SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s rainy winter led to a bug-infested spring which is, in turn, giving away to a spider-filled summer. County of San Diego officials say 2019 could bring a “bumper crop” of orb weaver spiders due to an increase of its food supply. “So, you’re probably going to be running into a lot of spider webs very soon, if you haven’t already,” said County supervising vector ecologist Chris Conlan. Conlan has a term for what happens after a person walks into a web: the crazy spider dance. Orb weaver spiders, which include any spider that weaves a web, are usually not harmful to people, according to Conlan. They generally don’t bite unless they’re threatened. “A well-fed female can be a pretty imposing spider,” Conlan said to County News Center. “But they’re generally nothing to be worried about. In all honesty, if you run into their web, their general reaction is to bail off quick. They don’t like to hang around once something that’s big enough to smash through their web hits it. They know it’s not anything they want to tackle and wrap up to eat.” Conlan recommends avoiding walking through areas spiders can use as anchor points. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Standing outside his Vista headquarters on Wednesday, Republican Darrell Issa told reporters that he's comfortable he'll stay ahead of opponent Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar in the run for a seat in California's 50th congressional district.“Statistically, it’s impossible for him to win with probably 60,000 votes left to come in,” he told reporters.Issa is a veteran politician looking to return to Congress after a two-year hiatus. He represented coastal North County's 49th district until 2018 but decided not to run for re-election as that district turned blue.“I've already spoken with Congressional leadership and I’m planning to go back to what will be a very unusual freshman orientation for someone with 18 years [of experience],” he added.ABC 10News spoke to Campa-Najjar on Tuesday after polls closed when early returns showed that he and Issa were still neck and neck. At the time he said, “Obviously, we know we've had a strong campaign that put people before politics and country before party and it is showing in this ruby red district. We're transcending partisanship.”The 31-year-old has continued trying to flip the historically red district which spans parts of East, North, and Riverside counties. He previously lost to former congressman Duncan Hunter who resigned this year after pleading guilty to a felony campaign fraud charge.On Wednesday, Campa-Najjar’s office declined a request for an interview but sent the following statement:“We’re still looking at the returns with a measure of hope and urge every last vote be counted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Qualcomm won a million decision Friday against Apple in a patent infringement case involving iPhones. A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California found the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and X infringed Qualcomm’s patents. One of the patents enables "flashless booting”, eliminating the need for separate flash memory. It also allows a smartphone to connect to the internet quickly after being powered on, according to Qualcomm officials. The other two patents allow smartphone apps to access internet data quickly, and enable high performance and graphics while increasing battery life, Qualcomm said in a news release. Qualcomm was awarded million in damages from July 6, 2017, the date the lawsuit was filed, through the end of the trial. "Today's unanimous jury verdict is the latest victory in our worldwide patent litigation directed at holding Apple accountable for using our valuable technologies without paying for them," said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel for Qualcomm. "The technologies invented by Qualcomm and others are what made it possible for Apple to enter the market and become so successful so quickly. The three patents found to be infringed in this case represent just a small fraction of Qualcomm's valuable portfolio of tens of thousands of patents. We are gratified that courts all over the world are rejecting Apple's strategy of refusing to pay for the use of our IP." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State's coronavirus cases among students continued to rise over the weekend, spiking more than 100 cases in two days.On Sunday, the college reported 286 confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases among on- and off-campus students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's museums received a glimmer of hope following the reveal of California's new guidance.That's because San Diego County was placed in the second tier, "substantial." Now, several businesses will have to opportunity to reopen, as they did in June, with modifications indoors.The San Diego Air and Space Museum announced it plans to reopen on Monday. When the museum reopened in June, staff implemented safety policies including capacity limits, social distancing, facemasks for guests and employees, hand sanitizer stations, and continuous cleaning. Museum staff also were required to have their temperatures screened daily before entering.RELATED: Several San Diego County businesses to reopen indoors with limits under new guidanceThis time around, museums will have to limit indoor activities to 25% capacity in addition to modifications, according to the state's guidance for tier two.The museum is one of a handful of Balboa Park attractions that have been able to welcome guests back.
