After nearly 100 years, Dreyers Grand Ice Cream has changed the name of their chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream bars to “Edy’s Pie.” They are named after one of the company’s founders, Joseph Edy.This summer, Dreyer's joined a list of food companies who announced they were reconsidering product names deemed derogatory and racially insensitive in the wake of demonstrations about police brutality and systemic racism following the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. This also included Aunt Jemima syrup and Uncle Ben’s rice.The ice cream treat had been called “Eskimo Pie.” Production was paused over the summer as a new name and packaging was created."We are committed to being a part of the solution on racial equality, and recognize the term is derogatory," Elizabell Marquez, head of marketing for parent company Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream, said in a statement in June when they announced they were changing the name.“Edy’s Pie” will be available in stores early next year, according to the company. 1035

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — One northern Kentucky family honored their lost wife and mother by paying it forward to brighten the morning of dozens of people.The Peters family celebrated what they called "Family Friday," where every Friday they put aside distractions and did something together."Our family began our Family Friday in the drive-thru at Dunkin'," 11-year-old Davis Peter said."Every Friday, especially when he was out of school, we would make sure we would enjoy time together as a family," Barry Peters, Davis' father, said. Then, in June, Laura Peters, Barry's wife and Davis' mom, died after going into cardiac arrest at 41 years old. "Since then we have learned to walk in a new normal," Barry said. Barry and Davis wanted to honor Laura, so they made a trip to Dunkin'.Laura "ran on Dunkin'," Davis said, getting coffee there at least four times a week. With that in mind, Davis and Barry did some math to figure out how much Laura would have spent at Dunkin' over six months."Since it's been six months, that would be four medium coffees a week at a piece for the last 26 weeks, equaling 8," Davis said. Barry and Davis then made a trip to Dunkin' with that money."I need you to take the 8; that's how much coffee she would have drank over the last six months," Davis said. "I need you to pay for everyone behind us until it runs out."Barry and Davis then watched from the parking lot as cars rolled up and ordered their morning cup of Joe."Every time somebody pulled up and we'd say, 'You're paid for,' everybody's mouth just fell," Amanda Jones, a shift leader at Dunkin', said. "Then when we told them why, what had happened, everybody was teary-eyed.""I don't remember one person who didn't honk their horn and be thankful," Davis said. A woman in Tallahassee, Florida is accused of drawing a gun on another shopper at a Publix grocery store last Sunday after the victim cut in line, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. According to a report of the incident by the Leon County Sheriff's Office obtained by the Tallahassee Democrat, Jessica Mock, 36, was about to check out at the Publix, but had forgotten an item. She left her cart in line to retrieve the item. When she returned, another customer had gotten in line in front of her. After Mock and the other female customer argued, the other woman got in another line. According to the report, the customer told Mock, "I'll meet you outside." Mock responded, "I'll see you outside."Once outside, Mock is accused of pulling a gun out of her waistband on the shopper. Later, the victim drove away and called law enforcement while Mock allegedly followed the woman. That is when police caught up to Mock. Mock denied pulling a gun or intentionally following the woman, but law enforcement did find a firearm. Mock was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, according to the report given to the Tallahassee Democrat.  1233

After dozens of puppies were found in rural Pottawattamie County, Iowa with no food and water before being rescued Sunday, authorities ramped up their investigation into Young Gunz Kennel.They obtained a search warrant and confiscated items for several hours Tuesday.Sheriff deputies and animal control personnel hauled away a large number of kennels that were at the unlicensed facility, which was used for obedience and hunting training, as well as dog breeding. Investigators could also be seen snapping photos and collecting additional evidence that they could find at the site, which housed as many as 50 dogs before many of them were found inside their kennels severely malnourished. A total of four dogs have now been found dead, and 10 are missing.Copper was one of the dogs that was rescued on Sunday. When his owner Wil Beach picked him up, Copper had lost 20 pounds and was covered in feces. "He was very scared but still in high spirits, he was the same dog emotionally when I got him (back) than when I dropped him off,” says Beach.Beach says he took Copper and a 0 check to owner Dustin Young in January after high praises from friends. He says he did not suspect anything amiss when he made the drop-off. "When I was there it was neat and clean and organized and he was very talkative and he just seemed like he had a passion for dogs," says Beach.Beach is thankful that his two-year old pup is okay, with no major issues from the abandonment.  1500

About 40,000 workers in the airline industry are facing layoffs on Thursday unless Congress comes up with another aid package. Many are worried about how they'll pay for rents, mortgages and food, or for health insurance. A clause in the billion aid package to airlines at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic prevented them from laying off workers. But that clause expires on Thursday. Some workers are holding out hope that another agreement can still be reached.
