SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Fire crews continued mopping up what was left of the Willow Fire in Rancho San Diego Thursday, as they remain on high alert during this Red Flag Warning.One home was destroyed in the brush fire, while six others were damaged when the flames, pushed by wind quickly moved up a hillside to Willow Glen Drive Wednesday.The fire prompted evacuations. Neighbors told ABC 10News they were scrambling to get out in the middle of the night, unsure of what to grab."I happened to be on scene first with our fire chief and it was about five acres when I first got here and quickly grew, and was in the backyards of some of these homes in 5 to 10 minutes," said Andy Lawler, San Miguel Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief.Crews were able to quickly gain control of the flames, making airdrops when safe, and saving homes — despite the wind working against them.Over in San Marcos, the Sycamore Fire grew to three acres Thursday afternoon but firefighters were ready to attack it from all angles.Fire departments across San Diego County have upped their staffing and remain on high alert for the next few days."We have dedicated crews on these brush rigs so they have a quicker response throughout the city of San Diego," San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief R.J. Hartman said. According to officials with the Workforce Partnership, walk-ins won’t be accepted, however some services will be available by appointment only.“Our resources have always been available online, and actually the number one way people file for unemployment in or out of a public health emergency is online,” said Andrew Picard, chief program Officer at the San Diego Workforce Partnership.Picard said if people don't have a computer or internet access, don't worry, the phone still works. Career agents and advisors with the organization can walk you through a job search or the unemployment process.“We have teams of career agents and advisors standing by over the phone and with online tools to do virtual meetings,” Picard said. “A great deal of resources and programs that are still in operation and still available to the community.”Unemployment assistance isn’t just for people who recently lost their job.According to the Employment Development Department, “You are encouraged to apply for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits if you are unemployed, which includes reasons such as, your hours are reduced due to the quarantine, you were separated from your employer during the quarantine, you are subject to a quarantine required by a medical professional or state or local health officer.”Last week Governor Gavin Newsom sped up the time it takes to get financial assistance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration workers in San Diego are just some of the local federal workers impacted by the government shutdown.Of the more than 3,000 TSA employees between San Diego and San Luis Obispo represented by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1260, about 600 employees work in San Diego, the union told 10News.The impact of the shutdown has been "immense" on many employees, AFGE says.RELATED: Government shutdown delays investigation into man's death at Yosemite National Park"The impact has obviously been immense, especially considering it began during the holiday season and into the new year when many employees had already purchased gifts for their families, incurred debts, and still had to worry about upcoming bills," AFGE Vice President Bobby Orozco Jr. says.Orozco pointed to the fact many federal employees live paycheck-to-paycheck as a cause for concern, noting that TSA frontline employees make an average of ,000 annually. Daily expenses like buying gas, lunch, and affording child care are some of the immediate impacts employees are facing.10News spoke to several TSA workers at San Diego International Airport off-camera, who said they, too, feel the pinch. One man said he was one of the fortunate people who have family support in case of an emergency. But his co-workers are not so lucky. Another employee told 10News that he is struggling as he enters his third week without a paycheck. Unable to pay his bills, he is charging everything onto new credit cards. "This shutdown, as all others prior, forces employees to use credit cards and other emergency funds, if applicable, in order to make ends meet until a resolution is met," Orozco said. Call-outs at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport increased by 200-300 percent, according to one local TSA official.Some are calling this phenomenon the "Blue flu," in reference to the TSA uniform colors. 10News asked TSA workers here if they were seeing an increased number of call-outs recently. A few people said they had not noticed a drastic difference, but come next week, it may be a different story.While wait times could be affected by an increase in call outs, TSA spokesman Michael Bilello told CNN they don't expect a lapse in security or wait times."Call-outs began over the Holiday period and have increased, but are causing minimal impact given there are 51,739 employees supporting the screening process," Bilello told CNN. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Environmental groups are increasing pressure on members of Congress to support the Green New Deal.On Friday, about two dozen demonstrators rallied outside Democratic Congressman Scott Peters' office in the UTC area to get him to sign on. "We're intent on pushing forward with what seems to be the strongest commitment to making important action on climate change by our government," said Karl Aldinger, a Fallbrook resident and member of the a group called Sunrise Movement.Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the deal in February. It lays out a series of goals, including getting the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. It also touches on issues surrounding education and wages. Peters, who represents the 52nd District, is the only San Diego County democrat not to sign onto the deal. He said he prefers a more direct approach through specific actions that can get bipartisan approval. Peters pointed to a series of bills that just passed out of committee."We don't want to scare away people from solutions," Peters said. "This is a problem we only have 10 or 12 years to solve. It can't be done just by Democrats, it can't be done just by liberals. It has to be done by everybody."Political analyst John Dadian says more moederate approaches could play a hand in the 2020 election."This dovetails into why we're seeing, in the last 10 years, what's increased every cycle, the rise of the independent, because the independents are saying I don't want to be Republican or Democrat, I don't always agree, I want to make my own decisions," he said.
