(KGTV) - A North County mom is giving thanks as she searches for the "roadside angels" who came to her family's side after a car crash.Aleisha Sargent was behind the wheel with her two kids — 10-year-old Calli and her 7-year-old brother Tyson — in the middle row of the van last Thursday. They stopped at the intersection of Ridge Road and Lake Blvd. when Sargent says her light turned green, a car ran a red light and broadsided her."Just taking my two youngest children to school around 7:30 that morning," said Sargent. "Spun in the middle of the intersection, almost 180 degrees ... My glasses flew off. Couldn't see my kids, which was scary. Calli was asking what was happening. Tyson was saying his head hurt," said Sargent.As they sat in the van, a woman appeared next to them."She asked if we were okay, opened the door and helped me and my children to the side of the road, where we sat on the sidewalk. She called 911 ... She said she was an off-duty nurse and proceeded to check out the children."They were shaking and scared," said Sargent.Both women reassured them and wrapped them in blankets, before they eventually left. Sargent was able to say thank you to the off-duty nurse, but it was quick."I was able to sit there and hold my children as they calmed down. It's an outcome Sargent says was made possible by the women she calls her "roadside angels." One soldier has been killed and seven others have been injured after an explosion occurred during a training exercise at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.WTVD-TV reports that the explosion occurred when a vehicle rolled over. Reports originally indicated that as many as 15 soldiers had been injured.WTVD reported that Staff Sgt. Alexander P. Dalida, 32, of Dunstable, Massachusetts, died during a training exercise. According to to WRAL-TV, the soldiers were transported to a local hospital via medical helicopter. All the solider were part of the Army Special Operations Command, or USASOC."There was an incident that occurred on one of the ranges," Lt. Col. (KGTV) --  A swarm of earthquakes is once again shaking the Ocotillo Wells area Sunday.The largest earthquakes to hit the area Sunday morning was a 3.5 magnitude 14 miles away from Ocotillo Wells at 4:05 a.m. That earthquake was followed by a 3.3 magnitude at 6:33 a.m. At this time, there are no reports of damage or injury. RELATED: Series of earthquakes shake Ocotillo Wells area  The eruption of small earthquakes began Saturday evening between 5 and 6 p.m. The largest of Saturday's quakes registered as a 3.5 magnitude.  587

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -  A group called "Take Back Oceanside" with some 300 members strong is vowing the clean up the filth and violence they say has crept into their neighborhood along the San Luis Rey riverbed.Organizer Drew Andrioff says the crime is out of control."We believe other coastal communities are giving the transients bus and train tickets here, and the city is limited in what they can do. It's gotten so bad no one wants to take their kids out. Police don't come down here after dark because the camps have traps....trip wires and sharp bamboo," said Andrioff.Police estimate nearly 500 homeless people are living along the riverbank.  The Oceanside Police Department has made over 1,000 arrests in that area since the first of the year.Lifelong Oceanside resident Donna McGinty says the crime is seeping into the city."Every atrocity imaginable is happening down there.  Prostitution is rampant.  The transient groups have their own little government down there and it's well organized," she said.Pictures taken by the neighborhood group show used needles, hundreds of shopping carts, heaping trash, a machete, and a polluted river. The group plans to attend the Oceanside City Council meeting on October 17 to ask for help. 1283

Now more than ever, the impact of not having enough minority schoolteachers is part of the conversation, with efforts focused on undoing systemic disparities.“For so long, I think people have been uncomfortable having discussions about race and how that influences not only students but teachers in a school setting, where you are learning about what society is supposed to look like,” said Eric Duncan, Senior Data and Policy Analyst at The Education Trust.Duncan is part of The Education Trust’s Education Diversity Team, a group that advocates for higher achievement of all students, particularly those of color or living in poverty.Research in Sage Journals found minority students have more favorable perceptions of minority teachers, which can translate to better academic outcomes. Yet, teachers of color make up just 20% of the workforce. Close to 40% of all schools don't have a single teacher of color.Meanwhile, racial and ethnic minority students now make up a majority of the public-school population.Schools have made gains recently hiring more teachers of color, but retention is an issue because they leave the workforce at a higher rate than white teachers. The Education Trust found that's in part due to working conditions.Minority teachers often take on additional roles outside of teaching that they are not paid or even recognized for.School culture is another significant factor.“Discipline policies that educators of color are frankly tired of seeing and our country is tired of seeing the way that students are over disciplined, are misunderstood, particularly students of color, are driven out of school, are suspended for minor misconducts,” said Duncan.The Education Trust has recommendations on how schools can retain teachers of color, starting with collecting data by race and ethnicity on recruitment, hiring and retention. And also, providing scholarships, loan forgiveness or repayment, and relocation incentives.The group also suggests developing leaders that promote positive working conditions for a diverse workforce, and ensuring curriculum, learning and work environments are inclusive of all racial ethnic groups. 2162
