SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Bombarded with long lines and time delays, the state is planning to replace the Department of Motor Vehicles facility in Hillcrest with a larger facility. The state would tear down the current 14,319 square-foot DMV at 3960 Normal Street, and replace it with a one-story 18,540 square-foot building. The new DMV would accommodate the 931 customers that use it daily, with 141 parking spaces. It would cost .7 million. "The existing DMV Normal Street field office is not sized appropriately to accommodate the existing staffing and service demand levels needed at this location," the DMV said in an environmental notice. But the threat of shorter wait times is not being met with enthusiasm from some Hillcrest residents.Mat Wahlstrom, a member of the Uptown Planning Group, sees the project as a missed opportunity. He pointed to a now-scrapped plan to add a mixed-use housing and retail project, plus a park. It would have a new, larger DMV on the south end the 2.5-acre site."This wouldn't be a deadzone every evening, which is what it's become," Wahlstrom said. "It was supposed to have been a dual use site."Christina Valdivia, a DMV spokeswoman, says the mixed-use plan didn't work because it doesn't conform with its vehicle-centric business model.Meanwhile, the Hillcrest Farmers Market is raising issue with the DMV's plan to add a 7-foot-tall wrought iron fence around the property. The market uses the DMV lots for parking and some of its vendors."It would really create this sort of fortress DMV that we are hostile to," said Ben Nichols, who heads the Hillcrest Business Association.Valdivia says the DMV is installing fences at all of its new and replacement buildings to protect against vandalism, theft, damage, and even human waste. Nichols said it would just push those problems onto the public sidewalk.Now, two state legislators, Sen. Toni Atkins, and Asm. Todd Gloria, are getting involved with the project. The plan is currently under environmental review. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Councilman Scott Sherman's newly announced candidacy will alter the race to become San Diego's next mayor.Sherman, termed out from City Council, is the first household Republican to run to lead America's eighth largest city. Sherman announced he would run just before the Dec. 6 deadline to file for the March 2020 primary. Current Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, is termed out. In an interview, Sherman said he did not want the mayoral debates to be dominated by two big-name Democrats: State Assemblyman Todd Gloria and City Council President Pro-Tem Barbara Bry. Sherman says he'll run on a platform of reducing regulations to bring lower cost market-rate housing. He also wants to increase enforcement of crimes by the homeless, compelling them to seek help. Finally, he says he wants to reduce what he calls union control at City Hall. "Listening to the two major candidates there, I'm going, 'Well, things that I care about aren't being discussed so let's see what I can do,'" he said. The Mayor is officially a nonpartisan job, but Sherman is facing an uphill battle as a Republican. "You have to assume that Scott Sherman will get the majority, if not the vast majority of Republican votes, and pick up some independent votes," said political analyst John Dadian. "There's a very good chance that he will get in the runoff."The top two vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, will move on to the November primary. In September, a 10News-Union-Tribune scientific poll showed Gloria leading Bry by a two-to-one margin, with 31 percent of voters supporting Gloria, and 15 percent supporting Bry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Court documents are giving a glimpse into the past of the 26-year-old accused of killing his parents and sister in a Logan Heights house fire.Wilber Romero is accused of starting the fire at the home on the 3100 block of Clay Street around 4:30 a.m. October 13. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, 46-year-old Nicolasa Maya-Romero and 21-year-old Iris Romero died at the hospital in the days following the blaze.The family’s 23-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son were also hospitalized. Wilber is facing several charges in the fire, including first-degree murder, arson and attempted first-degree murder. Court documents show it wasn’t the first time he allegedly targeted his family. He reportedly attacked his father with a brick and rocks and damaged his car in September of 2018. The incident prompted a police standoff that ended when police shot bean bags at Wilber and released a police dog, documents show. The documents go on to state Wilber was in a car accident when he was 6-years-old and that he has suffered from a learning disability since the crash. According to the documents, Wilber also struggled with drug addiction. 1203

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews Thursday rescued a woman they say broke her leg while hiking above Blacks Beach.According to authorities, the incident happened around 2 p.m. in the Box Canyon area. Lifeguards say a woman in her 20s fell while hiking in the area and broke her leg.A helicopter could be seen lifting the woman from the canyon and taking her to a nearby hospital.Her condition is unknown at this time. 417
