LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Workers at Ralphs, Albertsons and Vons/Pavilions throughout Southern California and as far north as Santa Maria ``overwhelmingly'' ratified a new contract with the grocery chains, averting a potentially costly and disruptive strike, union officials announced Thursday. Officials with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, the Los Angeles-area union representing grocery workers, issued a statement saying the deal ``represents the most significant increases in wages and benefits in over 30 years.'' ``This agreement is a first step towards security good, career jobs in the changing grocery industry,'' Kathy Finn, secretary-treasurer of UFCW 770, said in a statement. ``As important as the hundreds of millions of dollars in improvements to members is the way we got to this contract -- by standing together store by store and with our communities to demand recognition of the value we earn these corporations every day.'' Union members cast ballots on the contract proposal Monday and Tuesday. The tentative deal was announced Sunday. The previous contract between the union and the grocery companies expired in March. Grocery workers in June voted to authorize a strike if a contract deal could not be reached -- raising fears of a repeat of the 2003-04 Southland grocery strike that dragged on for 141 days. When the tentative deal was announced Sunday, Ralphs spokesman John Votava said, ``We are pleased to have worked with the union to secure increased wages, continued premium health care coverage, and pension. Our associates are the heart of our company and this agreement is a reflection of their contributions.'' According to the union, the three-year deal includes wage increases of .55 and .65 per hour depending on job classification, with pay retroactive to March. Union officials said the pact also includes more guaranteed work hours for veteran workers, improvements in health care coverage for employees and their families, full pension funding and the start of a movement to close ``the wage gap between job classifications.'' LOS ANGELES (AP) — Scientists say earthquakes that hammered the Southern California desert last summer involved ruptures on a web of interconnected faults and increased strain on a major nearby fault that has begun to slowly move.Research published Thursday in the journal Science says the earthquake sequence ended a few miles from the Garlock Fault, which runs 185 miles (300 kilometers) from the San Andreas Fault to Death Valley.The fault has been relatively quiet for 500 years but now has begun to creep.The quakes began July 4 near Ridgecrest, about 120 miles (190 kilometers) north of Los Angeles.A magnitude 6.4 foreshock was followed by a 7.1 mainshock and 100,000-plus aftershocks.The study was conducted by geophysicists from California Institute of Technology and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 818

LOS ANGELES  - Surveillance video released by the Los Angeles Police Department shows a violent taco truck robbery that left a worker with injuries.Three men entered the truck as it was parked on West Manchester Ave. in South Los Angeles around 3 a.m. on July 14.Police said the men forced the workers to the ground and demanded cash.One worker was pistol-whipped during the hold-up. There is no word on his condition.The suspects were not able to gain access to the safe in the taco truck. They took the workers’ cell phones and cash before leaving, investigators said.Los Angeles Police said the men were last seen running from the location with the victims’ property. They were described as in their 20s with no distinctive physical features.Anyone with information was asked to call the LAPD. 809

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Earthquake early warning alerts will become publicly available throughout California this week, the Governor's Office of Emergency Services said Wednesday.The system's statewide debut Thursday will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake that ravaged the San Francisco Bay area on Oct. 17, 1989, as well as the annual Great Shakeout safety drill.The warnings produced by the ShakeAlert system will be pushed through a smartphone app called MyShake and the same wireless notification system that issues Amber Alerts.The state earthquake app, developed at the University of California, Berkeley, is available for download to IOS users through iTunes and through GooglePlay stores for Android phones.The system does not predict earthquakes. Rather, it detects the start of an earthquake and calculates location, intensity and sends alerts to areas where shaking is likely to occur from quakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater.The alerts have been in development for years and last year were made broadly available to businesses, utilities, schools and other entities.Large-scale public notification has been available for Los Angeles County since the start of the year through an app developed for the city of Los Angeles, but it hasn't been triggered yet. 1300
