INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana schools won’t have to place an “In God We Trust” sign in every classroom in the state, after some changes were made to a Senate proposal Wednesday.Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn introduced Senate Bill 131, which originally mandated each school place a poster or framed photo in every classroom and library that shows the following:The phrase, “In God We Trust”United States flagIndiana flagSB 131 was amended Wednesday afternoon to change the language in the bill and make it optional for the school corporations to put up the posters. It was also changed to state that if a school does put up such a poster, they must raise the funds on their own – instead of using public funds.If the bill sounds familiar, it’s because Kruse introduced a similar bill last year. Last year’s bill also called for every school including a study of the Bible as an elective course in its curriculum. The 2019 bill was vastly different at the end of the process than the one Kruse initially introduced.Sen. Mark Stoops, D-Bloomington, spoke against the bill in the last committee hearing, and did so again Wednesday."The Declaration of Independence noted that the power of the government is not from God, but from the people,” he said. “I think it's important to understand what the Founding Fathers believed when they had the clause that there must be a separation of church and state. The study also found that 60% of Uber customers never tip, while 1% always leave a tip. List's study included 40 million trips in the cities of Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Asheville, North Carolina, and Bloomington, Indiana.List's study found the average of those who do tip is .11, about 26% of their fare. LAKELAND, Fla. — While a 10-year-old boy is still recovering after a dangerous fall from a zip line at the Urban Air Adventure Park in September, his mother is warning others. Kimberly Barnes filed a lawsuit against against the company that owns the Lakeland, Florida, facility, UATP Management, on Monday. She says employees were negligent and didn’t fasten her son into the harness on the "Sky Ride" properly. Her legal team also alleges a design flaw with the harness. In a press conference on Tuesday, Barnes and her attorney Steven Capriati, with Morgan and Morgan, addressed the media. The mother recalled when she got the frantic phone call on Sept. 1. “He had fallen, there was a very high fall,” Barnes said. The lawsuit says her son fell more than 20 feet. Video from inside the facility shows the 10-year-old falling into a hard concrete floor. He was airlifted and suffered serious injuries, including several broken ribs, a collapsed lung and head injuries.Two months later, Barnes says her son is still struggling to go to school and fighting for normalcy. “He is doing the best he can he wants to have his normal life back and have his normal routine, but it’s a day by day process for him,” she said.In a 911 call obtained Tuesday, two employees called for help saying the boy had fallen off the zip line and needed an ambulance.Although awake and lucid, the boy can be heard in the background of the call screaming in pain. He's heard complaining of back, foot and head pain.“He is in danger and do not splint any injuries. Reassure him help is on the way,” the dispatcher says. Kia is joining its affiliate Hyundai in recalling thousands of vehicles in the U.S. because water can get into a brake computer, cause an electrical short and possibly a fire.The Kia recall covers nearly 229,000 Sedona minivans from the 2006 through 2010 model years. Also covered are Sorento SUVs from 2007 through 2009. Kia is telling owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures and other vehicles until the problem can be fixed.The company says in documents posted Thursday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that moisture can get into the antilock brake control computer and cause an electrical short and possible fires. Kia has reports of seven fires, but no injuries. The problem can happen even if the engine is turned off.The recall is another in a series of problems that the South Korean automakers have had with engine fires during the past few years. Past problems have triggered investigations by the U.S. road safety agency.Dealers will install a relay in the main electrical junction box to stop power from going to the brake computer when the engine is off. The recall is expected to start April 10.Earlier this month, Hyundai recalled nearly 430,000 small cars due to the same problem. That recall covered certain 2006 through 2011 Elantra and 2007 through 2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. Both companies said the rate of fires is low, but Hyundai is not recommending that the cars be parked outside.Hyundai said in documents that it has three reports of fires and no related injuries. Last April, NHTSA opened two new investigations into fires involving Hyundai and Kia vehicles after getting complaints of more than 3,100 fires and 103 injuries.The agency granted a petition seeking the investigations by the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, a consumer advocacy group.The investigations, one for Hyundai and the other for Kia, cover noncrash fires in almost 3 million vehicles from the affiliated automakers. The probes cover the 2011 through 2014 Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe, the 2011 through 2014 Kia Optima and Sorento, and the 2010 through 2015 Kia Soul. The complaints came from consumers and from data provided by both automakers.NHTSA had previously said it would incorporate the noncrash fires into a 2017 investigation that examined recalls of Hyundai and Kia vehicles for engine failures. It opened the new probes “based on the agency’s analysis of information received from multiple manufacturers, consumer complaints and other sources.”Engine failure and fire problems with Hyundais and Kias have affected more than 6 million vehicles since 2015, according to NHTSA documents.
