BUFFALO, N.Y. — Social workers could soon work alongside police officers in the Buffalo Police Department. Captain Jeff Rinaldo with the Buffalo Police Department said Monday that officers in Buffalo have been undergoing crisis intervention training for several years. He said officers are learning techniques to help handle situations with people in crisis, including mental health, substance abuse and homelessness. Buffalo police are working on an "initiative to embed licensed clinical social workers" who would work alongside police and help respond to crisis calls, according to paperwork submitted to the Buffalo Common Council. "The goal now is to create a specialized unit called the Behavioral Health Team within the police department," Rinaldo said. Endeavor Health Services is the company named in the proposed contract. BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) - A man who police say was run over with a lawn mower while trying to kill his son with a chainsaw has had to have his leg amputated.The Bristol Herald Courier reports that a warrant for 76-year-old Douglas Ferguson couldn't be served until Tuesday because of the severity of his injuries.According to a Sullivan County Sheriff's Office release, officers called to a home June 28 found Ferguson bleeding from his leg and head. A preliminary investigation indicated he had tried to attack his son with a running chainsaw while he son mowed the yard.Detectives say the father and son had an ongoing feud.Ferguson is charged with attempted second-degree murder and violating probation. It's unclear whether he has a lawyer to comment on his behalf. 773

BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) - California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a wrong-way crash on the Eastbound lanes of Highway 54 near the 125. The crash happened just after 8 p.m. Friday and reduced traffic to one lane. All lanes reopened shortly before 11 p.m. CHP believes the driver of a red Toyota Corolla was driving the wrong way and crashed into a white BMW carrying a mother and two children. Brittany Littleton started “Little Luv Rescue” straight out of high school, taking in abused and neglected animals.“Animals are my favorite part of life, I would say,” Littleton says. “They’re just like pure, innocent beings.”When the wildfires hit southern California, Littleton didn’t hesitate to do what she does best: rescue animals. As everyone else was fleeing, Littleton drove into a fire evacuation zone to rescue livestock.“The fire came to the top of the hill, and it was like you could feel the heat from hundreds of feet away,” Littleton recalls.Littleton and other volunteers herded sheep, goats, horses, and even turtles, into their vehicles. But they realized they had nowhere to put them.Then, Cesar Millan, popularly known as “The Dog Whisperer,” stepped up to help.“I was raised on a farm, so I’m a farm boy. I had a pack of dogs and pigs and chickens, so to me, this is normal,” Millan says.Millan took in and tended to the rescued livestock. Many of them needed more care than others, like one llama saved from the wildfires.“So now, the little baby maggots are coming out,” Millan says, while tending to the llama.The animal was malnourished and had an infection. In a way, the wildfire evacuation may have been a blessing in disguise.“In her case, it actually saved her life completely,” he says. “Medically, emotionally, spiritually, everything. We were not counting on looking at this.”An extreme case like that one only underscores why Littleton fell in love with rescues in the first place.“I think everyone has that sense of like wanting to protect the innocent and animals are the innocent, and they can’t get themselves out and we have them,” Littleton says. “And people have purchased them or bred them or whatever, rescued them, and now have put them in a situation where they rely on us, so we can’t turn our backs on them. We have to get them out to safety because we are the ones who are responsible for that.” 1957
