Walmart has agreed to buy India's leading online retailer Flipkart, paying billion for a controlling stake of 77%.Flipkart gives Walmart access to a market it has been trying to crack for years. Foreign investment regulations have thus far prevented the Arkansas-based retailer from opening stores in India, restricting it to operating 21 wholesale distribution outlets."India is one of the most attractive retail markets in the world, given its size and growth rate, and our investment is an opportunity to partner with the company that is leading transformation of e-commerce in the market," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. The deal is subject to regulatory approval.SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, whose company is one of Flipkart's biggest investors, let news of the deal slip earlier on Wednesday while presenting his company's earnings.SoftBank invested .5 billion in the Bangalore-based company last year. Son said that the sale to Walmart valued SoftBank's stake at billion. Many of Flipkart's other investors will retain stakes in the company, including co-founder Binny Bansal, Chinese tech giant Tencent and Microsoft, Walmart said in a statement. Walmart's interest in investing in the Bangalore-based firm was first reported in 2016, and a deal boosts its firepower in a battle with Amazon in the world's fastest growing major economy.Amazon has long considered India one of its most important overseas markets.Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has committed to investing at least billion in his company's India business, saying in 2016 that he saw "huge potential" in the country. Amazon has introduced its Prime video and music services in India in its effort to challenge Flipkart, as well as its annual Prime Day blockbuster sale.Flipkart now has an even bigger war chest to fend off Amazon in an e-commerce market that Morgan Stanley estimates will be worth 0 billion by 2026. The Indian firm could also speed up its expansion into groceries, an area that has already pitted Amazon against Walmart in the United States.Amazon may have been trying to spoil Walmart's plans until the very last minute. Indian media reported in early May that it made a counteroffer to buy Flipkart.  2223

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - As COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc on nearly all facets of life – your emergency fund is more important than ever."The industry standard is three to six months of living expenses in some kind of reserve," said Phil Maliniak, Financial Advisor with Wealth Avenue in Virginia Beach.Maliniak says putting together a nest egg is easy."It starts with understanding what you are doing each month a clear vision of where does my money go," he said.He says to start by paying yourself first – then run down a list of all your monthly expenses – and see what surplus is left."Make a checklist of each month, where does it all go, and how do I get my hands on the difference," he stated. To build a surplus, Maliniak says look at things you can ditch. Daily cups of coffee, donuts, streaming services, online shopping, etc. He says then look for incentives."There are little tricks bank accounts and credit card companies have come out with as they pay you every time you buy something or there are cashback options," he said.Another tip, since the virus is limiting what we all can do – stash away the extra income you would have used to go to restaurants, movie theaters, bars, concerts, or sporting events. He says also considers refinancing your loans since the Federal Reserve has slashed interest rates."If you create a reserve, you can create your own bank, and then you can borrow from your bank anytime and determine your own rates," he said. This story was first reported by Chelsea Donovan at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 1550

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General William Barr defended the aggressive federal law enforcement response to civil unrest in America as he testified for the first time before the House Judiciary Committee. He pushed back against angry, skeptical Democrats who said President Donald Trump’s administration is unconstitutionally suppressing dissent. The hearing, held Tuesday as the late civil rights icon John Lewis laid in state steps away in the Capitol rotunda, highlighted the wide election-year gulf between the two parties on police brutality and systemic racism in law enforcement, which Barr argued does not exist. Massive protests have sparked unrest across the nation following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police and calls for reform have grown louder.Tuesday's hearing is part of a series of hearings in which Democrats on the committee are holding to investigate what they say has become a politicized department. In his opening statements, Barr referred to an investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign's ties to Russia as "bogus" and asserted that he acts independently of President Donald Trump and his administration. He also addressed ongoing protests across the country and the Trump administration's use of federal agents to restore peace. Barr referred to protesters as "anarchists" and "violent rioters" have "hijacked" peaceful movements following the death of George Floyd.Barr did refer to Floyd's death as "horrible" and added that the incident "understandably jarred the whole country and forced us to reflect on longstanding issues in our nation."When pressed by Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-New York, on the deployment of federal agents to cities like Portland, Barr said that he's made it clear that he would like to "pick the cities" where agents are sent, "based on law enforcement need." Many of the agents that have been deployed are part of the Department of Homeland Security.Later, Barr was pressed by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas on the current state of policing in America. During the questioning he said he does not believe there is widespread systemic racism with law enforcement entities in the country. He also said he is against the removal of qualified immunity, a statute that protects law enforcement agents from prosecution in some use of force cases. Democrats pressed Barr on his handling of the Mueller report and the Department's intervention in legal cases against two Trump allies: Roger Stone and Michael Flynn. In Stone's case, the Department of Justice backtracked on an initial sentencing recommendation of between seven and nine years in prison for lying to Congress. The department later recommended a lesser sentence, prompting all DOJ lawyers assigned to Stone's case to resign. Trump later commuted Stone's sentence.Democrats repeatedly pressed Barr on his Department's decision to rescind its initial sentencing recommendations as favoritism and cronyism. Barr defended the move by saying that he did not feel that Stone, a 67-year-old man with no prior convictions, deserved to go to prison for seven years. In the Flynn case, the Department of Justice dropped charges against Trump's national security adviser for lying to the FBI earlier this year — three years after Flynn pleaded guilty to the charges and then later tried to withdraw his plea.In early June, Barr was among a group of Trump administration officials who appeared in a photo in front of St. John's Episcopal Church in Washington with the president — a photo that required the forceful dispersal of thousands of peaceful protesters at Lafayette Park near the White House.Tuesday's hearing was delayed for about an hour after committee chairman Jerry Nadler was involved in a car accident on his way to Capitol Hill. According to CNN and Politico, Nadler was not hurt but was late in reaching the Capitol. 3866

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of demonstrators gathered around the White House for a “noise demonstration and dance party” to try to drown out President Donald Trump’s speech accepting the Republican presidential nomination. Later, a crowd enveloped U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky as he left the convention and demanded that he acknowledge police shooting victim Breonna Taylor. The crowd surrounded Paul as he returned to his hotel in Washington after attending Trump's address at the White House. Video shared on social media shows some protesters shoving police officers escorting Paul as others yell at him to "say her name."Warning: The video below contains explicit language. 682

WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time in Marine Corps history, women are attending a previously male-only combat training course in California.Marine Capt. Joshua Pena said 40 female Marine students checked-in Tuesday to the Marine Combat Training Battalion at Camp Pendleton. The move comes at least seven months after senior Marine leaders said they were considering the change, amid criticism that much of the early training excludes women. The entry-level course is for Marines who've finished boot camp and aren't assigned to infantry jobs. It lasts about a month and involves basic combat training, including patrol and convoy operations, marksmanship and the use of grenade launchers and machine guns.Pena said the female Marines will be fully integrated with the men, and that their inclusion triggered no changes to the course instruction. He said that eventually as many as 1,700 women would go through the combat training there each year.Currently Marine boot camp on the West Coast is only for male recruits. Women attend boot camp at Parris Island in South Carolina, where they are separated from the men for portions of the training. Congress members have been critical of that policy, and the Corps has been reviewing it.Until now, half of the Marine Corps' male recruits would go through their initial training on the West Coast where they had no female colleagues. A key reason for the limits is the shortage of female recruits. Women make up just 8.7 percent of the Corps. But Marine leaders have been eyeing changes with the belief that giving the men greater exposure to women recruits during training could foster better relations and greater respect over time. 1686
