SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 43-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday morning with serious injuries after the car he was riding in crashed into four parked cars on a Mountain View street, police said.It happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on South 40th Street just south of Imperial Avenue, San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims said.A 38-year-old man was driving a 2005 Honda Civic southbound on South 40th Street when the car drifted to the right for unknown reasons and struck four parked cars, Heims said.The 43-year-old man, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Honda, was taken to a hospital for treatment of a fractured neck, which was not believed to be life-threatening, the officer said.The Honda driver was uninjured and 31-year-old man in the back seat of the sedan had a complaint of pain to his leg, Heims said. 847

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Misinformation comes in many forms, but some can be harder to spot than others.Whether it's sharing a video clip or picture that doesn't tell the whole story, re-posting an article from a non-credible source, or commenting on a social media thread without reading the original post, chances are, most of us have been guilty of doing this at some point.Now, social media companies and the FBI are taking steps to prevent the spread of misinformation like this, especially when it comes to subjects like elections and COVID-19."We established a relationship with social media companies and other technology companies and maintain an open channel and ongoing dialogue with them to share threat information," said Casey Harrington, a supervisory special agent at the FBI's Salt Lake City Division.Here are a few tools that social media sites are making available to help you identify and prevent the spread of misinformation.Twitter is testing a prompt that comes up when you try to retweet an article that you haven't opened before.It will ask you if you would like to open it first.So far, they say they've found that people open articles 40 percent more often after seeing the prompt, and some people have chosen not to share it after opening the article."Make sure you’re getting your news from trustworthy sources, know the origin of your information, and seek out multiple sources so you’re making an informed judgment," said Harrington.Facebook is also doing its part by:Limiting the number of times you can forward a messageTelling you how old an article isSharing where the information is coming fromProviding links to trusted sources when information reviewed by fact-checkers is is found to be falseInstagram, which is now owned by Facebook, will also flag false information and provide an explanation as to why it's not accurate."They ultimately make the decision on the content and the users on their site," Harrington said. "I think the social media companies have recognized, based on past election cycles, what our adversaries and what cybercriminals are able to do, and have taken steps to try to counter that."The difficult thing about false information is it's hard to prosecute criminally."Fake news by itself is not illegal. The FBI cannot initiate an investigation based solely on speech protected by the first amendment. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former La Jolla Country Day School teacher pleaded guilty Thursday to having sex with a 17-year-old female student and faces up to one year in local custody.An Oct. 21 sentencing date is scheduled for Jonathan Sammartino, 37, who also could face lifetime sex offender registration and be prohibited from teaching again at any school.San Diego County Superior Court Judge Charles G. Rogers, who took Sammartino's plea to a felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, said he was "not inclined" to impose sex offender registration, but still might do so at the sentencing hearing.As part of the plea agreement, felony counts of oral copulation of a minor and digital penetration of a minor were dismissed.Sammartino, the son of U.S. District Judge Janis Sammartino, remains out of custody, pending the sentencing hearing.The victim, identified only as "Jane Doe" in court proceedings, testified earlier this year at Sammartino's preliminary hearing that the first sexual encounter happened in the early part of 2016, when he arrived at her home unannounced around midnight. She said she went outside to meet with him in his car, at which point he told her he didn't trust himself around her.Sexual encounters occurred that night in his car and on several other occasions in his vehicle and his house over the next few months, she testified.The victim, who went on to attend UC Berkeley, filed a report with campus police in the summer of 2018. Charges were filed later that year.In a recorded phone call played during the preliminary hearing, Sammartino admitted to the past encounters with the victim."Why did you do it? You knew I was 17," Doe says on the recording. "You knew I was your student. You knew it was my first time and I lost my virginity to you.""I don't have a good answer, because I wasn't thinking through what I was doing," he replied, apologizing to her several times throughout the call. "I can't believe that I did that."At the preliminary hearing, defense attorney Eugene Iredale unsuccessfully argued to have the charges reduced to misdemeanors, and introduced evidence regarding a 2015 bicycling accident in which Sammartino hit a pothole while riding in La Jolla and landed on his head. Sammartino was hospitalized and had to re-learn some functions before going back to the classroom, according to the defense attorney.Iredale argued that the brain injury affected his emotions and ability to make reasonable judgments, playing "a significant factor" in the commission of the charged acts.Rogers ruled against the defense request in January. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of civic leaders will gather Monday to announce a proposed outreach program intended to help people experiencing homelessness with a rapid response team.Mayor Kevin Faulconer, City Council President Georgette Gomez, City Councilmembers Chris Ward and Monica Montgomery Steppe and San Diego Housing Commission President and CEO Richard Gentry will meet at Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park in City Heights to discuss the program, which will be presented to the City Council on Tuesday.The Coordinated Street Outreach Program marks a new approach to conducting homelessness outreach in the City of San Diego and addresses gaps in the existing system, while leveraging and enhancing outreach resources citywide.It builds on a 2018 pilot effort started in the Mid-City area by Gomez and Ward in partnership with the nonprofit service provider People Assisting the Homeless. The new program will incorporate a neighborhood- specific approach with proactive contacts with residents, business owners and civic organizations that is modeled after the pilot initiative.The Coordinated Street Outreach Program will consist of two main service elements: a Rapid Response Team and a Mobile Homelessness Response Team.The Rapid Response Team is intended to focus on areas with known concentrations of individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness and provide immediate intervention and problem-solving resources while working to improve the person's sense of safety and helping to meet their basic needs.The Mobile Homelessness Response Team will provide street-based case management and prioritize interactions with individuals who are among the city's most vulnerable. The plan is for this team to work to identify individuals who may already be connected to a housing resource and are on a localized list developed in collaboration with the Regional Task Force on the Homeless. This team's efforts are intended to help individuals address barriers to getting housing -- such as obtaining identification, accessing primary care and seeking employment resources.PATH would operate the proposed program through a contract with the San Diego Housing Commission on behalf of the city.The program will attempt to support the city's community action plan on homelessness and work toward achieving the goal of reducing unsheltered homelessness in San Diego by 50% over the next three years. 2413
