SAN DIEGO, Calif. Daniel did not survive the crash. Julian is in ICU and doctors had to amputate one of his legs.Monta?o says her son Daniel had a loving heart, was positive and enthusiastic about life. Both Heard and Monta?o say they still have many questions about what happened that night. The crash happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Police say an officer ran the car’s plates and noticed it was reported stolen. SDPD says the driver ran a red light, refusing to pull over. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Archaeologists have confirmed a long-time suspicion of historians and say that famed Alcatraz prison was built over a Civil War-era military fortification.SFGate reports researchers have found a series of buildings and tunnels under the prison yard of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, which once held Al Capone.A study published in "Near Surface Geophysics" says archaeologists used ground-penetrating radar and terrestrial laser scans and historical maps and photographs. They found fully buried structures, ammunition magazines and tunnels.Historians believe workers built over existing structures when the prison was built in the 20th century.Alcatraz first came to the attention of the U.S. government after it wrestled control of California from Mexico in the 1840s.Its location in San Francisco Bay made it attractive for military fortification purposes. 886

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diegans have a new opportunity to go back to school without fear of being saddled with student loan debt. The San Diego Workforce Partnership and U.C. San Diego Extension are teaming up to create what's called an income share agreement. Here's how it works:People complete a roughly yearlong certificate program in digital marketing, business intelligence, front-end web design or java programming at UCSD Extension. The fund will front the student's entire tuition, plus support services to total about ,500. Grads only make payments on it if they have a job that pays at least ,000 a year. "Once you get a foothold in some of these jobs, your salary potential grows even faster," said Andy Hall, chief operating officer of the San Diego Workforce Partnership. Grads would be billed 6 to 8 percent of their pre-tax salary per month, but they'd never pay more than ,500. Plus, all payments top after three to five years. The idea is that the most successful grads can fund the next generation of those looking to retrain.Google.org, Strada Education Network and the James Irvine Foundation are backing the program, along with an anonymous donor. San Diego (KGTV) Over 3,000 volunteers worked Pride Weekend to make sure all the events ran smoothly. But one volunteer says a brutal attack in 2016 almost kept him from being out there. He was stabbed and beaten for wearing Pride T-shirt. “I came back because I found my pride again,” says volunteer Chris Keiser. He was one of the many volunteers up early Saturday morning making sure everyone was in place for the large parade. “I make sure everyone has their radios so they can communicate and check out their cart. We kind of rally the people together, get them excited.”But this was the first time in two years Keiser found himself volunteering after struggling to find his excitement again for the pride community. “I was going to volunteer every year after that and I just couldn’t I just couldn’t bring myself to.”In 2016, Keiser was jogging in his Oak Park neighborhood wearing a Pride T-shirt when he was beaten and stabbed on College Drive. His memory is still fuzzy about what happened. “I do remember a car, the derogatory names, then hearing a car again, and then next thing I know I was on the phone calling whoever for help.”Keiser says it was the pride community that helped him through that dark time. This year San Diego Pride is celebrating 50 years since the Stonewall Riots in New York. Keiser says he’s finding his strength in knowing others paved the way for San Diego to have such a celebration. “You made me try to silence myself and take away my pride, but all you did was make me come back stronger, and I’m louder than before.”San Diego Police investigated Keiser’s attack as a hate crime. He was not able to get a good description of the suspects who are still on the run. 1712
