SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside an MCAS Miramar courtroom Thursday, the military held a preliminary hearing for a Navy corpsman who's charged in connection with the death of a fellow Navy corpsman, HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon. A corpsman is a type of medic.ABC 10News' cameras were not allowed inside, where accused corpsman HM1 Ryan Dini appeared in his military fatigues alongside his private counsel."A cover-up is what I felt [happened] from the get-go," Jose De Leon told ABC 10News just after the hearing. He has suspected a possible cover-up since his 30-year-old son died on the Twentynine Palms military base last year.At Thursday's hearing, the prosecution argued that HM1 Dini should face additional charges related to negligence. He's already charged in part with dereliction of duty resulting in death and drunk and disorderly conduct. HM1 Dini has 19 years of service with the military.The prosecution stated that HM1 Dini and a handful of others service members including Michael were at a house party on-base where alcohol was flowing, and guns were being dry-fired the night of the death.HM1 Dini's defense denied any wrongdoing."[HM1 Dini] being the most senior individual at this going-away party failed to protect not just Michael but everyone there because they were in danger when these firearms came out," said Jose De Leon. He told us in September, "We know that the firearm was dry-fired at Michael. The firearm was put away and it came out again and according to some statements they were horsing around, and the firearm came out again and that's when Michael was killed."He said that the shooting was first called in as a suicide but ABC 10News then learned from a source with close military ties that the death was being investigated as a homicide.A prosecutor named three other service members in the hearing. Their involvement remains unknown.The prosecution told ABC 10News that in about three weeks a judge will determine whether HM1 Dini's charges will be sustained and whether he'll face additional charges.Naval Criminal Investigative Service wrote to ABC 10News on Thursday that the investigation is still open. 2149

I’m excited that I’m alive to see this happen,” said Ellen Nash, the chair of the San Diego chapter of the Black American Political Association of California.“All along that was the right choice,” Nash told ABC 10News. “I’m honored that she’s there to represent Black women and the Black vote. For Joe Biden to honor us by selecting her as his VP is the greatest historic moment.”Many Black voters wrote to Biden, urging him to choose Harris.Nash said having Harris as the first Black and Asian American woman to appear on a major party’s presidential ticket gives women of color a voice.“It was just a moment of relaxation and celebration,” said Nash. “She is prepared, skilled, and credentialed.”But does this choice possible boost Biden’s chances of winning this election? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lifeguards say two people were rescued from a trail in the Blacks Beach area on Sunday in separate incidents.The first involved a woman who injured her ankle, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue. The woman was about half-way down before being injured. Lifeguards put her on a stretcher and used ropes to lower her down to the beach. She was taken by lifeguards to meet paramedics.The second occurred on the same trail, involving a woman suffering from heat exhaustion. She was unable to make it down the rest of the trail, requiring lifeguards to hoist her to the beach below to get her to paramedics.Lifeguards said with Labor Day weekend approaching and a heatwave expected next weekend, they are reminding visitors to local trails to know their limits, wear proper footwear for uneven beach terrain, and make sure they have plenty of water.Beach lifeguards say they don't expect to see crowds slow down anytime soon. 945

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Just in time for the Fourth of July, the Mission Beach Plunge pool is reopening to the public. The iconic pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014.Thanks to a partnership between the City of San Diego, Fit Athletic, and Pacifica Enterprises, the renovated pool is almost unrecognizable. "This is absolutely special, incredible," said Dr. McQuary, a longtime San Diego resident who is active in the community."What I remember about the Plunge was the issues and concerns about how we can swim and still be safe. When things would fall from the sky, it wasn't rain; it was the plaster from the ceiling!"The Plunge at Fit features floor to wall glass ceilings and a retractable roof. It also incorporates some of the building's original features, replicating the tiling and original archways.Part of the new Fit Athletic Mission Beach gym, the facility also offers beach views throughout. "It's been part of the San Diego landscape and part of the lifestyle for all those years," said Terry Curren, who moved to Mission Beach in 1937.The Plunge will officially open to the public on July 4; day passes start at a day, and there are also membership options available. 1511
