BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday called for new initiatives to boost the China-France comprehensive strategic partnership.     The call was made during a meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and former French President Jacques Chirac, who is in Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs. Hu praised Chirac, on his ninth visit to China, as an old friend of the Chinese people for his contribution to the China-France friendship.     "The Chinese people will never forget this," Hu was quote as saying by a press release from Chinese Foreign Ministry.     Hu said the consolidation of ties, especially in the context of the international financial crisis, would help tackle the crisis and be conducive to promoting long-term peace, stability and prosperity.     "I hope the two countries and two peoples can make joint efforts to advance the development of bilateral strategic partnership," Hu said.     Chirac highlighted the achievements of China in its development, calling the development "a positive factor" in world prosperity, according to the press release.     China ranked as a world power through its own efforts, Chirac said, and its peaceful development was helpful to maintaining stability and prosperity.

NANJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping urged Communist Party leaders Thursday to cultivate fine work styles and keep in close contact with the people.     Leaders should be able to endure loneliness, content to live a simple lifestyle, resist temptation and stand up to tests, he said during a conference on studying and implementing the scientific concept of development held in the coastal province of Jiangsu.     Government leaders should promote a hard-working style and put limited funds and natural resources to the best use, said Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.     He asked officials to carry out investigations and studies of actual situations, pay visits to the grassroots levels and go down to the people.     The people's requests should serve as the fundamental basis for government decisions, and leaders should put those issues that are in the fundamental and most practical interests of the people at the top of their agenda, he said.     Leaders should take a correct attitude towards their personal gains or losses, and should not be preoccupied with respectability and material values, said Xi.

HELSINKI, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Finland on Thursday agreed to push for closer economic cooperation to tackle the ongoing global financial crisis.     Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang unveiled broad measures to work together with Finland to fight the global financial crisis after meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen. Li and Vanhanen joined a signing ceremony of several government and business agreements between the two sides, under which Li said China would purchase Finland's advanced environment-friendly technologies.     China would also send a large group of entrepreneurs to Finland within two weeks to make major purchases of Finnish goods, according to Li. TAIPEI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian has been indicted on new corruption charges, prosecutors said here Tuesday.     While in office, Chen and his wife Wu Shu-chen took 10 million New Taiwan dollars (302,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes from a local businesswoman, and demanded bribes and donations totaling 300 million New Taiwan dollars from a former banker, prosecutors said at a press conference.     Chen was first indicted on Dec. 12 for money laundering and bribery. He and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million New Taiwan dollars (3.15 million U.S. dollars) in public funds and accepting bribes of at least 9 million U.S. dollars in a land purchase deal. Chen and his collaborators are also accused of laundering the illegal income.     Chen has been in detention since last December and faces life in prison if convicted.     He was elected to the post of Taiwan leader eight years ago but was ousted in an election in May last year.

BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Many countries around the world said the July 5 riot in northwest China is an internal affair of the country, and the Chinese government is handling the incident properly.     A spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Andrei Popov, said Xinjiang is an inalienable part of China, and the unrest is a purely internal matter of China.     The riot in Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,680 injured.     Popov also expressed hope that China could soon restore stability in the region by adopting effective measures in accordance with the law.     He said Belarus expresses its deep sympathy to the people who suffered personal injuries or loss of property during the violence.     A spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, Abdul Basit, said his country deplores any attempt to hinder China's progress.     "We deplore any such attempt" which tries to impede the progress which has been achieved by China in the context of social harmony, he said in a recent interview with Xinhua.     "We are committed not to allow any element in Pakistan to work against the interests of China because China's interests are Pakistan's interests. We cannot allow any activity that will damage China's interests," Basit said.     Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued shortly after the Urumqi riot, applauded the efforts of the Chinese leadership to promote the concept of harmony both at home, in Asia and the rest of the world.     Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said his country supports the principle of resolving the issue within the framework of the territorial integrity of China.     The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the country highly values its relations with China and does not intend to interfere in China's internal affairs.     Thailand's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday the July 5 riot is a domestic issue of China and it believs China is capable of stabilizing the situation and restoring peace and harmony in Xinjiang.     Combodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said: "The Chinese government is taking appropriate measures to handle the issue."     The Foreign Ministry of Laos also issued a statement on the July 5 riot. It said Laos believes the measures the Chinese government has adopted to safeguard social stability are necessary and legitimate, and expressed hope the government could bring peace back to the region at an early date.
