BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of passengers traveling on China's railway set a new daily record on Oct.1 driven by holiday makers and improved rail transport capacity, railway authorities said Saturday.Daily railway passenger traffic on Friday hit 8.3 million riders, up 19.8 percent year on year and overtaking the daily record of 7.1 million set on May 1 during the Labor Day holiday, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said.Friday's figure also outnumbered the previous day by 1.8 million, the MOR said.Over the past four days more than 24 million people in China chose to travel by train, which is 10.3 percent higher than the figure during the same period last year, said the ministry.Thanks to China's increased transport capacity, stemming partially from high-speed railway construction, railway authorities managed to meet the travel demands of holiday makers, which are dominated by travelers and those who were returning home.China's weeklong National Day holiday begins on Friday.China has 7,055 kilometers of high-speed railway in service, which is the world's longest, said He Huawu, chief engineer of the MOR.By 2012, China will have a railway network of 110,000 kilometers, 13,000 kilometers of which will be high-speed rail, according to the MOR.

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group on Sunday turned down the suggestion by Yahoo chief executive officer Carol Bartz that she be allowed to join the board of Alibaba, replying that Bartz should focus on improving Yahoo's own business first.Wang Shuai, chief marketing officer of Taobao.com under the group, said he has been "perplexed" by Bartz's decisions and attitudes since she became CEO of Yahoo in January 2009, claiming: "They demonstrate a lack of appreciation of the Internet, the mainland market and business partners."In response to Bartz's suggestion that she join the board of Alibaba, Wang said: "Perhaps it would not be a bad idea for her to concentrate her efforts on improving Yahoo's current situation."On Friday, Bartz touted Yahoo's 39 percent investment in Alibaba, a day after the Chinese Internet company said Yahoo had rejected its offer to sell the stake back to the group.The 62-year-old executive said the ideal time for Yahoo to exit from Alibaba will be after Taobao.com and Alipay.com, Alibaba's online shopping and payment subsidiaries, go public. XINING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Northwest China' s Qinghai on Wednesday became the first province to establish a regulation that holds local governments and state-owned enterprises responsible in coping with climate change.Called Qinghai' s Regulations of Coping with Climate Change, issued by the provincial government Wednesday and scheduled to take effect on Oct. 1, the regulations will cover the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which has one of the most fragile ecological systems in the world.Energy savings, emissions reductions, water resource conservation and other works related to climate change will be considered when evaluating senior officials of governments and state-owned enterprises administered by Qinghai, the new regulation stipulates."The regulation is a landmark in China' s creation of a legal framework in curbing climate change as it stresses and specifies local government' s responsibility on climate change," said Wang Zhiqiang, head of the policy and law department of the China Meteorological Administration.Governments administrated by Qinghai should build policies in line with the regulation and support green development, said Li Xiaoyu, deputy head of Qinghai' s legislative office."If officials fail to meet their duties in combating climate change, they are subject to punishments stipulated by the regulation," Li added."The regulation, based on China' s laws, regulations and policies, provides a basis for law enforcement and government agencies to implement climate change policies and punish offenders," Wang said."Qinghai' s temperature has been on the rise, reaching record highs this summer, and the trend is still going up," said Wang Shen, deputy head of Qinghai' s Meteorological Bureau.Statistics show Qinghai' s temperature has been rising by 0.35 centigrade every ten years, compared to the world average of 0.13 centigrade.Some mountain ice caps and frozen soil atop the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are melting, triggering floods, expanding deserts and degrading the ecology.Qinghai is the source of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River, China' s two major rivers.
