LOS ANGELES, June 5 (Xinhua) -- A latest study has found no evidence that screening for ovarian cancer may reduce the risk of dying from the disease, it was reported on Sunday.Screening, however, does increase the likelihood of unnecessary invasive procedures, according to researchers at the University of Utah.The researchers presented their findings at an on-going meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago, The Los Angeles Times said.Researchers studied 78,216 women, ages 55 to 74, who participated in the National Cancer Institute's Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial. Half of the women received the usual care from their OB-gyns, and half received a CA 125 screening every year for six years and an ultrasound every year for four years. They were then followed for a maximum of 12 years.The researchers observed 212 ovarian cancers in the screened group and 176 in the normal care group. There were 118 ovarian cancer deaths in the screened group and 100 in the normal care group. The differences were not statistically significant. Overall, there were 2,924 deaths from all causes in the screened group and 2,914 in the normal care group.But the researchers also observed that 3,285 women had false- positive diagnoses from the screening. Among those, 1,080 underwent surgery that included an oophorectomy (surgical removal of one or both ovaries). Fifteen percent of those who had surgery developed major complications as a result. Overall, 1,771 women in the screened group (7.7 percent) had an oophorectomy, compared with 1,304 in the normal care group (5.8 percent)."We conclude that annual screening for ovarian cancer ... does not reduce disease-specific mortality in women at average risk for ovarian cancer but does increase invasive medical procedures and associated harms," the researchers said in the study.New data presented at the meeting also showed that the widely used cancer drug Avastin can improve treatment of ovarian cancer, The Times said.About 21,880 American women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year and about 13,850 die from it, according to the American Cancer Society. Because it produces few symptoms, the disease is typically not diagnosed until it has become advanced and spread throughout the body. As a result, five-year survival is only about 30 percent, and the disease is one of the five most deadly cancers among women. Being able to detect the cancer at an earlier stage when it might be more curable could thus, theoretically, improve the survival rate.The tests most commonly used to detect ovarian cancer include a transvaginal ultrasound to look for tumor masses and a blood test that screens for increased levels of a tumor marker called CA 125.

WASHINGTON, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Using the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered a fourth moon orbiting the icy dwarf planet Pluto, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Wednesday in a statement. The tiny, new satellite, temporarily designated P4, was uncovered in a Hubble survey searching for rings around the dwarf planet.P4 was first seen in a photo taken with Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 on June 28. It was confirmed in subsequent Hubble pictures taken on July 3 and July 18. It is the smallest moon discovered around Pluto. It has an estimated diameter of 8 to 21 miles (13 to 34 km). BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) – The pressure of modern society is taking a toll on sexual satisfaction, experts say following the release of an online survey.About 34 percent of people polled in the survey said that they are unsatisfied with their sex lives, with 6.5 percent "very unsatisfied".Another 32 percent condemned their sex lives as "just so-so".The survey interviewed more than 3,000 people, aged between 15 and 55, with men accounting for 74 percent of the interviewees.It was conducted by the China Population Communication Center and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences from May 1 to June 20. The survey did not give a margin of error.Only 23 percent of respondents said that they are "satisfied" with their sex lives, with 3.6 percent "very satisfied", according to the survey.But women seem to have a higher rate of satisfaction than men, with only 26 percent saying they are unsatisfied. The rate for men is 42 percent.The rate of sexual satisfaction among Chinese people is below the global average of 44 percent, according to an earlier survey by Durex. The 2007 Durex Global Sexual Wellbeing Survey questioned more than 26,000 people in 26 countries about all aspects of their sex lives - including satisfaction levels.Jiang Hui, president-elect of the Chinese Society of Andrology, attributed the lower rate of sexual satisfaction among Chinese people to rapid economic growth, which inevitably increases work and social pressure.Health problems associated with a modern lifestyle, such as diabetes and hypertension, are also to blame, he said.Jiang said his department of andrology used to receive about 10 patients a day 10 years ago. SAN FRANCISCO, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Apple Inc. has been awarded a long sought-after patent for touch screen functionality on portable devices, a set of exclusive rights expected to play into its current litigation against its counterparts in the mobile device market, U.S. media reported on Wednesday."A computer-implemented method, for use in conjunction with a portable multifunction device with a touch screen display, comprises displaying a portion of page content, including a frame displaying a portion of frame content and also including other content of the page, on the touch screen display," the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office patent abstract reads.Apple filed for the patent in December, 2007.Apple's patent essentially gives it ownership of the capacitive multitouch interface the company pioneered with its iPhone, on- line computer magazine PCMag quoted a source who has been involved in intellectual property litigation on similar matters as saying.The latest patent could produce a new round of lawsuits over the now-ubiquitous multitouch interfaces used in smartphones made by the likes of HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Research in Motion, Nokia, and others that run operating systems similar in nature to Apple's iOS, like Google's Android, said the patent expert.Apple has not immediately responded to request for comment on whether it will use the latest patent against competitors.Apple is currently involved in several patent-related battles with other companies. Nokia sued Apple in October 2009 for allegedly infringing patents the Finnish phone maker owns related to wireless handsets.Apple countersued Nokia in December 2009, accusing Nokia of infringing 13 Apple patents related to the iPhone.
