BALI, Indonesia, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Saturday that an immediate task for East Asian nations in the face of the global financial crisis was to maintain continuous, rapid development of the region's economy.Addressing the 6th East Asia Summit, Wen said East Asian nations should provide momentum for the world economy's robust, sustainable and balanced development."We should continue to strengthen cooperation and the summit should play a strategic role in this regard," he said.Wen put forward a five-point proposal for boosting the regional economy:First, coping with the international economic and financial crisis should continue to be regarded as a priority, he said.East Asian nations should implement appropriate fiscal and monetary policies in accordance with their national conditions, shore up market confidence, and enhance coordination in the macro-economic policy and financial cooperation.Second, Wen said the region should earnestly carry out and improve agreed free trade arrangements, steadily advance the building of new free trade areas, and further open markets.The Chinese premier called on East Asian nations to counter protectionism and properly handle international trade frictions.Third, the region should encourage expansion of investment and increase investor confidence, he said.It should boost the inner drive for its development through such ways as industrial transfer and regional interconnection, Wen said.Fourth, he called for prioritizing sustainable development as a long-term cooperative goal, stronger cooperation in key fields, help for East Asian countries to transform their economic development model, and intensified cooperation in such areas as energy-saving, environmental protection, education and disaster control, so as to enhance development potential.His final point urged overcoming challenges brought by non-traditional security threats to create a better environment for development, and strengthening cooperation in the fields of information exchange, capacity building and emergency response.Wen said that, as a strategic forum, the EAS facilitated mutual understanding and cooperation between East Asian nations."Under the new situation, we should continue to regard the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as the dominant power of cooperation at the summit and make efforts to seek and expand interest junctions," he said.China was willing to work with all sides to make the summit more fruitful and benefit more countries and peoples, the Chinese premier said.Echoing Wen's remarks, participants at the summit said under the current international political and economic situation, East Asian cooperation should continue to wield the influence of ASEAN domination and the existing mechanism to intensify mutual support and coordination, and deepen cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, finance, food security, energy security and disaster relief.

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or China's cabinet, has decided to create a food allowance for about 26 million needy students nationwide, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.Each student will receive an average of three yuan (47 cents) daily from the central budget, said a statement issued after a State Council meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.The policy will be implemented on a trial basis in 680 less-developed counties, the statement said.Authorities will have to allocate a total of 16 billion yuan annually from the central budget to meet the policy's requirements, it said.The money will be given to schools instead of directly to the students' families, allowing the schools to provide more and better food in their canteens, the statement said.Efforts will be made to build better canteens in rural primary and middle schools, the statement said.The statement added that daily allowances for needy students at primary boarding schools will also be increased from three to four yuan, while those for students at middle boarding schools will rise from four to five yuan.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Debates in the medical field developed on Monday as a U.S. government panel recommended that men of all ages should stop getting prostate cancer blood screenings.The United States Preventive Services examined all the evidence and found little if any reduction in deaths from routine P.S.A. screening and suggested that the test does more harm than good to healthy men.The P.S.A. test for prostate cancer, a blood test to screen for a protein that may indicate cancer, has become widely used because it can help detect tiny tumors at a very early sta ge, when they are theoretically most treatable.Unfortunately, according to the task force, the vast majority of the results are false-positives: the men don’t actually have cancer. And most of those found to have cancerous cells would not suffer ill effects because their cancer is so slow-growing that it would not cut short their lives. Those with faster-growing cancers may also not be helped if the cancer is extremely aggressive.After the recommendation came out last week, many prostate cancer specialists have been pushing back.Urologist Dr. Mark DeGuenther said this recommendation is more about saving money than saving lives. He said death rates from prostate cancer have dropped 40 percent since men began getting screened at age 40 and he says it will save taxpayers and patients more money in the long run to diagnose and treat cancers earlier rather than wait and have to provide expensive care for advanced stage cancers."We all agree that we've got to do a better job of figuring out who would benefit from P.S.A. screening," said Dr. Scott Eggener, a prostate cancer specialist at the University of Chicago. "But a blanket statement of just doing away with it altogether ... seems over-aggressive and irresponsible."Dr. Deepak Kapoor, chairman and chief executive of Integrated Medical Professionals, which includes the nation's largest urology practice, said "We will not allow patients to die, which is what will happen if this recommendation is accepted."That task force's recommendation isn't final - it's a draft open for public debate. SYDNEY, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Children with fat fathers are more likely to be obese by age of eight or nine than those with healthy weight fathers, a new study by researchers at Australia's University of Newcastle found on Thursday.Researchers at the University of Newcastle found that children who had an overweight or obese dad were four times more likely to follow in their father's footsteps than those with a dad in the healthy weight range.They also found in the study that only having an obese or overweight mum in the family did not have the same effect.Lead researcher Emily Freeman said it was still unknown why overweight dads had such a significant effect on their children's weights.The researchers conducted their study using data collected from 3000 Australian families between 2004 and 2008 for a longitudinal study.They looked at the weights of children when they were aged four to five and then again when they turned eight and nine years old.According to Freeman, around 25 percent of Australian children are overweight or obese.She said helping fat dads lose weight could make a difference to the youngsters.
