Democrats felt they had a chance to win control of the Senate following the 2020 Election. And while hope is quickly evaporating after losing a few key races, Dems may still have a path to controlling the upper chamber — through Georgia.That's because the Peach State is choosing not just one, but two new Senators in 2020. And because Georgia uses a runoff system to elect its Senators, some candidates will continue campaigning in the state for a few weeks.In Georgia, Senate candidates need to win 50% of the vote on election day in order to secure their seats. If neither candidate reaches the 50% threshold, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff election in early January.This year, first-term Republican Sen. David Perdue is up for re-election and faces a stiff challenge from Democrat Jon Ossoff, who won a primary election earlier this year. Prior to election day, polls showed a tight race between the two candidates.As of Thursday morning, Perdue currently has just barely 50% of the vote — but the margin is razor-thin and shrinking. As election officials continue to count mail-in ballots, which tend to skew blue, Democrats hope votes for Ossoff and Libertarian candidate Shane Hazel drop Perdue's vote count under the 50% margin to force a runoff.In addition, Georgians this year were also tasked with selecting a replacement for third-term Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, who retired in 2019 due to health problems. Though businesswoman Kelly Loeffler was tapped by Gov. Brian Kemp to replace Isakson, Kemp announced that a special election would be held in 2020 so voters could select who finished Isakson's term.Because the special election had no primary vote, it was always expected to end in a runoff. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, currently has the most votes (about 33%) among all candidates — but likely because Loeffler and Rep. Doug Collins waged an expensive inter-Republican fight for the right to compete in a runoff. Loeffler (26%) tallied more votes than Collins (20%), meaning she'll face Warnock in a runoff election early next year.As of Thursday morning, both the Republican and Democrat caucus hold 48 Senate seats, with four races still to be called by the Associated Press. DEL MAR (KGTV) — A historic summer season at the Del Mar racetrack is wrapping up Monday, the first season without fans in the stands in the track’s history.But even with all the changes forced by the pandemic, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club says summer 2020 was a success.With no fans in attendance, the Thoroughbred Club says it missed out on about million in concessions and other on-track revenue this season. However, that was offset by lower staffing costs and an uptick in gambling revenue, according to Craig Dado, the club’s chief marketing officer.“We’re really happy with the numbers we’re getting and we will be able to eek out a small profit this year,” Dado said.Gambling revenues jumped about 7 percent thanks to off-track activity, Dado said, which is where the vast majority of bets are typically placed anyway. Anyone can bet on a Del Mar race using an app.“Basketball was delayed. Baseball was delayed, so a lot of people turned to horse racing, and we’re happy they did,” he said.The season had its hurdles. In July, the track canceled a weekend of racing after 15 jockeys and seven other workers tested positive for COVID-19.Last weekend, a horse was hurt during racing and had to be put down, the first death during racing at Del Mar since 2018.“To only have one in two racing seasons is a phenomenal number and we will definitely be the safest track in North America, as we have been the last two years,” Dado said.Dado attributed the track’s safety record to protocols adopted three years ago.But there are still questions about the kinds of pandemic protocols that will be in place when the November season begins.“At this point, we have no idea what’s going to happen in November,” he said. “Things are starting to open up in San Diego County. We have to be mindful of the conversations we have with the other adults in our house."As parents, we have to be really aware of how we’re showing up every day in front of our kids to make sure we’re doing the things we need to be doing to help promote our kids’ health and well-being," said Dr. Hawks.She says this is a great opportunity to teach our kids several lessons. DEL MAR (CNS) - The California Coastal Commission unanimously approved several modifications to the Del Mar Bluffs stabilization project Friday, which will allow the San Diego Association of Governments to continue with work in stage four of the project.Modifications include an increase of three feet to the height of an existing retaining wall at the base of the bluffs near 12th Street, installation of four additional support columns along the upper bluffs near 12th Street and the repair of a small upper bluff failure near Seventh Street.The newly approved work will further stabilize the Del Mar bluffs, which is a critical segment of the 351-mile Los Angeles-San Luis Obispo-San Diego rail corridor. SANDAG and North County Transit District are working together on the project. Phase 4 stabilization efforts cost approximately .8 million and are funded through a combination of federal, state and local sources."The California Coastal Commission's decision today will help ensure continued reliability for our county's major rail corridor, which is crucial for goods movement, commuters and supporting our nation's military," said SANDAG Chair and Poway Mayor Steve Vaus. "It is critical that we continue to reinforce this section of track in Del Mar, while exploring alternatives to move the tracks completely off the bluffs."Phase four work is currently underway to install support columns to stabilize localized areas and seawalls, construct a drainage channel on top of the bluffs and repair concrete channels and storm drain outfalls.
