LHASA, June 9 (Xinhua) - The 11th Panchen Lama urged students in Lhasa to study hard on Wednesday during a roundtable held at the University of Tibet, an initiative the 20-year-old Tibetan Buddhism leader proposed during his visit to Tibet."Life is too short. So you should seize every opportunity to study, to learn knowledge, and then you will succeed," the bespectacled, maroon-robed Panchen Lama said while speaking before nearly one hundred students in the university's assembly hall. BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have launched crackdowns all over China to curb online soccer gambling as the 2010 World Cup kicks off in South Africa.More than 100 people have been detained for participating in online soccer gambling with more than 10 billion yuan (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) in funds involved in one case in Yuyao City, east China's Zhejiang Province, said Dong Xiaowei, deputy chief of the provincial public security bureau.More than 70 gambling groups have been cracked for online soccer gambling this year with more than 300 arrested, he said.Similar cases have been uncovered in Beijing, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Fujian and Shandong.There are about 2,000 Chinese and offshore websites for soccer gambling in China, and the membership of some websites amounts to one million, according to Public Security Ministry data.Gambling is prohibited on the Chinese mainland by law.

HAIKOU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Conson landed at Yalong Bay of Sanya City, in south China's island province of Hainan, late Friday, causing casualties.Conson made landfall at 7:50 p.m., packing winds of up to 126 km per hour at the center, according to the disaster prevention office of Sanya, a tourist resort.It brought heavy rains and strong winds to Sanya, uprooting trees, pulling down billboards and light poles and partly cutting power supply.A security guard was buried in debris after a giant billboard toppled at about 7:26 p.m.. The man was found dead at about 11 p.m. after rescuers pulled away the billboard with the help of machines.A motorcycle rider was hit by a falling billboard and died at the site at about 8 p.m..The typhoon is expected to hover in the island for about 9 hours before it enters Beibu Bay on Saturday morning.The city had recalled to port all fishing boats by Friday noon and almost 40,000 people across the island had been relocated by 4:30 p.m..The typhoon, the first to hit China this year, has triggered high waves and cut some village roads.
BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday expressed their condolences to the families of the eight Hong Kong tourists killed in a hostage crisis in the Philippines.In a joint letter to Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Hu and Wen expressed their deep sorrow for the families of those killed and consolation for the injured."We are in grave shock and grief on hearing that eight Hong Kong compatriots fell and many others were injured in the Manila hostage incident," the letter said."We hereby express our grave condolences and our deep sympathy to the families of the Hong Kong compatriots, and we hope the injured will recover soon," the letter said.Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday also expressed his condolences in a letter to Tsang.Eight Hong Kong tourists were confirmed dead and seven injured, two seriously, in Monday's incident in Manila, an official of Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said Tuesday.The coachload of Hong Kong tourists were held hostage for more than 10 hours by a former policeman who was protesting his dismissal before police commandos stormed the vehicle.
