BEIJING, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign-funded enterprises in China exported 494.4 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products in 2009.A document posted on the website of the General Administration of Customs (GAC) said the figure made up 69.3 percent of the country's total exports of such products in the past year.Exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products by privately-owned enterprises totalled 106.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2009, down 8.7 percent from a year earlier, according to the document.State-owned enterprises only exported 92.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products, accounting for 12.9 percent of the country's total machinery, electrical and electronic products last year.The GAC document also said the majority of the country's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products fell into the category of processing and assembling trade.China's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products in the category of processing and assembling trade totalled 466.4 billion U.S. dollars last year, making up 65.4 percent of the country's total exports of such products.The country exported 713.1 billion U.S. dollars worth of machinery, electrical and electronic products last year, down 13.4 percent year-on-year. The exports contributed 59.3 percent to China's total exports in 2009.The European Union (EU), the United States of America and Hong Kong were the three major destinations for the China mainland's exports of machinery, electrical and electronic products last year.China exported 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars worth of products last year, down 16 percent from 2008, replacing Germany as the world's largest exporter.

BRUSSELS, March 22 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes the latest document issued by the European Union (EU) on climate change, but insists that the EU should raise its emission cut target to 30 percent by 2020, a visiting Chinese official said on Monday.Su Wei,chief negotiator of China for climate change talks in Copenhagen, told a press briefing here that China welcomed the communication the EU issued in earlier March,which elaborated the bloc's standpoints on climate change for the first time following the Copenhagen talks in December."China welcomed in general the EU's latest positions," which among others reaffirmed the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" undertaken by developing and developed countries in dealing with climate change, the Chinese official said.In the communication issued on March 9, the EU expresses its willingness to continue to play a leading role in fighting against climate change and reaffirms its commitment to reduce its greenhouse gases emissions by 20 percent by 2020 and to increase this reduction to 30 percent if "the conditions are right."However, Su told reporters that EU should and could raise its emission cut target to 30 percent by 2020 on the basis of 1990 if the bloc wanted to play a leading role in dealing with climate change.The move would put more pressure on the United States to put forward ambitious goals, the chief negotiator said.Su said he was visiting the EU headquarters with a Chinese delegation led by Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, to exchange views with his EU counterparts on climate change.China and the EU shared many common goals and interests, the two sides should work together to boost international negotiations on climate change, he said.World leaders are scheduled to meet later this year in the Mexican resort town of Cancun for another go at inking a legally- binding global accord on emission reductions after 2012.Su said that China hoped the meeting in Cancun can achieve positive and meaningful results and make further progress on the basis of the Copenhagen talks.

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Some 64.15 million people travelled on China's roads on Saturday, the 22nd day of the Spring Festival traffic rush, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) said Sunday.This figure is a 7.8 percent increase compared to the corresponding day last year, as millions of people began to return to work as the one-week holiday neared its end, the MOT said in a statement on its website.The Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, fell on Feb. 14 this year. HONG KONG, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Plans of extensive and comprehensive inspection of roughly 4,000 buildings aged 50 years and over will be carried out in a month, said the website of the HK Special Administrative Regional government on Saturday after a building collapse incident."This is a comprehensive check across the territory of all the buildings of this age, which we believed are more or less of similar construction, which is reinforced concrete framed construction," said Secretary for Development, Carrie Lam, after inspecting the scene of the building collapse case in Ma Tau Wai Road Saturday.A five-story apartment building of more than 50 years old in Hung Hom, Hong Kong's Kowloon district, collapsed suddenly around 1:30 p.m. local time ( 0530 GMT) Friday afternoon. Four people were confirmed dead and two others injured."we are going to set up 40 teams of professional and technical staff to go out to various parts of Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories to inspect these 4,000 buildings. The target is to complete these comprehensive inspection within a month. We will then follow up with the needed remedial action," she added.Carrie Lam also mentioned she was going to introduce into the Legislative Council a new piece of legislation concerning mandatory inspection of Hong Kong's buildings over 30 years old and also mandatory inspection of windows for buildings aged 10 years and over.
