It's National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and there's a new push to keep roads safer. In Tennessee, the state with the highest levels of distracted-driving deaths in the country, police have taken a unique approach to catching distracted drivers. Officers are riding on city buses and watching drivers around them, catching ones on their phones and then calling for backup to pull them over. "This is distracted driving week throughout the United States, and so this week, we're spending time working on our roadways to bring attention to our drivers about this type of behavior that we're trying to stop," explains Steve Dillard with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office. In California, drivers can be issued a ticket for just holding your phone behind the wheel, even at a traffic stop. Now, the National Transportation Safety Board is pushing the state to take it a step further and become the first to ban hands-free calls, saying it can still cause drivers to be distracted. An instructor with the MasterDrive driving school in Denver, Colorado says hands-free technology still takes the driver’s focus away from driving their vehicle. “While you're looking at your screens and trying to figure out which button to push, the cars in motion,” the instructor says. “The car is not being driven by you at that point, and at any point, things could happen.”Distracted driving claimed more than 3,000 lives in 2017 alone. 1495

Italian restaurant chain Olive Garden is denying that it has made contributions to President Donald Trump's campaign as thousands have called for a boycott of Olive Garden. It all started over the weekend after a now-deleted tweet claimed Olive Garden has contributed to Trump's campaign. After the tweet went viral, thousands on Twitter and Facebook used the hashtag #BoycottOliveGarden to spread the word. On Monday, Olive Garden fired back on its Twitter account. "We don’t know where this information came from, but it is incorrect," Olive Garden tweeted. "Our company does not donate to presidential candidates."According to the Federal Election Commission, it appears the accusations that Olive Garden and its parent company Darden supported Trump were false. Corporations are forbidden in directly contributing to elections, according to FEC guidelines.Previously, Darden operated a Political Action Committee that many top executives contributed to. According to government filings, the Darden Restaurants, Inc. Employees Good Government Fund PAC made significant contributions to a number of Republican and Democrat leaders. In the 2013-14 election cycle, the fund made contributions to both the Democratic and Republican House and Senate election committees. At the end of 2015, Darden announced it was ending the PAC.Although Darden and Olive Garden cannot make contributions directly, many top executives for Darden have made individual political contributions. According to FEC filings, only one of the 19 Darden executives listed on its website made a contribution to a presidential campaign since 2015. Susan Connelly, a Darden Senior VP, contributed ,700 to Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign ((,000 to Hillary Victory Fund, ,700 to Hillary for America)). It was a rare disagreement between a teenager and his mother that was shared in front of Congress and the public in a hearing Tuesday. “With my mother, it wasn't she didn't have the information, she was manipulated into believing it,” high school senior Ethan Lindenberger said in the hearing. Lindenberger told senators how he grew up believing vaccines were harmful and how his mother would not allow him to get vaccinated.“As I approached high school and began to critically think for myself, I saw the information in defense of vaccines outweighed the concerns heavily,” he said. When Lindenberger turned 18 a few months ago, he defied his mother and got vaccinated. A U.S. Senate committee invited him to share his story during a hearing that discussed what's driving outbreaks in parts of the country, mostly blaming it on those who don't get vaccinated. Doctors and Congress spent the hearing talking about the importance of vaccines, especially among children. An overwhelming majority of parents vaccinate their children. However, polls have shown public support of vaccine has fallen and according to the CDC, the number of children under 2 who have not received any vaccinations has quadrupled in the past 17 years. “I used to work in the pharmaceutical industry. This is why I question vaccines,” says mother Brandy Vaughn, who has chosen not to vaccinate her son. Vaughn criticized Tuesday’s hearing, saying those who question vaccines did not get a seat at the table. “We tried to put them on the witness list, and there's no room for anyone that has anything negative to say about vaccines. Yet, an 18-year-old teenager, without absolutely no background in any kind of science or vaccines, can testify in the hearing? It's outrageous,” Vaughn says.Doctors today blamed social media, in part, for spreading false information about vaccines and encouraged concerned parents to turn to pediatricians, not the internet. 1942
