PHOENIX — Besides being our best friends, there are plenty of important jobs our dogs can be good at, like assisting people with disabilities, arson investigations and police work.  But is there a way to find out what is on a dog's resume before they go through all of that expensive training?  Researchers at the University of Arizona believe they may have found a solution. It is called the Canine Aptitude Test and it is in the early stages of development. The test is for adult dogs and looks to see if a dog's cognitive behavior will dictate where they would have more success as a working dog. "With assistance dogs that help people with disabilities, only about 50 percent of the dogs who begin training ultimately make it through," said Arizona Canine Cognition Center Director Evan MacLean. That means that major amounts of money are going to the dogs with no return on investment.For those who rely on these pets to live their lives, they are forced to wait sometimes up to two years or more."If that were any other kind of medical procedure it would be, we would think about this as a horrible thing," MacLean explained. "I need this operation and there's a two-year waiting list to get it. So, we would do something about that. So we want to do something about that with the dogs, too." Shelby Smith spoke to the University of Arizona on the impact an assistance dog has had on her life with a disability."Picasso to me is more than independence ... he's my best friend," Smith said. "He's someone I lean on ... depend on to get through daily challenges that comes with having a disability." MacLean said that stories like Smith's pushed him to really ramp up his research."For a long time, we've been interested in whether you can predict which dogs will become good working dogs based on aspects of their psychology or their cognition," MacLean said. Their next step is to determine if they can see these skills in puppies as well as testing a dog's genetic makeup. 2097

