FUZHOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Zhou Yongkang, while on an inspection tour, has urged officials in the coastal province of Fujian in southeast China to pursue leapfrog economic development.Fujian should make full use of the opportunity for development and put in place the next five-year development plan based upon its real conditions to significantly improve the people's standards of living, said Zhou, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.He further said the province should increase its economic and cultural exchanges with Taiwan.Zhou also told officials to divert more government spending and public services to impoverished areas and low-income residents to boost the development of the old revolutionary base areas, as well as the western and northern areas in Fujian.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Participants at a human rights forum in Beijing have paid tribute to China's treatment of human rights issues."We have a different culture. The Chinese have a different culture. We would appreciate the situation where human rights are dealt with within their own cultural contexts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol, a Norwegian participant on a panel discussion at the forum, said Wednesday.The panel discussion was a part of the two-day Beijing Forum on Human Rights that started Tuesday. The forum attracted about 80 officials, scholars and experts from more than 25 countries, regions and international organizations.China's human rights situation was one of the focal points at the forum."It is highly important to reflect and discuss the key issues of human rights worldwide. People now can come and see how China develops. Ignorance and lack of information were the root causes for many conflicts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol added.Jiang Guoqing, a professor from China Foreign Affairs University, said on the same panel discussion that since reform and opening up was initiated in 1978, China has made great progress in both human rights and modernization.He Ying, vice president of Heilongjiang University, said, "The West often criticizes China for not progressing fast. It also criticizes China for its recognition of individuals' rights. But I think the West needs to recognize China as a developing country that is moving in the right direction in many fields."

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan has vowed to enhance trade cooperation with the U.S. state of Washington.He told visiting Washington Governor Christine Gregoire in Beijing Thursday that China was ready to boost friendly ties with Washington State, and deepen cooperation in trade and investment to increase mutual understanding and trust.Wang said a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship was in the fundamental interests of both peoples. BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with its neighboring countries to further deepen their mutual understanding and friendship, a senior Chinese diplomat said Thursday.Hu Zhengyue, Chinese assistant foreign minister, said China supports social and cultural exchanges between different countries on the basis of respecting each other's tradition, social system and developing mode.The recent years have seen dynamic exchanges between China and its neighboring countries and their cooperation has been broadened and enriched, Hu said in a Foreign Ministry media release."In 2009 alone, there are about 21.7 million visitors coming from northeast, southeast and south Asian countries," he said."Besides, more than 160,000 foreign students studying in China in 2009 were from Asian countries," he added.China attaches great importance to enhancing communication and exchanges between young people of Asian countries, and has established young people's regular exchanging mechanism with Japan, India, Vietnam, Mongolia and Pakistan, he said.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Floods, landslides and heavy downpours brought by typhoon Fanapi had claimed 55 lives in south China's Guangdong Province, while another 42 were still missing, local authorities said Thursday.Meanwhile, more than 1.26 million people were affected and 98,000 in low-lying areas were forced to be evacuated, a spokesman with the provincial civil affairs department said.Rainstorms and and geological disasters had destroyed more than 4,200 homes and inundated more than 48,700 hectares of cropland, the spokesman said.Direct economic losses were estimated at more than 2 billion yuan (300 million U.S. dollars), he said.Tonnes of relief supplies, such as tents, clothes, quilts, bottled water and rice, have been dispatched to the disaster-hit areas.Helicopters were used Thursday to airdrop relief materials to victims.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.
