SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fernanda Whitworth watched her husband Ralph battle cancer for years."He couldn't swallow, he couldn't talk or basically eat. So he lost 45 pounds, it's literally barbaric."Ralph Whitworth was diagnosed with HPV-related tongue cancer in 2013. It eventually claimed his life in 2016.Before Ralph died, the Whitworths began a quest to find a cure. It's a mission Fernanda has carried on."I feel like we are so close; we're on the tipping point of finding a cure," she explained. The nonprofit they founded in San Diego, The Immunotherapy Foundation, is dedicated to funding the most promising research on HPV-driven cancers."This is a huge problem. Not only does HPV account for six different cancer types, almost 100 percent of cervical cancers and in men, now those instances are rising for head and neck cancer, " said Dr. Ezra Cohn, who is part of the foundation's medical team. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that about 14 million people get a new HPV infection every year in the U.S. Nearly all men and women who have ever had sex get at least one type of genital HPV at some time in their lives. The Immunotherapy Foundation has focused its efforts on three categories:  1272

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- District Attorney Summer Stephan spoke about her new efforts to train officers and weed out “bad actors.”The push includes calls for a new independent Commission on Police Practices, which would replace the current Community Review Board on Police Practices. “Our communities need us to grieve with them, but they also need us as leaders to step up,” Stephan said. “Officers that are involved in abuse like what we saw with Mr. George Floyd have a history. They do not belong in a field where you supposed to serve and protect and you have the power between life and death.”She said part of the effort to train officers in de-escalating situations includes a new class that focuses on interactions with the public. “This is about interacting with someone that may have mental health issues, may appear not compliant, and how do you talk to them. How do you de-escalate? How do you show respect and communication?” she said.The goal is to train all 5,000 officers in the local departments.The independent Commission on Police Practices would have independent council and subpoena power. It still needs to qualify for the November ballot. Mayor Faulconer pledged his support for the ballot measure Monday. Stephan said she also supports it.“I support it because it is a balanced approach for oversight and transparency,” Stephan said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Fans of Hello Kitty can catch the character's popular, pink cafe rolling through the North County and South Bay in the next month for the first time. The Hello Kitty Cafe Truck will be rolling through Carlsbad on Jan. 12 at The Shoppes at Carlsbad from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fans can catch the colorful cat near Regal Cinemas and Luna Grill.On Feb. 2, the truck is also scheduled to bring its delicious treats and trinkets to Chula Vista at the Otay Ranch Town Center.RELATED: San Diego Restaurant Week 2019: Over 180 restaurants taking partFans of the truck can grab a bite of tasty goodies, including a giant Hello Kitty cookie, macaroon set, and lunchbox with confetti popcorn. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hundreds of miles from her hometown of Paradise, Ashley Ketcham watches in horror as the Camp Fire ravages her beloved community.She now lives in Escondido and first heard about the fire from her mother.“I kind of blew it off because we’ve had fires my whole life, and then she wrote me back again and said the CMA Church burned down," Ketcham remembers.RELATED: Camp Fire: At least 9 dead as fire incinerates N. California townAt first, she felt numb.“I woke up this morning and, um, a friend of mine said 'Is it ok to hate God right now?' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Heartwrentching video of a humpback whale tangled in fishing net off of San Diego's coast prompted wildlife experts to react quickly.But the whale's condition is unknown after rescue crews were unable to help the animal.The video was captured Friday by Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego. What appeared to be another spectacular whale sighting turned into heartbreak."We got really excited because we saw these giant splashes," Biagini told 10News' Amanda Brandeis. "From that elation to kind of, pure heartbreak."RELATED: The world's smallest whale on the brink of extinction in the Sea of CortezNOAA and SeaWorld crews were notified of the whale. But SeaWorld said the whale was swimming too fast for them to continue rescue efforts."15,000 pound animal jumping out of the water next to a small boat that they're trying to use to rescue it is extremely dangerous, " said Biagini.Now the hope is agencies further north are able to find the whale to make sure it is freed from the netting.The face of the 30-foot whale appeared to be tangled in green fishing net. The netting was a drift gill net, which hangs vertically in the water and could measure up to a mile long.RELATED: Boaters warned to watch out for newborn gray whales during late migration"They are notorious for being dolphin, whale, and sea lion killers," Biagini said.Biagini said at one point, another humpback whale arrived and swam by the tangled whale."To see something that graceful, that gentle, that harmless go through something like this that's 100 percent caused by us, there's no debate on it. It's maddening," says Biagini. "For me. that's when I really started to get emotional because these are very sentient animals that do feel a wide range of emotions."This season, boaters are already being warned to watch out for newborn gray whales making their way from Alaska to Baja, Mexico. Biagini says some adult gray whales may give birth during the trek south because of the late migration. 2028
