Home listings in more cities will no longer use the word "master" to describe large bedrooms and bathrooms.In June, the Houston Association of Realtors decided to instead use the word “primary” to describe the largest bedroom or bathroom in a home listing.The association, HAR for short, updated listings on the website through mid-June. In a statement, the organization said the change has been “raised and considered for many years” and was one of nine requests submitted from HAR members for discussion at recent meetings about updating MLS listings. Other requests included things like electric vehicle charging stations and balcony details.“The overarching message was that some members were concerned about how the terms might be perceived by some other agents and consumers. Based on the discussion that took place, more members viewed the terms as sexist than racist, although some did view them as racist,” the statement said. “The origin of the terms is debated, and we are not saying they are rooted in slavery.”The word “master” is not banned within the organization and members, only in their online listings. Realtors may choose to use “master” on their own materials selling a home.HAR told members the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development has already advised that use of the term “master bedroom” or “master bathroom” is not discriminatory and does not violate Fair Housing laws.Some builders have already dropped the term years ago, HAR said. According to the Houston Chronicle, at least one builder in Texas now calls a home's primary bedroom an "owner's retreat." But several companies developing rapid at-home COVID-19 tests are hopeful that won't be the case next year. The goal is to make inexpensive, easy-to-use COVID tests that can deliver results in minutes, just like a pregnancy test. "For people to feel comfortable to associate with friends or family, there needs to be a testing methodology ideally that can be performed at home," said Tony Lemmo, CEO of the manufacturing company BioDot.The company's technology is being used by over 70 manufacturers worldwide making COVID-19 antigen, antibody, and PCR tests. Their automated platforms dispense nanoliter/picoliter amounts of reagent onto the tests accurately and fast.Lemmo says just one of their systems can support the production of roughly 100 million COVID-19 tests per year, helping to make high-volume production possible.“We knew we were going to be called on by customers to manufacture more equipment to provide them the ability to manufacture more tests," said Lemmo. To meet customer demand, BioDot increased staffing and built a new facility, compressing production time from months to weeks. The FDA recently authorized the first rapid at-home test that can deliver results in 30 minutes, eliminating the need for a lab to test the sample. But the molecular single-use test will only be available to patients with a doctor's prescription who are suspected of being infected with COVID-19.Companies developing tests hope the FDA will soon authorize another at-home testing tool: the rapid antigen test.These inexpensive tests provide results within minutes, and companies developing them say millions could be sold without a doctor's referral.“From what we’re hearing, it’s really just a matter of possibly months before there’s at least sufficient data to be able to support an at-home use of a test like an antigen test," said Lemmo.Lemmo says if authorized by the FDA, manufacturers could make millions of these tests in a matter of months. But antigen tests are less accurate, and the FDA wants to ensure they'll be simple enough for people to use at home. There are also concerns over how the data will be reported to health authorities. “I think any at-home testing or massive rollout of a test into the communities needs to be done very carefully and with a lot of education around it," said Clinical Lab Director Melissa Miller. Dr. Miller is a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Medical Director for the Clinical Microbiology Lab for the Medical Center.She worries the inaccuracies of these tests could eventually lead the public to lose trust in all testing. “Even at 98 percent specificity, which is very, very high. That means you’re going to have a false positive two out of every 100. If you started testing a hundred million people, this is millions of people who have a false-positive test," said Dr. Miller. She says this could lead to healthy people isolating and missing work or school unnecessarily, and false-negative results could give people a false sense of security. “These rapid antigen tests were pushed out to skilled nursing facilities; this is a very high-risk patient population. This is actually where you want a very accurate test," said Dr. Miller. She says it’s unclear how well antigen tests detect the virus in asymptomatic patients but agrees more data is needed to figure that out.“It might make more sense for K-12 schools, or even college settings, where there’s less risk for a poor outcome if you have a false positive or a false negative," said Dr. Miller. But with a growing demand for convenient at-home testing, manufacturers are hopeful that in the months ahead, the FDA will soon open the door to new solutions. 3889

GOLETA, Calif. (KGTV) - A rare sea creature that’s not supposed to live in the Northern Hemisphere surprised scientists by washing ashore in Goleta last week. The Mola tecta, more commonly known as the hoodwinker sunfish, is a rare species first identified in 2017, according to experts at University of California, Santa Barbara. UCSB reported the fish at Sands Beach in the university's Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve, the Associated Press reported. An intern alerted a reserve staffer who initially thought it was a type of local sunfish. “This is certainly the most remarkable organism I have seen wash up on the beach in my four years at the reserve,” said Jessica Nielsen, a conservation specialist at Coal Oil Point on the UCSB website. “It really was exciting to collect the photos and samples knowing that it could potentially be such an extraordinary sighting.” Scientists have not yet determine how the fish died. 932
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A 5-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after she was attacked by a bear overnight in east Orchard Mesa.The girl had gone outside around 2:30 a.m. early Sunday to investigate noises she thought were being made by her dog, the girl’s mother told Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers.But the girl’s mother heard her daughter screaming and went outside to see a “large black bear” dragging her daughter, CPW officials said. The bear dropped the girl after her mother screamed at it. Their home is in the east Orchard Mesa area, above the Colorado River corridor, officials said.The girl was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction with serious injuries, CPW said. Radio traffic from first responders said she had been bitten on her back and near her head.Officers were tracking the bear, along with federal wildlife officials, on Sunday morning. CPW said area residents could expect to see law enforcement officials and hounds in the area, and ask anyone to report bear sightings to officials. 1045

For many Americans, they’re not quite sold on restaurants being safe despite most restaurants taking measures to protect staff and customers.ValuePenguin, which is associated with Lending Tree, conducted a survey of 1,000 Americans. The survey found that 44% of Americans feel indoor restaurants are unsafe to visit amid a pandemic, compared to 40% who believe they are safe. Women were more likely to say indoor dining is unsafe compared to men.More consumers, however, say getting takeout and dining outdoors is safe. Nearly 67% of respondents felt it’s safe to get takeout, and 58% said eating outdoors is safe.What do experts say?Many experts have said even with the precautions restaurants are taking, there is still a sizeable risk of catching the virus while dining inside. These risks, however, are generally significantly lower for those dining outside.Last month in an interview with MSNBC, Dr. Anthony Fauci pointed toward restaurants being among riskiest places to visit amid the pandemic. Fauci added that bars and gyms also are considered risky in his view.“When you have restaurants indoors in a situation where you have a high degree of infection in the community [and] you're not wearing masks, that's a problem,” Dr. Fauci said.Fauci pointed toward a September 2020 CDC study that found those who visited restaurants in the previous two weeks were two times more likely to test positive for the coronavirus than those who said they had not been inside a restaurant.“Reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation,” the CDC said. “Direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance. Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use.”Economic impact to restaurantsWith many restaurants forced to close indoor operations during the spring, and scale back indoor capacity during the summer, millions were out of work. According to the National Restaurant Association, 8 million restaurant workers, representing nearly half of the industry, were without jobs during the height of the pandemic. There remained over 2 million out-of-work restaurant employees as of the start of October.As of Wednesday, 100,000 restaurants have either closed for good, or for a significant period of time. As a whole, the restaurant industry is expected to lose 0 billion by the end of 2020.In hopes of minimizing spread and regaining customer confidence, the CDC and industry leaders have implemented cleaning procedures.
