SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has opened cool zones as the county faces scorching temperatures amid the coronavirus pandemic. A cool zone will open at noon today in the former Sears building at Chula Vista Center, providing socially distant and disinfected spaces to beat the heat.With a heat wave expected this weekend and into next week and the city's recreation centers and libraries closed to the public due to the pandemic, the city issued a statement saying the opening of a cool zone was paramount.The Chula Vista cool zone will be open when temperatures exceed 85 degrees, and will be operated by city recreation staff. Each area will be disinfected between uses. Water is allowed, but no food, no smoking and no pets. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One of four men who pleaded guilty in connection with last year's shotgun slaying of a Pacific Beach resident was sentenced Friday to eight years in state prison.Freddy Sosa, 38, was sentenced for his role in the Dec. 29, 2018, death of 44-year-old MarcAnthony Mendivil, who was killed in a home in the 2300 block of Wilbur Avenue.Sosa's co-defendants, Carlos Yslas, 25; Pedro Ramirez, 28; and Paul Charles Weinberger, 51, await sentencing. Yslas and Ramirez pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, while Weinberger pleaded to an assault with a deadly weapon count.RELATED: Three men plead guilty to Pacific Beach shotgun slayingYslas, who fired the fatal shots, faces up to 30 years in state prison when he is sentenced Jan. 10.Ramirez, who faces eight years in prison, is also due to be sentenced Jan. 10, while Weinberger is slated to be sentenced to up to four years in prison on Dec. 6.A probation report filed with the court indicates Mendivil was living at Weinberger's home at the time of his death.RELATED: Suspects in fatal Pacific Beach shooting to be arraigned; victim identifiedSosa had previously lived at the home, but was kicked out by Weinberger following a dispute, the report states.Mendivil then moved in, but soon after, Weinberger contacted Sosa asking him for help in removing Mendivil from the home for unspecified reasons, investigators were told. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol is reporting no fatalities and 26 drunk driving arrests in San Diego County for the Labor Day weekend period of 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.Last year for the same period, there were 40 DUI arrests and no fatalities in the county, according to the CHP.Across California, the CHP reported 551 DUI arrests and 18 fatalities for the same period. Last year, they reported 717 DUI arrests and 11 fatalities.The DUI arrests are only those made by CHP officers, while fatality statistics are for all law enforcement agencies.Statewide, 13 vehicle occupants were killed in CHP jurisdiction, six without safety belts. There were four motorcyclists killed in CHP jurisdiction, one without a helmet.The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways, and on all roads in unincorporated areas. 833
