SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members of a DUI crash victim shared emotional stories about their loss at the driver’s sentencing hearing Friday. Lauren Freeman cried as statements were made about the Feb. 2018 crash in Ocean Beach. Prosecutors said Freeman drove the wrong way on a transition ramp between I-5 and I-8, crashing into Justin Callahan’s car. “I'm Justin's father, he is buried next to his sister who died in 2005. So I think that there's a rule somewhere that children aren't supposed to die before the parents,” said Callahan’s father. Callahan was headed home to Ocean Beach from his job in Chula Vista when he died. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Detainees inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center can reportedly no longer make phone calls to certain immigrants' rights activists. “Quite frankly, I'm outraged that a U.S. federal agency (ICE) would cut off communication,” said Alex Mensing with Pueblo Sin Fronteras. Mensing told ABC10 News on Tuesday that his number was blocked along with numbers to another immigrants’ rights activist group, Otay Mesa Detention Resistance.“Last time I checked, in the United States we're not supposed to censor people's ability to denounce abuses, to denounce medical negligence, to denounce physical assault by guards…by private prison guards or ICE officers against the people,” he added.The Otay Mesa Detention Center has come under fire in recent months for allegations of poor health conditions and abuses inside, as hundreds of people being housed there were testing positive for COVID-19.In May, Salvadoran Carlos Escobar-Mejia became the first detainee in U.S. custody to die after testing positive for the virus. His funeral was held last week.ICE contractor CoreCivic operates the facility.When asked Tuesday about blocking calls, CoreCivic replied, “We took this action at the direction of our government partner. We encourage you to reach out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for more information on their rationale for this decision.”On Tuesday, a spokesperson for ICE sent ABC10 News the following statement:“Due to safety concerns for all detainees in custody, ICE has temporarily blocked detainee calls at Otay Mesa Detention Center to a specific San Diego area phone number after detainee calls to this number resulted in detainees exhibiting highly disruptive behavior, threatening the health and security of other detainees and employees at the facility. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Evacuations across San Diego County during large wildfires will look different this fire season due to the pandemic.Sean Mahoney, Regional Chief Executive Officer for the American Red Cross Southern California Region, said they've put together a plan for families that could be impacted by wildfires this year.Mahoney said it starts with the temporary evacuation points, where families can initially go after being evacuated. That is a place for them to safety wait until firefighters can get the fire under control and to receive information.Mahoney said buildings like community centers and libraries have traditionally served as temporary evacuation points, but putting people indoors now carries risk due to COVID-19.This year, the Red Cross has identified several possible temporary evacuation points that would be safer during the pandemic. Many are local school parking lots. Instead of waiting indoors, they will ask for families to remain in their vehicles until a Red Cross worker can attend to them."We would approach their window, we would have a mask, and we would get their cell numbers, and from that point on, we can use cell phones to give them updates," Mahoney said.Mahoney added they picked parking structures with shade so families can be more comfortable.In cases where families need to be sheltered overnight, Mahoney said they have two plans, depending on the situation."If there are just a small number of people displaced, we'll put them in hotel rooms we'll have Red Cross people in the hotels, and then we'll just have to adjust feeding them as well," Mahoney said. "It'll be much more costly, but we have a responsibility, and it's our mission to provide sheltering and feeding folks on the worst day of their lives, and we take it very seriously."In cases where they have to establish an overnight shelter, Mahoney said they would look to set up several shelters with fewer people at each one. Space and capacity would be factors."Certainly at the shelters, our staff will be wearing masks, and taking those precautions as far advanced cleaning and separating people and separating cots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fernanda Whitworth watched her husband Ralph battle cancer for years."He couldn't swallow, he couldn't talk or basically eat. So he lost 45 pounds, it's literally barbaric."Ralph Whitworth was diagnosed with HPV-related tongue cancer in 2013. It eventually claimed his life in 2016.Before Ralph died, the Whitworths began a quest to find a cure. It's a mission Fernanda has carried on."I feel like we are so close; we're on the tipping point of finding a cure," she explained. The nonprofit they founded in San Diego, The Immunotherapy Foundation, is dedicated to funding the most promising research on HPV-driven cancers."This is a huge problem.
