(KGTV) -- Proposition 22 was approved by California voters on Tuesday, allowing app-based and delivery drivers to be classified as independent contractors.Under Prop. 22, workers would be guaranteed an hourly wage and sick leave.The proposition also states that drivers who work more than 15 hours per week would qualify for a monthly health insurance stipend, new medical and disability benefits if injured on the job, and new rules pertaining to rest periods, sexual harassment, and criminal background checks.Supporters say Prop. 22 protects app-based drivers’ choice to be independent contractors. The proposition is also endorsed by a majority of drivers, community members, and small business groups.Those opposed to Prop. 22 say a “no” vote stops companies from writing their own exemption to California law. Opponents also say the proposition denies drivers rights and safety protections.Proposition 22 was launched and partially funded by Lyft and Uber. (KGTV) – The Drug Enforcement Administration in Los Angeles County announced a record-breaking seizure of narcotics on Wednesday.The DEA’s Los Angeles Division stated agents seized about 893 pounds of cocaine, 13 pounds of heroin, and 2,224 pounds of methamphetamine.The meth seizure is the largest domestic methamphetamine seizure in DEA history, officials said.DEA Acting Administrator Timothy Shea said, "This is enough dope to prove a dose of meth for every man, women and child in the United States and Mexico. Study after study shows that where there is meth addiction, there is also an uptick in violent crime, including robberies, assaults and murders."Operation Crystal Shield is a nationwide effort involving 70 to 80 investigators in nine cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix and Atlanta. Agents seized more than 4,800 pounds of meth nationwide and are still working on more arrests, according to the DEA.The Southern California seizure occurred on Oct. 2, 2020, officials said. (KGTV) - Sentencing will continue next week for the man convicted of killing his former business partner along with the man’s wife and two young sons. A San Bernardino County jury recommended the death penalty in June 2019 for Charles “Chase” Merritt. The recommendation came after Merritt was found guilty in the deaths of Joseph McStay, his wife Summer, and their two sons, Gianni and Joey Jr. A sentence was expected to be delivered Friday. The hearing will now resume on Tuesday.The family was last seen at a Fallbrook home in February 2010. Investigators had few leads in the case, at one point believing the McStays had crossed the border into Mexico voluntarily. Merritt alerted authorities to the disappearance and filed a missing persons report. During his trial, which started in January 2019, prosecutors said Merritt had been forging checks linked to the business he shared with Joseph McStay. During Friday's sentencing, Merritt tried to fire his attorney, Rajan Maline, after returning from the court's lunch break. The defense had spent the morning giving several motions about new cell phone evidence. The prosecution had yet to have the chance to argue against the motions before Merritt moved to fire Maline mid-trial. The judge denied Merritt's request and allowed the defense to continue arguments for a new trial because of the new evidence and alleged misconduct by the prosecution. 1795