PALATINE, Ill. – Art education in grade schools has historically struggled with resources and funding. As millions turn to the arts to deal with stress and anxiety, educators are being forced to stretch the limits of their creativity. This fall, they say teaching acting, music and art will be more challenging than ever.“We do lots of different things. We do ceramics. We do 3D sculpture. We do drawing and painting. And it's really a hands-on program,” said elementary school art teacher Paul Dombrowski.Dombrowski is two years away from retirement and trying to relearn how to teach.“COVID, it has really turned the educational world upside down and we're kind of baptism by fire of having to figure out what we're going to do and how we can service these kids,” he said.High school theater director Britnee Kenyon’s district decided on a full remote program weeks ago.“For me, that meant really reconfiguring our entire theater program, theatrical season, everything, because as most people know theater needs an audience and theater needs people,” said Kenyon.One of her six productions had to be eliminated. She’s now dealing with streaming rights to put on her productions online.But the recent streaming success of “Hamilton” has proven that the show can go on.“It's not in the way that we expected but we can still do theater and families can watch it,” said Kenyon. “Maybe on the bright side, families from all over the country will now be able to watch it.”She’s still working out how her acting students will learn, rehearse and perform this year.“Not being able to play theater games together, not being able to make eye contact with a human being and believe that they're making eye contact with you back, because you're actually looking at your screen, that in and of itself is a conundrum that will be really interesting to figure out,” said Kenyon.For Dombrowski, a diabetic making him high-risk for getting coronavirus, his classes will all be virtual.“I'm kind of scared to have to teach it through the computer,” he said. “I'm looking at a screen of 28 children. It's really an impersonal thing. It's hard to make connections with the kids that way.”Even more challenging is that he may be instructing students from all of the schools in the district with differing resources and abilities.“We have 4,000 children that are going to be working from home and some may have a piece of notebook paper and a pencil. Others may have every marker and watercolor set that you can imagine,” said Dombrowski.Online or in-person, the ultimate goal for these educators, they say, is to create a special space for all their students.“A place where they can come and know they're safe and when they leave my classroom, I want them to feel like they're the best artist in the world,” said Dombrowski.Kenyon says she will do the best she can.“I hope this ends up being something that we can look back on and say it was a horrible time in our history. When you know at the outset that you’re in for emotional highs and lows, it’s easier to shrug off those lows and keep on truckin’.Here’s why 2021 will be a rough year for first-time home buyers — and how to manage your emotions during the process.Why buying a home in 2021 will be toughThere aren’t enough homes for sale to meet demand. At the end of October, the most recent month with available data, 1.42 million existing homes were available for resale. At that month’s sales pace, it would take just 2.5 months to sell every home on the market — an all-time low, according to the National Association of Realtors. The supply of new homes for sale was enough for 3.3 months, tied with the previous month for a record low.Supply is low because buyers are pouncing whenever homes become available. Most existing homes sold in October — 7 in 10 — were on the market less than a month, according to the NAR.With a slender stock of homes selling fast, buyers have little power. “The control is in the seller’s hands because of supply and demand,” says Terri Robinson, a Realtor with Re/Max Select Properties in Ashburn, Virginia.Set realistic expectationsExpect months to elapse between the first step of checking your credit reports to the final step of closing on the home. “The first thing that I hope people understand is it’s not an overnight process,” says Marc J. Jenkins, a real estate agent with Prime Property Partners in Atlanta.Jenkins tells first-timer clients that it typically takes five to eight months to buy a home. Understanding that homebuying timeline “prepares them mentally, emotionally and financially to see this process through.” Would-be buyers are prone to burnout if they expect the process to take a month, he says.Everyone wants a bargain, but buyers need to recalibrate the meaning of that word so it applies to today’s competitive environment. “A bargain, if I were to redefine that, is the home that you want for the price that you’re willing to pay,” Robinson says.Know where you’ll compromiseMore than three-quarters of home buyers in their 20s and 30s made compromises, according to NAR’s 2020 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report. The most common compromises had to do with the condition or price of the home.So before you start seriously looking at homes, decide what you need and what you won’t budge on. You may have a maximum price and commute time, a minimum size or other requirements. Those are your deal breakers. Write them down. Resist the temptation to compromise on deal breakers, even when you feel discouraged. For all else, keep an open mind.Make decisions fastIn today’s market, many homes are on the market for less than a month, so it’s important to make an offer quickly once you find one you like. Let your list of deal breakers be your guide. If a home meets your criteria, including an acceptable price, it may be worth making an offer. Again, quickly, because many sellers field multiple offers within a day or two of listing the home and planting a “for sale” sign in the yard.“Even as a first-time home buyer, they may have to make a quick decision whether or not to buy a home,” Robinson says. To have the offer taken seriously, have a preapproval letter from a lender and make a competitive offer, she adds.Don’t take rejection personallyWhen first-time buyers make offers, “they’re going to get rejected many times,” says Laura Moreno, host of the “First Time Home Buyer Podcast” and founder of a tech startup called HomeFlow that offers an all-in-one homebuying platform.As rejected offers pile up, they take it personally or feel worthless, Moreno says. “What I tell them is just breathe. It’s not a judgment against you.”You might get lucky and have your first offer accepted. But don’t count on it. Realize that for the seller, this is a business decision.Wait before you celebrateYour offer was accepted? Great! Just remember that the home inspection and lender’s appraisal are coming next, and either of them can knock the deal awry. The more excited you get about the seller giving your offer a thumbs-up, the more disappointed you’ll be if you have to give the deal a thumbs-down after the inspection or appraisal.Think about the seller’s needsYou’re focused on your own needs and problems. That’s understandable, but there’s a benefit to thinking about the seller’s needs, too.Jenkins advises making the offer attractive to the seller. That might mean keeping the inspection period short: maybe just three to five days, so the seller can put the home back on the market promptly if you’re dissatisfied with the inspection and decide to move on.Having a preapproval letter from a reputable mortgage lender, paying all of your own closing costs and paying some or all of your agent’s commission are other ways to meet the seller’s needs.Have a backup plan: Don’t buy yetAs fervently as you want to buy a house in 2021, your best option might be to wait until fortune favors you. PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida — Beaches across Florida are about to see a major change. Stretches of sand behind condos, hotels and homes, could soon be off limits to the public. Starting July 1, it will be up to private businesses and homeowners to decide if they want to restrict the public from using their portion of the sand from the high tide water line up. That means the dry sand adjacent to their building could be private, while the wet sand will remain public. It's an idea beachgoer Heather Towns does not agree with. The mom, from Indiana, comes to Redington Shores every year with her family.“I think it’s a beach. I think you should be able to walk wherever you want," she elaborated. “We come here every year for the past 4 years because it’s private.”Yet, come July 1, the sand that Towns and her family often visit behind a 4-story condo building, could be reserved for condominium owners only. Governor Rick Scott recently signed a bill allowing hotels, condos and other property owners to put up signs or even rope off their section of the beach, if they choose. Ron Gonzalez manages the Gulf Mariner Condos on Redington Shores. While he doesn’t agree with roping off the beach, he says protecting private property— which he pays taxes on— is critical.“It’s no different than if they came in and took your own personal backyard on the mainland. It is no different whatsoever," Gonzalez explained.The new law is the first of its kind in the country, and goes against Florida’s long standing "customary use" policy, which states that beaches belong to the public. “It’s everybody’s beach. It’s everybody’s ocean!," beach visitor Dennis Hansen said in disbelief when he learned about the new law. The law also takes away a local city or county’s ability to restrict private beaches. So the next time you pick a perfect spot along the sandy shore, don’t be surprised if a private property owner asks you to move. Craig Towns believes the law is only fair.“If you’re going to make the investment and spend the money and time down here, you deserve your own private space,” he said.His wife, Heather, disagrees, "I kinda like the open feel. I would not be happy to see sections of the beach roped off and be forced into the more crowded public areas.” 2328

  

PASADENA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A float in the Rose Parade unexpectedly caught fire Tuesday morning. Video shows the Chinese American Heritage Foundation’s train float proceeding down its normal route when suddenly smoke begins to appear. Later in the video, the float can be seen stopping, backing up traffic along the route. The Rose Parade’s Twitter account tweeted that the fire was due to “technical difficulties.” One of the 2019 #RoseParade floats is experiencing technical difficulties at Orange Grove and Colorado.
