SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported a record 1,546 COVID-19 infections today, the 14th consecutive day that more than 600 new cases were reported, along with 16 additional deaths.The county's coronavirus death toll now stands at 984, and the cumulative case total rose to 74,361.The previous one-day case record was last Saturday, when 1,478 new COVID-19 cases were logged, topping the previous record of 1,091 set Friday. On Sunday, 939 new cases were reported.San Diego County fell deeper into the most restrictive purple tier of the state's four-tiered reopening plan Tuesday with an unadjusted 21.5 new COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council members Monica Montgomery and Georgette Gomez called on state officials Monday to open an independent investigation into the in-custody death of 24-year-old Aleah Jenkins. Montgomery and Gomez requested the inquiry in a joint statement in response to a news conference last Friday from District Attorney Summer Stephan in which she released body-camera video of Jenkins' time in police custody and said that Jenkins' death was caused by a lack of judgment rather than criminal negligence. The two officials called on the state's Department of Justice and Attorney General Xavier Becerra to open an investigation into the circumstances of Jenkins' death. Montgomery and Gomez also urged the San Diego Police Department to reform its policies regarding the treatment of people in custody. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Board of Supervisors today extended a state of emergency over a hepatitis A outbreak in San Diego County that has killed 20 people, amid a declining number of new cases.Health officials told the supervisors at a special meeting that the drop in case numbers is a sign that efforts to fight the outbreak are working.RELATED: Governor Jerry Brown declares state of emergency over Hepatitis A outbreakThey stressed the need for the county to continue vaccination, prevention and educational efforts that have been put in place since the emergency was declared in September. There were 31 confirmed cases of hepatitis A last month, compared to a peak of 94 cases in August.There have been 544 cases as of Monday in the nearly year-old outbreak, an increase of 28 cases since data was last released on Oct. 24, according to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer.She said some of those 28 cases include ones from as long ago as April that were newly confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Due to the disease's long incubation period, there could potentially be more confirmed cases from October. Wooten said the initial decline is a good sign, but not a reason to declare victory."We could potentially have a second peak," she said. "That's why it's very important for us to continue our vaccination efforts."In San Diego, nearly two-thirds of the victims have been either homeless, users of illicit drugs or both. Much of the county's efforts have focused on those populations, but Wooten said an outbreak in Michigan that has affected men who have sex with men underscores the importance of targeting that community here.Local efforts include holding vaccination events at LGBT centers and distributing educational information to clinics that serve that community, she said.
