and community engagement requirements.Brown's parole supervision will continue until August 7, 2029, at which point her sentence will expire. In 2006, she was convicted of first-degree murder, felony murder and aggravated robbery in the killing of Antioch realtor Johnny Allen. She was sentenced to life in prison. At the time of the crime, she was 16-years-old. Advocates have said that Brown, now 30, was a victim of sex trafficking and shot the 43-year-old in self-defense. The man she killed 1590
The American Academy of Pediatrics is calling on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to immediately recall the Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play after it has been tied to at least 32 sleep-related infant deaths. A new analysis by Consumer Reports, published on April 8, has tied 32 infant deaths to the rocker. This comes after it was tied to AAP says the previous warning did not go far enough to ensure safety and protect infants. That warning asked parents to stop using the product when the infant reaches 3 months of age or is capable of rolling over. The new Consumer Reports analysis concluded that the 32 deaths, which took place between 2011 and 2018, included babies that were less than 3-months old. The cause of death listed for some of the babies was asphyxia, or the inability to breathe caused by the babies’ position. “This product is deadly and should be recalled immediately,” said Kyle Yasuda, MD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “When parents purchase a product for their baby or child, many assume that if it’s being sold in a store, it must be safe to use. Tragically, that is not the case. There is convincing evidence that the Rock ‘n Play inclined sleeper puts infants’ lives at risk, and CPSC must step up and take immediate action to remove it from stores and prevent further tragedies.” AAP is urging parents of children of all ages to stop using the product immediately. They say stores should remove the rocker from their shelves. “We cannot put any more children’s lives at risk by keeping these dangerous products on the shelves,” said Rachel Moon, MD, FAAP, chair of the AAP Task Force on SIDS. “The Rock ‘n Play inclined sleeper should be removed from the market immediately. It does not meet the AAP’s recommendations for a safe sleep environment for any baby. Infants should always sleep on their back, on a separate, flat and firm sleep surface without any bumpers or bedding.” 1949
