Former Sen. Bob Dole was helped out of his wheelchair Tuesday to salute former President George H.W. Bush as he laid in state at the Capitol Rotunda.Dole, 95, once faced Bush during the 1988 Republican primary fight for the presidential nomination but nonetheless maintained a decades-old friendship with the former president. On Saturday, he reflected on their relationship, telling CNN's Ana Cabrera that his passing was an end of an era, as Bush was the last World War II veteran to serve as president."I believe there are certain qualities that veterans have, and when Bush was president, I think about three-fourths of Congress were veterans and we would stick together and work together across the aisle. And President Bush was a bipartisan president. So we got quite a lot done," Dole said. 804

For one Tennessee Spanish teacher, what began as free money for qualified students on the path to a career in education has turned into a two-year nightmare.“It has been wearing on me emotionally and mentally,” Kaitlyn McCollum said. In 2009, as a senior in high school, McCollum applied for and received the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant Program, also known as the TEACH grant. It paid for her undergraduate college. In exchange, McCollum agreed to teach a high-need subject for four years at a low income school, which she's been doing since graduating from Middle Tennessee State University in 2013. “The very basis of the TEACH grant is to promote teachers joining the field,” McCollum said. However, in 2016 that free money disappeared.“It was a huge slap in the face, huge slap in the face,” she said.  McCollum sent paperwork to Fedloan, the company that oversees the grant, on July 29, 2016. The deadline was July 31. She admits the paperwork might've gotten there a day or two late, but the next letter she received in August wasn't what she expected.“In a one line, very cold sentence, says ‘your grants have now been converted to loans, period,’” McCollum said. She now owes the ,000 she was given in grant money plus the accrued interest. “It was this instant overnight debt of ,000,” she said. McCollum immediately appealed, but was denied. She's contacted state leaders in Tennessee and spent the last two years going back and forth with Fedloan about the paperwork issue. She said they're missing the bigger picture.“If I’m saddled with ,000 plus accruing more interest, am I going to stay in education? Maybe not,” McCollum said. McCollum has learned since 2016 that thousands of teachers across the country are in the same boat. While the Attorney General's Office in Massachusetts has opened a case, she hopes her story will be seen and heard by the right people here in Tennessee.  2069

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - Residents in a Fort Pierce community on Hutchinson Island had a special surprise for Joseph Malizia. They gave the 22-year-old man with special needs a box full of flags Thursday to replace the ones that had been stolen from him recently."I love it. I love that they care about me," Malizia said when looked at the flags from all over the world packed in the box."The community wanted to show Joseph there are more good people," Heather Thomson said.Neighbors in the Mariner Bay community said they often see Malizia waving different flags at the beach and along State Road A1A and in the neighborhood. His father said Malizia took a liking to flags as a child while attending his brother and sister's surfing tournaments. WPTV "Every event they have a big parade, lots of flags, all the nations, kind of like a mini Olympics, and Joseph would partake in the flag carrying," David Malizia said.Joseph Malizia was now planning how to display his new flags, which made his neighbors smile."What better time to have a feel-good moment than during everything going on right now," Thomson said. This story was first reported by Matt Sczesny at WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. 1227

For pets, the skies of United Airlines lately have not been so friendly. It's not just the French bulldog that died on a Houston-to-New York flight Monday after a United flight attendant told its owners to put the dog in an overhead bin.Data from the US Department of Transportation show that three times as many animals died on United flights last year than on all the other US carriers put together. As you can see from this chart, 2017 wasn't an exception.United has had the highest rate of pet deaths of any US airline for the past three years. In fairness, the airline in recent years has also been the largest transporter of animals -- mostly dogs and cats, but also more exotic pets such as birds and geckos. Also, according to the DOT report for 2017, several of the animals had pre-existing health issues such as heart disease. (The report did not specify how many animals were flown in the cargo hold as opposed to the plane's cabin.)But even when accounting for their larger volume of animal passengers, United still leads all other airlines in rate of deaths per 10,000 pets.United did not respond to multiple requests for comment for this story. But spokesman Charlie Hobart told CNN on Tuesday that the airline is investigating the French bulldog's death "to prevent this from ever happening again."As for the 2017 report, he said, "The overwhelming majority of the incidents were attributed to animals not being acclimated to its crate or the animal having a pre-existing condition we weren't aware of. Any time there is an incident with animals we do a thorough review." 1612
