When a rumor of a mass shooting trickled out late Wednesday evening, play director Brett Elliott was putting the finishing touches on a student production.“Immediately people started panicking and crying, not knowing who to reach out to first because all of their friends could have been there,” Elliott describes.Elliott was set to direct a play about the Columbine High School shooting with student actors at California Lutheran University. The play “Columbinus” was based on the events that took place in the 1999 shooting in Columbine, Colorado.“I was sitting right over here to your right, giving final notes and instructions to my actors, literally on how to effectively portray people affected by a mass shooting, Elliott says.“We thought it was vital three days ago. We thought it was immediate three days ago. Now, it’s on our doorstep.”One of his cast members did, in fact, lose a best friend.“I've spent a month and half with these kids, trying to teach them what it could be like to experience an event like this, try to help them get into the minds of people, of a community affected by an event like this,” Elliott says. “I would never in a million years have wished for them to actually live it. It’s heartbreaking.”This weekend's opening performances have been canceled. The future of the production is unclear. However, Elliott and the cast unanimously agree that it should go on."It is exponentially more important to us all now," Elliott says.Whether the play will go on is up to the university. But if theatre's job is to hold a mirror up to nature, to society, Elliott believes the show must go on, especially now.“This show is why we do theatre,” Elliott says. “This show is why theatre exists.” 1724

With five months to go until the November election, a unique group of voters could play a pivotal rule in deciding the next president: felons. THE ISSUEA Florida judge recently ruled felons, who have left prison, should not be required to pay fines before they are allowed to vote. Last year, Florida's governor signed a law making it a requirement to vote again. The judge referred to it as a “pay-to-vote system."Florida's governor is appealing the ruling. The issue of what voting rights felons have varies across the country and depends on where the felon resides. Some states, like Maine, allow felons to vote while incarcerated. In the majority of states, felons are automatically allowed to vote after they leave prison. In Iowa, felons aren't allowed to vote at all. Meanwhile in Virginia, their constitution bans felons from voting, but the governor has been using his authority to allow nonviolent felons to vote if they fill out a form.IMPACT ON ELECTIONIt's estimated there are around 1 million potential Florida voters impacted by the legal ruling. Given Florida's swing state status, that is a lot of new voters potentially up for grabs. Florida has 29 electoral college votes. President Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton by just 112,000 votes in 2016. While the ruling is being appealed, it's unclear if it will be taken up by the Supreme Court before November's election. "I think there is certainly a movement to give people second chances, to let them rejoin the electorate," Julie Ebenstein, an ACLU lawyer who helped argue the case, said. Ebenstein believes this could impact other states in encouraging legal challenges. While Democratic leaders, for the most part, have taken steps to allow more felons to vote in recent years, it is unclear if it helps their party when it comes to elections. A Vox study found felons participate in elections at low rates and traditionally do not favor one party or another in large numbers. FELONS REACT"It's about 50-50 down the line inside," said Barbara Barrick, a Virginia felon, about the political affiliation of those who have served time. Barrick is following the Florida case because she believes felons should be treated equally regardless of the state in which they live. Barrick received her voting rights back in 2018 after the governor of Virginia issued a special order. "When I voted for the first time last November, I felt so real. I put my little sticker on. I was prancing around. I actually cried," Barrick said. 2501

WESTLAKE VILLAGE (CNS) - Westlake Village-based Guitar Center, the country's largest retailer of instruments and musical equipment, joined a growing list of companies impacted by the economic toll of the COVID-19 pandemic, filing for bankruptcy, according to a report Sunday.Guitar Center has about 300 stores across the U.S., and its sister brands include Music & Arts, which has more than 200 stores specializing in band and orchestral instruments for sale and rent, according to the Los Angeles Times. The filing in the Eastern District of Virginia gives the company a break on its debts by letting it stay in business as it seeks to carry out a restructuring plan, the Times reported.According to the report, a restructuring support agreement announced Nov. 13 requires new financing backed by existing creditors, in addition to 5 million in new equity investments from its parent company, Ares Management Corp., as well as the Carlyle Group and Brigade Capital Management.Moody's Investor Service explained that the coronavirus shutdown has hit nonessential retailers hard, and that Guitar Center was particularly vulnerable because musical instruments are highly discretionary item. The company's stores were shut down in mid-March when the pandemic began in earnest. Since then, the Times reported, it has reopened some locations while maintaining online operations.Guitar Center claims it has liabilities of between billion and billion, with a similar range for its assets, according to the filing.According to the report, Ares acquired the company in 2014 in an out-of-court restructuring of Guitar Center's substantial debt load, the result of a deal by Bain Capital LP in 2007 to take it private. 1728

While we don’t know yet what the impact of the storm will be for our local teams, the safety of our employees and drivers is always our top priority. We have begun proactively closing operations facilities temporarily in the potential impacted areas. We will pay Amazon employees 100 percent of regular time if their facility temporarily closes and are prepared to provide support for them and their families so they can recover from this storm. Customers living in areas affected by the hurricane may see a delayed delivery promise date on items when they go to checkout. In limited circumstances, customers outside the impacted area may also see a slower delivery promise if the product they are ordering is shipping from an area within the projected path of the hurricane. Right now, our Disaster Relief by Amazon team is closely monitoring Hurricane Dorian and is working to prepare and provide support alongside our nonprofit partners to communities potentially impacted. 984
