2020 has proven to be a year to remember and museums want to make sure future generations will be able to see what we're living through right now.If you think about what you've seen and read about history, it's stories, often told through artifacts. At the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, research is always happening. In fact, Aaron Bryant, the museum's curator, says he's like the historical version of a news reporter.“We’re very much committed to, at our museum, committed to being a conduit for voices and we just provide a platform for people to share their stories,” said Bryant.And these days, there are so many stories to tell, as we watch history unfold before our eyes.“Our museum isn’t just about the past, it’s about the present moment and looking towards the future,” he said. “How does history help to inform where we are and where we hope to be for generations to come?”Bryant describes the museum as amazing. He and this team take pride in their ability to tell the American story through an African American lens.Right now, a lot of their artifact collection is happening in real time. That means they're having discussions with demonstrators, building relationships so they can collect and store memories and items.“A conversation with someone or a group of people and at the moment they decide to give something to you because they want it to be remembered and want their stories told,” said Bryant.They want people to be able to relate and connect to what they're collecting. And that means thinking about the ways in which people communicate.“How do we collect cell phone photographs as well as videos of people who are participating in demonstrations or are a part of some transformative event, how do we do that digitally?”That means they need to think about the technological format. What they feature in their museum and in their collections must last through the next 100 to 200 years.“Think about a document maybe 10 to 20 years ago. Would you be able to access that document today, floppy disks for example, so if we collect digitally what’s the best way to archive what would be an artifact and how would people access it in the future,” said Bryant.On their website, the museum states it is interested in gathering things related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the quarantine, the social protest movement for police reform and social justice. That could be something like a face mask that says, "I can't breathe," protest signs, and art.Bryant says, “I think some of the boards covering businesses and have murals painted by artists are really interesting because that speaks both to COVID. Businesses are closed because of COVID and then the artists come in and paint messages as well as other folks coming in and posting signs.”And he says, he wants an actual picture of the physical item for context.“Were people surrounding this artifact? Was it a place that folks congregated? Was it like the North Star of some of the demonstrations that attracted people to that site?”In the museum's collection, for example, there are placards carried at Black Lives Matter protests in Washington D.C. in 2014, the demonstrations for Michael Brown Junior, Eric Garner and Tamir Rice. There are also shoes, worn to a protest in Ferguson, Missouri.“One of the reasons we collect these objects is to preserve the memory and the human experience behind the artifact, why is the artifact important, what it represents, the humanity and human story behind the object.”If you have a story to tell, museums everywhere want to hear from you. “Caught on camera” moments are fun to watch.  They can also be important evidence when they show people breaking the law.Radius Security in Vancouver, Canada, has developed new technology to help police catch suspected criminals in the act."Every single night we are getting one or two apprehensions on one of our sites across the country," said Joel Luyt, a site security specialist with Radius Security.“We have 15 computers inside our unit,” said Luyt.  Radius Security’s cameras use those computers to scan for humans.  The technology disregards other things that might move, like tree branches, animals and rain, that would normally set off a false alarm."So they're looking for oscillating arms. They're looking for head movement, torso and they're deciphering, 'is that a human?'"  said Luyt.By reducing the number of false alarms, more officers are available to respond to an actual crime.Car dealerships and construction companies hire Radius Security to keep watch for burglars, who can make off with expensive spools of wire or copper tubing worth thousands of dollars.Bernie Godler runs Performance Construction and says the new technology has proven more reliable and cut down on false alarms."A full-time manned security gets very expensive. It seems that you know, having a full-time manned security would actually be better but it isn't because we're finding that we get guards that end up falling asleep on the job site. We actually had one job where the manned security was in cahoots with the people who were stealing the stuff off the job site," said Godler.A study said false alarms cost the U.S. nearly billion dollars.  94 percent of alarms turned out to be false, tying up valuable police time when there is no burglar.Radius says it helps police capture the bad guy, like one man who hid in a porta potty, about 60 percent of the time. This technology also lets the security company route a live feed from the security camera to law enforcement's cars."They can punch in a four-digit code into their vehicle while they're driving to the site and they can see live what our monitoring station is seeing so they'll know where the criminal is on the site and they'll see what he is doing live on video and get there in an even faster time.,” said Luyt.Right now, this technology runs upwards of ,000 a year, which is too expensive for many.  But, Luyt expects that eventually, the computer system will get smaller and be more cost-effective to keep your home safe.The company plans to expand this year to the United States, both in San Francisco and Chicago. 2639

(KGTV) — The addition of a "notorious" galactic cantina will bring not only smugglers and bounty hunters to Disneyland in 2019, but also alcohol sales for the first time.Disneyland's "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" will be home to Oga's Cantina, an "otherworldy" stop for music and exotic concoctions, park officials announced Thursday.Among the cantina's limited menu options will be wine, beer, and both non-alcoholic and alcoholic cocktails, according to Disney officials. (KGTV) - On Friday, Attorney and Deputy Director of ACLU’s National Immigrants’ Rights Project Lee Gelernt spoke to ABC 10News about how his staff members have not found the parents of 545 children nationwide who were separated by the Trump Administration.“We have found hundreds of others but there remains [to be] hundreds who we have not found,” he said in a Zoom interview.Earlier this week, the ACLU revealed the numbers to San Diego Federal Court Judge Dana Sabraw in a new filing for a case stemming from a lawsuit brought by the ACLU, challenging the president's practice of asylum-seeking family separations, which were put into place after he took over office. “We then had to go door to door on the ground in Central America looking for these parents. [It was a] painstaking, dangerous process. We were making some progress but ultimately the pandemic hit and that slowed things down,” he added.Gelernt said the children are now living with relatives and foster families in the U.S., after they were released from government detention. He added that the ACLU will continue searching for their parents and advocating for their return. “We think that given what these families have gone through, their children ripped away from them, they deserve legal status in the United States,” he said.ABC 10News reached out to ICE for comment, which referred us to DHS.
